Book excerpt: In this thesis multi-phase flow models are used to study the flow behavior of liquid contaminants in aquifers and of gases that are injected below the groundwater table for remediation purposes. Considered problems are redistribution of a lens of light nonaqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) on a horizontal water table with emphasis on the effect of NAPL entrapment by water and its removal through a well with appropriate multi-phase seepage conditions at the well boundary. In addition, air injection into groundwater (air sparging) in a homogeneous soil and in a layered soil are modeled. Accurate but very time-consuming numerical simulations for the various problems are performed. For further analysis appropriate reductions are made. Assuming vertical equilibrium and vertical averaging of the flow equations reduce the geometrical dimensionality of the LNAPL lens problems and of the problem of air sparging in a layered soil. The air sparging problems are analyzed at steady state, which eliminates the time dependence. Sparging in a homogeneous soil admits further reduction by neglecting capillary forces in vertical direction. For all problems the resulting equations are of nonlinear diffusion type, that can be cast into the porous medium equation. For the various problems similarity solutions to the porous medium equation exist, that show good agreement with numerical results. These analytical solutions give the main features of the spreading velocity of an LNAPL lens and the amount of NAPL that becomes trapped, of the LNAPL removal rate and the extension of the remaining NAPL in case of extraction, and of the air sparging radius of influence in a homogeneous and in a layered soil.

Book excerpt: In order to preserve groundwater resources from contamination by volatile organic compounds and to clean up sites contaminated with the compounds, we should understand fate and transport of contaminants in the subsurface systems and physicochemical processes involving remediation technologies. To enhance our understanding, numerical studies were performed on the following topics: (i) multiphase flow and contaminant transport in subsurface environments; (ii) biological transformations of contaminants; (iii) in-situ air sparging (IAS); and, thermal-enhanced venting (TEV). Among VOCs, trichloroethylene (TCE) is one of the most-frequently-detected chemicals in the contaminated groundwater. TCE and its daughter products (cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (cDCE) and vinyl chloride (VC)) are chosen as target contaminants. Density-driven advection of gas phase is generated by the increase in gas density due to vaporization of high-molecular weight contaminants such as TCE in the unsaturated zone. The effect of the density-driven advection on fate and transport of TCE was investigated under several environmental conditions involving infiltration and permeability. Biological transformations of contaminants can generate byproducts, which may become new toxic contaminants in subsurface systems. Sequential biotransformations of TCE, cDCE, and VC are considered herein. Under different reaction rates for two bioreaction kinetics, temporal and spatial concentration profiles of the contaminants were examined to evaluate the effect of biotransformations on multispecies transport. IAS injects clean air into the subsurface below the groundwater table to remediate contaminated groundwater. The movement of gas and the groundwater as a multiphase flow in the saturated zone and the removal of TCE by IAS application were analyzed. Each fluid flow under IAS was examined in terms of saturation levels and fluid velocity profiles in a three-dimensional domain. Several scenarios for IAS systems were simulated to evaluate remedial performance of the systems. TEV was simulated to investigate its efficiency on the removal of a nonaqueous phase liquid in the unsaturated zone under different operational conditions. For numerical studies herein, the governing equations for multiphase flow, multispecies transport, and heat energy in porous media were developed and solved using Galerkin finite element method. A three-dimensional numerical model, called TechFlowMP model, has been developed.

Air sparging systems are easy to implement, and relatively simple to operate. In addition, it is a relatively low cost remediation technology that can be applied in conjunction with other remediation technologies. For these reasons, air sparging has become widely used. In this book the investigation of various "rule of thumb" design protocols for air sparging using a cross-flow two-compartment numerical model to improve the efficiency of air sparging. A numerical model was developed by the author and presented here was concurrently used with multiphase flow software. The recent developed model considers the contaminant concentrations in the two compartments: gas and dissolved phases. Mass balance has been applied for deriving a pair of linked partial differential equations. A numerical technique solution using the finite difference method has been used simultaneously in solving for the contaminant concentration in both gas and liquid phases. An analytical solution has been derived and verified with the numerical solution.
