Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you taken your business from good to great, only to find that “great” still isn’t cutting it? Are you making all the right moves in your career and still not receiving the recognition you have earned? Why do companies like Apple get all the attention, when you have difficulty getting anyone to focus on your efforts? In our homogenized world, companies in every sector—from big-box retail to financial services; from fast food to entrepreneurs—appear more and more alike, as do the tweets and LinkedIn pages of professionals across the country. But if people see you or your company as nothing more than a carbon copy of the competition, how can you expect to attract attention? Scott McKain’s original approach to this problem, first captured in his book Collapse of Distinction, was conceived and written in the direct aftermath of the 2008 financial meltdown. His forceful case for the importance of distinction—finding success by setting yourself apart from the crowd—resonated with thousands of readers. To reflect the changing reality since that book’s publication—and to incorporate new research and up-to-date examples—McKain, an internationally recognized expert on business distinction, has retitled and revised it as Create Distinction. Within these updated pages (including one entirely new chapter) you’ll find a potent cure for similarity and uniformity—the primary killers of businesses and careers. In engaging, story-filled prose, McKain lays out the cornerstones of distinction and equips you with the specific tools and knowledge you need to stand out. Whether you’re in the “C-suite” of a multinational company or just vying for your next promotion, you’ll learn how to rise above the fray and make your work unmistakable. With this practical advice, you’ll feel confident stepping up from the competition—and toward success.

Book excerpt: There is a void that yearns to be filled. Numerous books and articles concerning luxury motor cars manufactured prior to the Second World War have been written. These publications describe their beauty of design, the history of various marques and include a limited amount of mechanical specifications. With few exceptions, there is no in-depth examination of the car's performance and what can be expected of such a vehicle on today's roads. Road Testing Cars of Distinction intends to fill that void. Beginning in the late 1940s, the modern road test began to develop in America. A typical report includes a vehicle's acceleration time, top speed, handling characteristics, braking ability, driving comfort, etc. In short, the modern road test provides in depth information. Prior to World War II, published road tests generally contained much less useful data than today's enthusiast has come to expect. Road Testing Cars of Distinction remedies this lack of relevant information. Each chapter offers a comprehensive road test of a Classic car in words, charts and pictures from information gathered and exhaustively researched during the last ten years. Road Testing Cars of Distinction places the reader in the driver's seat and takes him on an imaginary ride in a luxury vintage motor car. From a 265 horsepower Duesenberg Model J Sport Phaeton to a 32 horsepower Franklin Sport Runabout, the reader is vicariously transported behind the wheel to savor the excitement of driving an automobile usually reserved for the elite of society. The common thread running through each chapter is that all the cars tested were high-end cars. Not high-end luxury cars as we know them today, but automobiles that were so expensive that annual sales were frequently in the double digits or less. It is a book that both the knowledgeable vintage car aficionado and teenager about to receive his driver's license will relish reading and retaining for reference because he may currently own or someday acquire one of these mobile masterpieces of technological art. Road Testing Cars of Distinction is the culmination of ten years of road testing approximately one hundred magnificent Classic motor cars across the United States The book contains some of the most sought after as well as some of the most obscure luxury Classic cars. I have attempted to cover as many different makes as possible in the limited space available and yet also devote time to the more popular old cars without retracing paths that are well trodden by other authors. In addition to the twenty-eight chapters is a table setting forth performance figures for the twenty-eight motor cars road tested. This table provides a shorthand reference of each vehicle's performance potential. Road Testing Cars of Distinction places the keys in your hands, plants you in the driver's seat and provides you with an imaginary test drive of some very rare and enthralling motor cars.

Book excerpt: Paperback: As the car market proliferated with many styles, makes and functions, one particular trend elevated the automobile above the mere transportation-only, family-hauling and / or workhorse appliance. It was the "Personal Luxury Car." Affordable cars could be crafted and massaged into status symbols for the masses while luxury cars could be similarly crafted into a rarer form of distinction. This new found prominence supposedly mitigated the chores of daily driving and errand running through environmental isolation; all the while projecting the owner's individuality and ego to the world. From the author of "Those 80s Cars," this book contains 600+ photographs with marketing quotes that led several generations of selling a lifestyle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Open Access edition of this book will be available on the Liverpool University Press website and the OAPEN library. Since its invention, the automobile has been systematically ‘consumed’, to become part of the fabric of twentieth- and twenty-first-century society, its impact and perception making the car an accurate gauge of changing cultural norms and values. As it grew in popularity, the automobile conditioned the very texture of modern life, and the particularly car-centred society of contemporary France is an especially apt locus for examination. The ubiquity of the automobile across all social strata provides us with a defined lens through which to examine the evolution of French society in the modern and post-modern eras. Taking the Second World War as a pivotal moment in recent French history, this book demonstrates how the automobile was both consumed and fetishized in distinct ways before and after this conflict. The ways in which society evolved from the pre- to the post-war period allow us to view French culture through the prism of the automobile as it embodied technological and social progress in twentieth-century France. The present volume seeks to explore and interrogate the processes of representation and mediation inherent in the evolving patterns of automobile consumption, and their subsequent impacts on local and national identity, framed by a detailed case study centred on France from the late-nineteenth century to the oil crisis of the early 1970s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of papers presented in this special issue arose out of two events. The first was the symposium "Escaping Satiation - Increasing Product Variety, Preference Change and the Demand Side of Economic Growth" which was held at the Max Planck Institute in Jena, Germany, in December 1997. The Fritz Thyssen Foundation provided financial support for this seminal symposium which is gratefully acknowledged. Wilhelm Ruprecht was of great help in preparing the symposium and I would like to express my gratitude to hirn on this occasion. Many stimulating exchanges with hirn over the past few years while he was a research associate at the Institute working on long term changes in consumption convinced me of the relevance and importance of this problem for understanding modem economic growth. I also owe thanks to many people who encouraged me to go ahead with the symposium, among them Stanley Metcalfe, Carl Christian von Weizsäcker, and also Ehud Zuscovitch, who died so unexpectedly last year.
