Book excerpt: Human Lymphokines: The Biological Immune Response Modifiers is a collection of papers presented at the Third International Symposium on Human Lymphokines held on October 15-17, 1981 at the Wadley Institutes of Molecular Medicine in Dallas, Texas. Contributors explore the role of human lymphokines in immune responses and their applications in immunotherapy. The focus is on lymphokines that have either entered clinical trials or are nearing clinical evaluation. Some of the activities of possible immediate significance, such as Glia cell stimulating factor and polyclonal B-cell activator, are also described. This volume is organized into six sections encompassing 56 chapters and begins with an overview of assay systems, touching on topics such as the activation of macrophages by interferon to produce plasminogen and macrophage activation by lymphokine factors. The next sections turn to the production, purification, and biological and chemical characterization of lymphokines. The discussion then shifts to the mechanisms of action of lymphokines in vitro and the use of animal models in lymphokine investigations, including lymphokine fractions in a mouse tumor model and enhancement of natural killing activity by different types of interferon. A great deal of emphasis is placed on macrophage migration inhibitory factor, lymphotoxins, gamma interferon, and interleukins. The book concludes with chapters devoted to the immunoregulatory effects of lymphokines and clinical studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology of the Lymphokines discusses the scope and diversity of lymphokine research. This book focuses on the studies on lymphokines, such as those involving cellular source, chemical nature, purification strategies, and bioassay limitations. The mechanism of lymphokine action, lymphokines in vivo, and value of lymphokine quantitations are also covered. This text describes the repertoire of lymphokines produced by various lymphoblastoid cell lines and its significance for coping with the problem of large scale lymphokine production. The anti-viral and general immunoregulatory properties of interferons and rationale developed for integrating interferons with the family of lymphokines are likewise deliberated. This publication is a good source for students and researchers conducting work on lymphokines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive and definitive coverage of current understanding of the causes, diagnosis and treatment of the inflammatory disease pancreatitis. Pancreatitis occurs in both acute and chronic forms along with the more recently identified autoimmune pancreatitis. Mechanisms of the disease are studied in animal models with the goal of developing rational therapy. The book has been overseen and published by the American Pancreatic Association with John A. Williams as Editor-in-Chief. It includes 65 chapters written and edited by a worldwide group of authorities; completed chapters are also presented in open access on the Pancreapedia (www.pancreapedia.org). Individual chapters are relatively brief, dividing coverage into smaller units while maintaining depth. The book contains full-color and summary diagrams for enhanced readability, and a subject index enhances findability of information on specific topics. Pancreatitis is divided into four sections: - Experimental Pancreatitis - Section Editors: Stephen J. Pandol and Ashok K. Saluja - Acute Pancreatitis - Section Editors: Markus M. Lerch and Marc G. Besselink - Chronic Pancreatitis - Section Editors: Pramod K. Garg and Julia Mayerle - Autoimmune Pancreatitis - Section Editors: Suresh T. Chari and Phil A. Hart The book is aimed at pancreas researchers and clinical practitioners, but the clear and readable text will also appeal to students and individuals interested in the exocrine pancreas and its diseases.

Book excerpt: Echinostomes are ubiquitous intestinal flatworm parasites of vertebrates, and are important in human and veterinary medicine and wildlife diseases. They are also very good models for biology experiments because they are easy and inexpensive to maintain in adult and larval worm stages, and of course are unlikely to draw the attention of animal rights advocates. They have been used for decades for research, but practical information on such use has not been compiled in a single reference before. They have been used in experiments in excystation and in-vitro cultivation, larval and adult parasite-host relationships, reproductive behavior, various aspects of host-parasite recognition and interactions, and other concerns at all levels from molecular to organismic. The topics include biology; systematics; maintenance, cultivation, and excystation; behavioral biology; reproductive physiology and behavior; physiology and biochemistry; and immunobiology and immunodiagnosis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The secretions of the exocrine pancreas provide for digestion of a meal into components that are then available for processing and absorption by the intestinal epithelium. Without the exocrine pancreas, malabsorption and malnutrition result. This chapter describes the cellular participants responsible for the secretion of digestive enzymes and fluid that in combination provide a pancreatic secretion that accomplishes the digestive functions of the gland. Key cellular participants, the acinar cell and the duct cell, are responsible for digestive enzyme and fluid secretion, respectively, of the exocrine pancreas. This chapter describes the neurohumoral pathways that mediate the pancreatic response to a meal as well as details of the cellular mechanisms that are necessary for the organ responses, including protein synthesis and transport and ion transports, and the regulation of these responses by intracellular signaling systems. Examples of pancreatic diseases resulting from dysfunction in cellular mechanisms provide emphasis of the importance of the normal physiologic mechanisms.
