Book excerpt: Using the SIN and 2DE computer codes, we have conducted a numerical study of the shock initiation response of both bare and covered composition-B charges to projectile impact. In the bare charge case we observed two modes of shock initiation. Independence of the explosive response with respect to projectile aspect ratio was verified and critical conditions were determined as a function of projectile diameter with unit aspect ratio. The critical velocity was observed to have a linear dependence on the reciprocal of the square root of the diameter with values a little below experimental data. Additional linear relations to completely describe buildup to detonation were generated from the results. We found that development of detonation is similar in the case of covered charges. When the critical velocity was corrected for cover plate thickness, good agreement between the results for bare and covered charges was observed.

Book excerpt: HELP code is employed to study the impact to a projectile on heavily confined, inert, solid explosive Comp B3. Temperature rise due to shock compression and plastic deformation, in both the explosive and the metal confinement, is estimated. In addition, the effect of variation of the imapct parameters, such as projectile diameter, projectile velocity and confinement thickness on the rise in temperature is studied. It is concluded that usually shock is a dominant mechanism responsible for significant heating of the explosive. However, in certain situations, plastic deformations may lead to violent reaction in confined explosives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock initiation thresholds of bare and covered PBX-9404 and an HMX/TATB explosive called RX-26-AF were measured. The shocks were produced by the impact of flat-nosed and round-nosed steel projectiles in the velocity range of 0.5 to 2.2 km/s. Three types of coverings were used, 2 or 6 mm of tantalum, and a composite of aluminum and plastic. An Eulerian code containing material-strength and explosive-initiation models was used to evaluate our ability to calculate the shock initiation thresholds. These code calculations agreed well with the flat-nosed experimental data, but not so well with the round-nosed data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock initiation experiments on the explosives Composition B and C-4 were performed to obtain in-situ pressure gauge data for the purpose of determining the Ignition and Growth reactive flow model with proper modeling parameters. A 101 mm diameter propellant driven gas gun was utilized to initiate the explosive charges containing manganin piezoresistive pressure gauge packages embedded in the explosive sample. Experimental data provided new information on the shock velocity versus particle velocity relationship for each of the investigated materials in their respective pressure range. The run-distance-to-detonation points on the Pop-plot for these experiments showed agreement with previously published data, and Ignition and Growth modeling calculations resulted in a good fit to the experimental data. These experimental data were used to determine Ignition and Growth reactive flow model parameters for these explosives. Identical ignition and growth reaction rate parameters were used for C-4 and Composition B, and the Composition B model also included a third reaction rate to simulate the completion of reaction by the TNT component. The Composition B model was then tested on existing short pulse duration, gap test, and projectile impact shock initiation with good results. This Composition B model can be applied to shock initiation scenarios that have not or cannot be tested experimentally with a high level of confidence in its predictions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents comprehensive experimental, numerical, and theoretical research on projectile impact analysis, such as the rigid projectile penetration/perforation of concrete and metallic targets, and shaped-charge-formed projectile and jet penetrations. Concrete and metal materials are widely used in protective structures in both civil engineering and armored vehicles, such as military fortifications, underground shelters, infantry fighting vehicles, and tanks, which are designed to withstand intentional or accidental impact loadings caused by projectiles and fragments, and the responses of these targets under projectile impact have been a topic of discussion for several decades. Written for researchers and engineers working in the fields of protective structures and high-speed penetration mechanics, the book is also a valuable reference for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students majoring in defense engineering, terminal ballistics and other related fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in the field of shock physics and ballistic impact has always been intimately tied to progress in development of facilities for accelerating projectiles to high velocity and instrumentation for recording impact phenomena. The chapters of this book, written by leading US and European experts, cover a broad range of topics and address researchers concerned with questions of material behaviour under impulsive loading and the equations of state of matter, as well as the design of suitable instrumentation such as gas guns and high-speed diagnostics. Applications include high-speed impact dynamics, the inner composition of planets, syntheses of new materials and materials processing. Among the more technologically oriented applications treated is the testing of the flight characteristics of aeroballistic models and the assessment of impacts in the aerospace industry.
