Book Synopsis The Lure of the Sea by : Alain Corbin
Download or read book The Lure of the Sea written by Alain Corbin and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corbin argues that with few exceptions people living before the eighteenth century knew nothing of the attractions of the coast, the visual delight of the sea, the desire to brave the force of the waves or to feel the coolness of sand against the skin. The image of the ocean in the popular consciousness was coloured by Biblical and mythical recollections of sea monsters, voracious whales, and catastrophic floods. It was perceived as sinister and unchanging, a dark, unfathomable force inspiring horror rather than attraction. These associations of catastrophe and fear in the minds of Europeans intensified the repulsion they felt towards deserted and dismal shores.

Download or read book Bradshaw’s Handbook written by George Bradshaw and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-20 with total page 1086 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collector's item, landmark in the history of the tour guide, snapshot of Britain in the 1860s – Bradshaw's Handbook deserves a place on the bookshelf of any traveller, railway enthusiast, historian or anglophile. Produced as the British railway network was reaching its zenith, and as tourism by rail became a serious pastime for the better off, it was the first national tourist guide specifically organized around railway journeys, and to this day offers a glimpse through the carriage window at a Britain long past. This is a facsimile of the actual book – often referred to as 'Bradshaw's Guide' – that inspired the 'Great British Railway Journeys' television series, possibly the only surviving example of the 1863 edition. It is an exact copy with a removable belly-band.
Book Synopsis London’s Working-Class Youth and the Making of Post-Victorian Britain, 1958–1971 by : Felix Fuhg
Download or read book London’s Working-Class Youth and the Making of Post-Victorian Britain, 1958–1971 written by Felix Fuhg and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the emergence of modern working-class youth culture through the perspective of an urban history of post-war Britain, with a particular focus on the influence of young people and their culture on Britain’s self-image as a country emerging from the constraints of its post-Victorian, imperial past. Each section of the book – Society, City, Pop, and Space – considers in detail the ways in which working-class youth culture corresponded with a fast-changing metropolitan and urban society in the years following the decline of the British Empire. Was teenage culture rooted in the urban experience and the transformation of working-class neighbourhoods? Did youth subcultures emerge simply as a reaction to Britain's changing racial demographic? To what extent did leisure venues and institutions function as laboratories for a developing British pop culture, which ultimately helped Britain re-establish its prominence on the world stage? These questions and more are answered in this book.
