Book Synopsis Perspectives on Arabic Linguistics by : Ellen Broselow
Download or read book Perspectives on Arabic Linguistics written by Ellen Broselow and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1992-02-27 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes papers on the study of Arabic dialects and their implications for general linguistics (Section I), as well of papers of a more general nature (Sections II and III). Because the Arabic dialects are similar in many ways, a study of their differences can help isolate precisely the range of permissible interlinguistic variation (i.e. the “parameters” of universal grammar). A number of papers in Section I focus on the contribution of dialect studies to a theory of crossdialectal and crosslinguistic variation; others focus on individual dialects, thus providing data and analyses that can further contribute to our understanding of this type of variation. The papers in Sections II and III of the volume are selected from the general session of the symposium and address sociolinguistic and historical aspects of Arabic, respectively.

It features a set of papers which continue a long tradition of seeking new explanations for familiar or previously undiscovered structural patterns. While the papers illustrate a range of approaches, from formalist to functionalist, each paper combines rigorous analysis of a set of Arabic data within the context of explicit models of some aspect of human language. The volume consists of three sections, the first section devoted to phonetics and phonology, the second to syntax, and the third to language acquisition and language contact.

This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides important contributions to Arabic linguistics and Linguistic research in general by presenting new empirical facts and innovative theoretical analyses. It consists of two major parts: the first contains four papers on phonology and morphology, most of which deal with phonology/morphology interface, while the second part includes five papers on syntax. The papers featured represent some of the current trends in Arabic Linguistics especially in the areas of Phonology and Syntax. Some of the articles are contributions to ongoing debates on the nature and properties of specific aspects of Arabic, such as: gemination and stress assignment in Phonology, and negation in Syntax. Other papers introduce new topics such as: analyzing intonational patterns in Arabic Phonology, investigating the source of the morpheme /-in/ in the less studied varieties of Central Asian Arabic in Morphology, and analyzing “sluicing” in Syntax.

Book Synopsis The Syllable in Optimality Theory by : Caroline Féry
Download or read book The Syllable in Optimality Theory written by Caroline Féry and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-27 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The syllable has always been a key concept in generative linguistics: the rules, representations, parameters, or constraints posited in diverse frameworks of theoretical phonology and morphology all make reference to this fundamental unit of prosodic structure. No less central to the field is Optimality Theory, an approach developed within (morpho-)phonology in the early 1990s. This 2003 book combines two themes of central importance to linguists and their mutual relevance in recent research. It provides an overview of the role of the syllable in OT and ways in which problems that relate to the analysis of syllable structure can be solved in OT. The contributions to the book not only show that the syllable sheds light on certain properties of OT itself, they also demonstrate that OT is capable of describing and adequately analyzing many issues that are problematic in other theories. The analyses are based on a wealth of languages.
Book Synopsis Positional Faithfulness by : Jill N. Beckman
Download or read book Positional Faithfulness written by Jill N. Beckman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999. This study developed from a dissertation in 1993, when the author undertook what she thought would be a simple Optimality Theory analysis of Shona vowel harmony. Having initially treated Shona height harmony as a case of featural alignment, akin to Kirchner's 1993 analysis of Turkish she realized that alignment constraints alone could not account for one central aspect of the Shona case: the priority of initial syllable features in determining the outcome of harmony. This volume of research outlines the authirs discoveries.
