Book excerpt: The wind tunnel wall interference in transonic speed is formulated as perturbation to the basic flow around the airfoil in free air. The perturbation equation is derived from the transonic small disturbance equation and is linear but with variable coefficients containing the non-linear solution of the basic flow. The equation is solved numerically by a direct matrix method using the classical boundary condition for a porous wall. The solution in terms of lift versus angle of attack agrees well with that calculated directly from the small disturbance equation. (Author).

Book excerpt: A description and analysis is presented of the more important developments during the past decade in the understanding of the wall interference problem associated with two-dimensional wind tunnel testing at subsonic and transonic speeds. Discussed are: wall boundary conditions; asymptotic analysis of wall interference; classical and extended wall interference theories; wall interference corrections from boundary measurements; integral equation formulation of subcritical wall interference; and effects of side wall boundary layer on two-dimensional tests. Unsteady wall interference at subsonic flow conditions is reviewed. Recent advances in the adaptive wall technique, which actively reduces or eliminates wall interference, are also described. Book excerpt: This report was compiled by an international team of wind tunnel wall correction experts. It presents the present state of the art in wind tunnel wall corrections with a special emphasis given to the description of modern wall correction methods based on Computational Fluid Dynamics. This AGARDograph was planned by the AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel to be a modern sequel of the successful AGARDograph 109 "Subsonic Wind Tunnel Wall Corrections", which was published in 1966. AGARDogaph 109 is still valid and continues to be used to provide wall corrections in many wind tunnels. Nevertheless, in the thirty two years since the publication of AGARDograph 109, much work has been done on the subject, and the influence of the new tool of numerical fluid dynamics was so strong, that a sequel to AGARDograph 109 was considered to be necessary.

This book was released on 1976 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wind tunnel boundary interference at transonic speeds on a thin airfoil in a two-dimensional perforated-wall wind tunnel was determined. The interference was found by applying an integral equation method to the nonlinear transonic small disturbance equation including embedded supersonic regions with shock waves. The kernels of the ensuing integral equation were replaced by series approximations, and the integrals were evaluated in closed form. The iterative technique used to calculate the interference from the integral equation method is shown to converge rapidly, and the computing time for the integral equation method is typically an order of magnitude less than present numerical methods. As a special case, the integral equation method for a thin airfoil in free air was also examined. It was found that the introduction of a novel influence function yields, for the first time, a self-contained integral equation for a lifting airfoil. In addition, a systematic study of the classical assumption used to simplify the integral equation shows that the integral method can provide solutions in good agreement with results from the numerical methods.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of transonic wind tunnel tests on two-dimensional aerofoils are analysed with respect to the effects of wind tunnel wall interference. The tests were conducted on two geometrically similar models of each of two aerofoil sections - the NACA 0012 and the BGK-1 sections-and covered a range of Mach numbers from 0.5 to 0.82 with model chord to tunnel height ratios of 0.125 and 0.25. Results from measurements on all models in both solid- and slotted-wall test sections are corrected for wind tunnel wall interference effects by the application of classical linearized theory. For the solid wall results, these corrections appear to produce data which are very close to being free of the effects of interference. In the case of slotted walls however, linear theory is found to significantly underestimate the magnitude of blockage interference. The introduction of an empirical blockage correction, when combined with the linear theory representation of lift-interference, enables the cross-flow characteristics of the slotted walls to be determined, and leads to a successful correction scheme for the slotted wall results. Extensive comparisons with data from other sources, both experimental and theoretical, provide further verification that the corrected results are indeed closely interference free. (Author).
