Book excerpt: Pseudo-two dimensional (pseudo-2D) fluidized beds, for which the thickness of the system is much smaller than the other two dimensions, is widely used to perform fundamental studies on bubble behavior, solids mixing, or clustering phenomenon in different gas-solids fluidization systems. The abundant data from such experimental systems are very useful for numerical model development and validation. However, it has been reported that two-dimensional (2D) computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations of pseudo-2D gas-solids fluidized beds usually predict poor quantitative agreement with the experimental data, especially for the solids velocity field. In this paper, a new model is proposed to improve the 2D numerical simulations of pseudo-2D gas-solids fluidized beds by properly accounting for the frictional effect of the front and back walls. Two previously reported pseudo-2D experimental systems were simulated with this model. Compared to the traditional 2D simulations, significant improvements in the numerical predictions have been observed and the predicted results are in better agreement with the available experimental data.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this investigation is to numerically predict the effect of an electric field on a two-dimensional gas-solid fluidized bed. The particles in the bed are taken to be of a uniform size and density forming the particulate phase with a gas (air) taken as the continuum phase. A hydrodynamic model of fluidization utilizes the principles of conservation of mass and momentum describing the multiphase flow equations along with the constitutive equations of gas-solid drag and solids stress. A two-dimensional unsteady-state computer code (K-Fix) was used to observe the effect of an electric field on the gas and solid velocities and the void fraction and pressure in the bed. Special case studies included that of a jet, a bubble, and two bubbles, with and without an electric field.

Book excerpt: A fluidization model was developed by adopting the transport equations of the gas and solid phases and the constitutive relations for the solid phase derived by Ding [1]. Finite difference method was used for the numerical solution of the set of partial differential equations governing the gas solid two-phase flow. The develop model has the capability of treating a variety of boundary and initial conditions. The model was applied for the simulation of bubbling fluidization with a rectangular obstacle over a central jet and uniform gas distribution system a in a two-dimensional bed. The model was also applied for the computation of circulating fluidized (CFB) and to observe the effect of particle inelasticity on the hydrodynamics of CFB.

Book excerpt: Energy demands throughout the globe has been increasing and the detrimental effects of carbon emissions on the environment by use of non-renewable resources has impacted life on the planet. The changing climate has caused an increase in natural calamities all over the globe. Many countries in the world have started to produce power using renewable resources like solar, biomass, wind energy, nuclear energy and green fuels. Though there are several technologies for power generation using the above sources, efficient design of these systems still needs lot of research. Mathematical modeling would play a vital role in design of state of the art technologies. Advanced nuclear power plants need special mention since they involve naturally driven safety systems where the complex phenomena of boiling, condensation and thermal stratification take place. These are difficult to model as there is more than one phase coupled with turbulence models, near wall phenomena, coalescence and break up, etc. Scaling up of such systems and their innovative design to reduce stratification requires the help of mathematical modeling. Other opportunities include Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling for design of wind turbines for power generation using wind energy. Power generation from biomass involves use of gasifiers which has complex set of reactions and mostly two or three phases which are difficult to model using CFD at industrial scales.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid-solid circulating fluidized bed (LSCFB) reactors are obtaining extensive attraction in the extraction process of functional proteins from industrial broth. A typical LSCFB is comprised of a riser, a downcomer, a liquid-solid separator, a top solids-return pipe and a bottom solids-return pipe. In light of the literature review conducted in this research, a detailed modeling of the protein extraction using an LSCFB ion-exchange system requires a microscopic study including hydrodynamic field, mass transfer and kinetics reactions. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to simulate the hydrodynamics of the two phase flow in an LSCFB riser. The model is based on Eulerian-Eulerian (E-E) approach incorporating the kinetic theory of granular flow. The predicted flow characteristics agree well with our earlier experimental data. Furthermore, the model can predict the residence time of both liquid and solid phases in the riser using a pulse technique. A numerical model was developed to predict the protein extraction process using an LSCFB ion exchange system. The model for the riser is an extension of the previous CFD hydrodynamic model for the riser incorporating the kinetics reaction. The model for the downcomer includes a one-dimensional mathematical model using the adsorption kinetics correlations. The numerical predictions were compared favorably with the experimental data from a lab-scale system. The model was used to investigate the effects of operating condition on the protein production rate and the system efficiency. For further study on the hydrodynamics in the downcomer of an LSCFB, the CFD technique was used to simulate the counter-current two phase flow in the downcomer. The model is based on E-E approach incorporating the kinetic theory of granular flow. The predicted results agree well with our earlier experimental data. Furthermore, it is shown that the bed expansion of the particles in the downcomer is directly affected by the superficial liquid velocity in downcomer and solids circulation rate. As results, it is demonstrated that the developed CFD model can be adapted to simulate and control the other applications of the LSCFB, such as wastewater treatment, petroleum and metallurgical industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research involves a numerical study of the hydrodynamics of gas fluidized beds. We use the continuum model, treating both gas and particles as interpenetrating continua. The motion of gas and particles is strongly coupled by the interactions between them. For simplicity, we only consider drag forces. We use MacCormack's numerical method to solve the hyperbolic like equations and successive error vector propagation method or a marching tridiagonal method to solve the elliptic equation for pressure, depending on the situation considered (i.e. boundary conditions and geometry). In order to understand the basic phenomena, we consider the propagation of a finite disturbance of sine wave shape in one dimension. The disturbance grows in amplitude and forms a voidage shock. Next, the two dimensional case is analyzed, starting from the uniform fluidization condition. A jet is introduced at the bottom and the formation of a bubble and its motion is observed. Additionally, we introduce a bubble inside the bed and observe its effect on bed hydrodynamics. We then calculate the rise velocity of the bubble and find that it compares well with empirical correlations. We also consider the two dimensional case with a rectangular obstacle. The initial condition is calculated using D'Arcy's law. We observe the particle packing on the top and the local expansion phenomenon under the obstacle as well as the interaction of a rising bubble. The numerical results for this case agree qualitatively with experimental observations reported by others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical models of fluidized beds based on the multiphase mass and momentum balance equations for gas and solids phases continue to be developed by several groups of researchers around the world. It has been demonstrated that the same set of equations is able to describe a wide range of fluidization conditions, ranging from bubbling to circulating fluidized beds. The results of bubbling bed simulations, plots of void fraction distribution, show the formation and propagation of high void fraction regions, called bubbles. This study shows that these problems are numerical artifacts of using first order accurate discretization schemes and coarse grids and are not due to a fundamental difficulty with the theory. This study was motivated by the observation that the shape of the gas hold up profile described by Sokolichin et al. is similar to that of the shape of bubbles in a fluidized bed. Second-order accurate discretization schemes were included in a multiphase flow model of fluidized beds called MFIX. It is shown here that the bubble shape predicted with a second order accurate scheme is rounded. The simulations were conducted for long durations (5 s) and the results did not show the fountain formation at the bed surface. It appears that the fountain formation is caused by coarse grids and low physical viscosity of the solids phase.
