Book Synopsis Trilingual Swiss Law Dictionary by : Thomas L. West III
Download or read book Trilingual Swiss Law Dictionary written by Thomas L. West III and published by Intermark Language Services. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first trilingual dictionary focused solely on Swiss legal terms, translating them from French into German and American English and from German into French and American English (including hundreds of terms for which TERMDAT.ch does not provide an English translation). It is fully up-to-date and includes the new terminology of Swiss civil procedure and criminal procedure that have been in effect since 2011. In addition to those two areas of law, the dictionary also covers civil law, criminal law, constitutional law, debt collection and bankruptcy, and corporate law. Particularly tricky terms are accompanied by a brief explanation, and where the term differs from the one usually used in France or Germany, the term from those countries is indicated as well. At the end of each half of the book is a list of abbreviations and acronyms frequently encountered in Swiss legal writings, including many single-letter abbreviations that would be impossible to find by searching online. For many of the terms, the dictionary references the precise section number where they can be found in the relevant Swiss Code or Act, making it the perfect place to start an Internet search for additional information.

Download or read book Comanche Vocabulary written by and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This is the most important pre-reservation document that we have for the Comanche language . . . It should be in every university research library.” —James A. Goss, Professor of Anthropology, Texas Tech University The Comanche Vocabulary collected in Mexico during the years 1861–1864 by Manuel García Rejón is by far the most extensive Comanche word list compiled before the establishment of the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Reservation in 1867. It preserves words and concepts that have since changed or even disappeared from the language, thus offering a unique historical window on earlier Comanche culture. This translation adds the English equivalents to the original Spanish-Comanche list of 857 words, as well as a Comanche-English vocabulary and comparisons with later Comanche word lists. Daniel J. Gelo’s introduction discusses the circumstances in which García Rejón gathered his material and annotates significant aspects of the vocabulary in light of current knowledge of Comanche language and culture. The book also includes information on pictography, preserving a rare sample of Comanche scapula drawing. This information will help scholars understand the processes of language evolution and cultural change that occurred among all Native American peoples following European contact. The Comanche Vocabulary will also hold great interest for the large public fascinated by this once-dominant tribe.

Book Synopsis The Translations of Nebrija by : Byron Ellsworth Hamann
Download or read book The Translations of Nebrija written by Byron Ellsworth Hamann and published by Studies in Print Culture and t. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1495, the Spanish humanist Antonio de Nebrija published a Spanish-to-Latin dictionary that became a best seller. Over the next century it was revised dozens of times, in nine European cities. As these dictionaries made their way around the globe in this age of encounters, their lists of Spanish words became frameworks for dictionaries of non-Latin languages. What began as Spanish to Latin became Spanish to Arabic, French, English, Tuscan, Nahuatl, Mayan, Quechua, Aymara, Tagalog, and more. Tracing the global influence of Nebrija's dictionary, Byron Ellsworth Hamann, in this interdisciplinary, deeply researched book, connects pagan Rome, Muslim Spain, Aztec Tenochtitlan, Elizabethan England, the Spanish Philippines, and beyond, revealing new connections in world history. The Translations of Nebrija re-creates the travels of people, books, and ideas throughout the early modern world and reveals the adaptability of Nebrija's text, tracing the ways heirs and pirate printers altered the dictionary in the decades after its first publication. It reveals how entries in various editions were expanded to accommodate new concepts, such as for indigenous languages in the Americas--a process with profound implications for understanding pre-Hispanic art, architecture, and writing. It shows how words written in the margins of surviving dictionaries from the Americas shed light on the writing and researching of dictionaries across the early modern world. Exploring words and the dictionaries that made sense of them, this book charts new global connections and challenges many assumptions about the early modern world.
Book Synopsis The Loom of Language by : Frederick Bodmer
Download or read book The Loom of Language written by Frederick Bodmer and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1985 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an informative introduction to language: its origins in the past, its growth through history, and its present use for communication between peoples. It is at the same time a history of language, a guide to foreign tongues, and a method for learning them. It shows, through basic vocabularies, family resemblances of languages -- Teutonic, Romance, Greek -- helpful tricks of translation, key combinations of roots and phonetic patterns. It presents by common-sense methods the most helpful approach to the mastery of many languages; it condenses vocabulary to a minimum of essential words; it simplifies grammar in an entirely new way; and it teaches a language as it is actually used in everyday life.

This edition includes the facsimile of the original handwritten document. Whereas specialists have known about the existence of Sljunin's Yakut data by indirect references to it in at least one standard dictionary, there was no available information regarding Sljunin's Ewenki data. Furthermore, careful linguistic analysis reveals that the Ewenki variety reflected in Sljunin's dictionary may have already dissapeared.

Book Synopsis A Grammar and Dictionary of Tayap by : Don Kulick
Download or read book A Grammar and Dictionary of Tayap written by Don Kulick and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tayap is a small, previously undocumented Papuan language, spoken in a single village called Gapun, in the lower Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea. The language is an isolate, unrelated to any other in the area. Furthermore, Tayap is dying. Fewer than fifty speakers actively command it today. Based on linguistic anthropological work conducted over the course of thirty years, this book describes the grammar of the language, detailing its phonology, morphology and syntax. It devotes particular attention to verbs, which are the most elaborated area of the grammar, and which are complex, fusional and massively suppletive. The book also provides a full Tayap-English-Tok Pisin dictionary. A particularly innovative contribution is the detailed discussions of how Tayap’'s grammar is dissolving in the language of young speakers. The book exemplifies how the complex structures in fluent speakers’ Tayap are reduced or reanalyzed by younger speakers. This grammar and dictionary should therefore be a valuable resource for anyone interested in the mechanics of how languages disappear. The fact that it is the sole documentation of this unique Papuan language should also make it of interest to areal specialists and language typologists.
Book Synopsis Growing up with Three Languages by : Xiao-lei Wang
Download or read book Growing up with Three Languages written by Xiao-lei Wang and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2008-11-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on an eleven-year observation of two children who were simultaneously exposed to three languages from birth. It tells the story of two parents from different cultural, linguistic, and ethnic-racial backgrounds who joined to raise their two children with their heritage languages outside their native countries. It also tells the children’s story and the way they negotiated three cultures and languages and developed a trilingual identity. It sheds light on how parental support contributed to the children’s simultaneous acquisition of three languages in an environment where the main input of the two heritage languages came respectively from the father and from the mother. It addresses the challenges and the unique language developmental characteristics of the two children during their trilingual acquisition process.
