Book excerpt: COVID-19 changes and restrictions have necessitated a change in the way schools, mental health providers, medical providers, and other educational and therapy services provide for children with autism. This study explores, in-depth, the experience of parents of children with ASD as they have navigated the COVID-19 required changes to professional treatment and services for children with ASD and their families. Research suggests that raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be an overwhelming experience for parents and families, and greater family burden is positively associated with the number of unmet professional help service needs. As services were moved to online or discontinued during COVID-19 in Washington state, participants experienced a reduced access to care and describe in this study how it impacted their families. Specifically, parents and children preferred professional supports that were in person and when treating the child, participants appreciated a whole family approach where they were included in the therapy process but were not compelled to provide the therapy. Parents added that the further isolation that lockdowns, move to online therapies, online schooling, and shutting down of parks, and other venues had an outsized negative impact on them and their family. The systemic family impact of the COVID-19 mitigation efforts by providers of professional supports were significant to parents and varied across delivery methods, age of the children, parental transgenerational challenges, and other significant factors.

Parents of children with ASD learn to cope with challenges. It was hypothesized that many parents in the lower mainland of British Columbia are self-educating instead of learning from healthcare professionals. It was also hypothesized that parents are unaware of the resources available to them after receiving a diagnosis, and are therefore seeking help for their child and assembling services in much the same way they self-educated themselves. Eight families were interviewed about their experiences post-diagnosis. It was observed that families varied greatly in emotional response and were provided with information from a physician. However, few actually used the information provided to achieve a service assembly. This qualitative research revealed that families experience relational strain and parents desired a resources to guide, support, and educate them throughout their autism journey.

Despite reliable screening practices and early detection initiatives, black children are being diagnosed with autism at a later age compared to white children and other races. This qualitative study employs a phenomenological approach to capture the unique perspectives of parents and caregivers, shedding light on barriers to quality care and identifying evidence-based interventions to address the diagnostic disparity. Convenience sampling was used to recruit five participants, all female caregivers, residing along the eastern coast of the United States. Data was collected through phone interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Three main themes emerged from the data: "developmental expectations," "socioeconomic barriers," and "cultural stigmas." The study highlights the importance of parental awareness, the impact of socioeconomic status on equitable access to care, and the need to address cultural stigmas to improve early diagnosis and intervention for black children with ASD. However, the study's small sample size and reliance on self-reported data are limitations that should be considered when interpreting the findings.

Book excerpt: While the process of obtaining an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis for a child can involve several challenges for parents (Keenan, Dillenburger, Doherty, Byrne, & Gallagher, 2010), this process may be even more complex for immigrant parents (Begeer, El Bouk, Boussaid, Terwogt, & Koot, 2009; Jegatheesan, Fowler, & Miller, 2010). This qualitative study utilized an eco-cultural framework (Super & Harkness, 1986) to explore the experiences of eight immigrant families during their process of obtaining a diagnosis and services for their children with ASD. Each family participated in two in-depth, semi-structured interviews (45-90 minutes) with many open-ended questions to permit parents to recount their story of obtaining the ASD diagnosis and services for their children. Using open and axial coding, the data were analyzed inductively and deductively to reveal various themes related to the diagnosis, treatment services, relationships with professionals, and future expectations for their children. Given that Montreal is such a highly multicultural metropolis (Statistics Canada, 2007), it is important that professionals recognize how parental beliefs about the ASD diagnosis could shape their treatment decisions and adherence (Dale, Jahoda, & Knott, 2006). Data from this qualitative study support the importance of adopting a culturally responsive practice when working with families by considering families’ perceptions and the core meaning of their experiences (Harry, 2002). That is, a culturally responsive practice helps to ensure that parents are given a voice, permits professionals to understand how parent perceptions may be formed, and allows for professionals to revisit any relevant problems that may interfere with parents’ negotiation of services.

Book excerpt: Section A presents a critical review of current literature regarding the parental experiences of receiving, and making sense of, a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for their child where there is no learning disability present. It begins with an overview of the current debates in the diagnosis of ASD and considers how parents make sense of a diagnosis. The review then evaluates papers pertaining to parents' experiences of receiving a diagnosis for their child, their experience of living with ASD and the efficacy of post-diagnostic psychoeducation interventions. A consideration of the clinical and research implications of these findings concludes the section. Section B provides the findings of a narrative study examining the development of parental narratives following the diagnosis of their child with high functioning autism or Asperger's syndrome. Seven parents who were participating in a post-diagnostic psychoeducation group were interviewed across two time points. The findings highlight the parents' development of a new framework enabling the creation of an alternative personal and family narrative. The implications this has on parental well-being are discussed and recommendations are made for future research to build on these initial findings. Section C provides a critical appraisal and reflective account of the study presented in section B. This includes consideration of development of research skills, limitations of the study, clinical implications, and future research ideas.

Book excerpt: As the number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in South Africa increases annually, so too does the number of parents raising these children. The issue addressed by this study is the gap in current literature on the hope experiences in parents of a child with ASD in South Africa. While numerous research studies have dealt with the experiences of parents raising a child with ASD, majority - specifically in Africa - focus on the negative experiences. Very few studies have been conducted on hope experiences and ASD, and these are almost exclusively within an international context. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative case study was to explore and describe the hope experiences of parents raising a child with ASD. The conveniently selected participants (two females) each had a child who was attending The Autism School1, an intervention centre in Johannesburg. An interpretive phenomenological approach allowed the researcher to understand the unique, subjective meaning that parents assign to their own experiences. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview and a participant research journal for each participant. Parents raising a child with ASD experience a variety of hope related experiences that either enhance or diminish hope. Health professionals either reduced hope by giving information at the time of the diagnosis that was not specific enough, or enhanced hope by interacting with the parents in a way that enhanced learning. Hope was also enhanced when parents felt connected with sources of support. Generating options to address the challenges experienced enhanced survival related hope whereas feelings of powerlessness over certain situations resulted in reduced hope. Being able to regulate emotions was important in enhancing survival related hope. Spiritual related hope was enhanced when in conjunction with the practical interventions the parents pursued, they were able to rely on a higher power to bring about change in the child through hoping for a miracle. These findings may be useful for health professionals working with these parents as it may provide a new way of understanding and supporting them.
