Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Translation and Exposition of the Very Ancient Book of Job Hebrew by birth and native language, and an Arabian by icng residence and local study. He adds, there is intrinsic evidence, that as a Hebrew he must have flou rished and have written the work antecedently to the Egyptian e'xody. The annals of the world do not present to us a single nation so completely wrapped up in their own history as the Hebrews. Throughout every book, both in the Old and New Testament, in which it could possibly be adverted to, the eye of the writer turns to different parts of it, and dwells Upon it with inextinguishable fondness The call of Abraham, the bondage and miracles in Egypt, the journeying through the wilderness, the delivery of the Law, the passage of the Red Sea and of Jordan, &c. &c., are perpetually brought before us, as ornaments and illustrations of the subject discussed. To none of these, however, does. The Book of Job make the smallest refer ence. He observes, moreover, that this poem is dcca sionally quoted and copied by almost every Hebrew Writer, who had an opportunity of referring to it, from the age of Moses to that of Malachi; especially by the Psalmist, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel - leading us by a collateral, though not quite so direct, a train of evidence, to a similar conclusion as to its high origin and anti quity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient Coptic Version of the Book of Job the Just: Translated Into English, and Edited IT may perhaps be sufficient to state here, that the Coptic Version of the Scriptures was made at a very early period of the Christian era. This Version of the Old Testament, ' like all the other ancient Versions of it, was made from the Greek Text, and not from the original Hebrew. The Coptic Version of the Book of Job is now for the first time presented to the public, through the medium of the press. It has been printed from a. Separate Manuscript of that Book, in Coptic and Arabic in parallel columns, as far as Chap. Xix. V. 23, where the Arabic ceases. This was copied, while I was in Egypt, from an ancient one in the Patriarch's library in Cairo. I afterwards collated it, while in Malta, in June 1839, with an old Manuscript in Coptic, belonging to the Rev. Mr. Schleinz and I have since collated it with another ancient Manuscript in Coptic, without an Arabic translation, kindly presented to me by Lord Prudhoe, since my return from Egypt. I therefore believe the text is as perfect as Manuscripts would enable me to make it. A few errors whichare left in the text, uncorrected by the other Manu scripts, I have noticed in the margin. I now send forth the work to the public, in the earnest hope that the remaining parts of the text of the Coptic Version of the Scriptures will be preserved in the same way, for the future benefit of the Coptic Church, by whom it is acknowledged as their standard Version. I also feel assured, that its value and im portance will be appreciated by the Biblical Critic and Divine. I trust the English translation, which is as literal as it could be made, will be found throughout the volume to speak faithfully the sense of the original. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book Called Job: From the Hebrew, With Foot Notes Of late years a new translation of the Scriptures from the Originals has been loudly called for: that is, a translation irrespective of our present English versions - the Douay, and Rheims Roman Catholic English versions, and of our authorized English version called the King James version. No such work has yet appeared. Having been engaged near twenty years, since I left office, in the study of the Scriptures in the languages in which they were written, and published a work a result of such study, I have prepared a translation of the Hebrew of the Book called Job into English. To show the variant renderings of some passages, the Roman Catholic Douay English of them, and the Diodati Italian of them rendered into English, are given in notes at the foot of the page; also the English of many passages, or parts of verses, as given in Gesenius's Hebrew and English Lexicon, the best beyond comparison; also in some passages, the English of them as given in the version of the Book of Job by George E. Noyes, the title page of which is: "A new translation of the Book of Job, with an Introduction, and notes chiefly explanatory;" also in some passages, the English of them as given in the version of Job published by the "American Bible Union," the title page of which is: "The Book of Job. From the original Hebrew on the basis of the Common and earlier English versions." A copy of which latter work was sent to me by a clergyman. The design of the writer of the Book of Job is well illustrated in an able Article upon it by "James Anthony Froude, M.A., Late Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford," in his "Short Studies on Great Subjects." He says: It is the most difficult of all the Hebrew compositions, many words occurring in it, and many thoughts, not to be found elewhere in the Bible. That there are many mythical and physical allusions scattered over the poem, which, in the sixteenth century there were positively no means of understanding, and perhaps, too, says he, there were mental tendencies in the translators themselves, which prevented them from adequately apprehending even the drift and spirit of the composition.
