Book excerpt: Excerpt: ...by he began to revive, and, feeling very hungry, called out to a passing Sheep and said, "Would you kindly bring me some water from the stream close by? I can manage about meat, if only I could get something to drink." But this Sheep was no fool. "I can quite understand," said he, "that if I brought you the water, you would have no difficulty about the meat. Good-morning." THE TUNNY-FISH AND THE DOLPHIN A Tunny-fish was chased by a Dolphin and splashed through the water at a great rate, but the Dolphin gradually gained upon him, and was just about to seize him when the force of his flight carried the Tunny on to a sandbank. In the heat of the chase the Dolphin followed him, and there they both lay out of the water, gasping for dear life. When the Tunny saw that his enemy was doomed like himself, he said, "I don't mind having to die now: for I see that he who is the cause of my death is about to share the same fate." THE THREE TRADESMEN The citizens of a certain city were debating about the best material to use in the fortifications which were about to be erected for the greater security of the town. A Carpenter got up and advised the use of wood, which he said was readily procurable and easily worked. A Stone-mason objected to wood on the ground that it was so inflammable, and recommended stones instead. Then a Tanner got on his legs and said, "In my opinion there's nothing like leather." Every man for himself. THE MOUSE AND THE BULL A Bull gave chase to a Mouse which had bitten him in the nose: but the Mouse was too quick for him and slipped into a hole in a wall. The Bull charged furiously into the wall again and again until he was tired out, and sank down on the ground exhausted with his efforts. When all was quiet, the Mouse darted out and bit him again. Beside himself with rage he started to his feet, but by that time the Mouse was back in his hole again, and he could do nothing but bellow and fume in helpless anger. Presently he heard a...

Book excerpt: This exclusive Signet Classic edition contains 203 of Aesop’s most enduring and popular fables, translated into readable, modern American English and beautifully illustrated with classic woodcuts by the great French artist J. J. Grandville. It is both amazing and wonderful that so much of the richness of our language and our moral education still owes a huge debt to a Greek slave who was executed more than two thousand years ago. Yet “sour grapes,” “crying ‘wolf,’” “actions speak louder than words,” “honesty is the best policy,” and literally hundreds of other metaphors, axioms, and ideas that are now woven into the very fabric of Western culture all came from Aesop’s Fables. An extraordinary storyteller who used cunning foxes, surly dogs, clever mice, fearsome lions, and foolish humans to describe the reality of a harsh world, Aesop created narratives that are appealing, funny, politically astute, and profoundly true. And Aesop’s truth—often summed up in the pithy “moral of the story”—retains an awesome power to affect us, reaching us through both our intellects and our hearts. Including: “The Fox and the Grapes” “The Ants and the Grasshopper” “The Country Mouse and the Town Mouse” …and 200 Other Famous Fables Edited and with an Afterword by Jack Zipes With an Introduction by Sam Pickering

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fables of Aesop and Others: Translated Into English; With Instructive Applications, and a Print Before Each Fable Now, though this imaginary Banquet ofpiulm-re does not carry with it the Weight of a ferions Billory, yet we may take it for granted, that he introduced nothing in his fifiitious Scene, which might contradiet either the written or traditionary Life offli/op but rather chofe to make every Thing agree with it. Be that as it will, this is the Sum of the Account which we have to give of him. Nor, indeed, is it material for us to know the little trifling Circumtlances of his Life; as whether he lived at Samar or Atbenr, whether he was a Slave or a F ree man, whether handfome or ugly. He Has left us a Le gacy in his Writings that will preferve his Memory dear and perpetual among us: What we have to do, there fore, is to thew ourfelves worthy of fo valuable a Pre fent, and to atl, in all Refpetts, as near as we can to the Will and Intention of the Donor. They who are governed by Reafon, need no other Motive than the mere Goodnefs ofa Thing to incite them to the Prac tice ofit. But Men', for the molt Part, are fo fuperti cial in their Enquiries, that they take all upon Trutt and have no Tatte for any Thing but what 15 fupported by the Vogue of others and which it is inconfittent with the F albion of the World not to admire.
