Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Method for Caesar This book has grown out of the experimental work in Latin pedagogy which the author has carried on for several years at the State University of Iowa with the cooperation of the Iowa City public schools. It is offered as a solution of the universally recognized difficulty in passing from the beginner's book to Caesar. The method followed is to give the particular preparation for a given chapter before the pupil attempts to read it. This makes it possible for the pupil to begin his reading of Caesar immediately after finishing the elementary book. The difficulties which the beginner in Caesar meets have been carefully studied and provided for with a view to his accumulating knowledge for future work as well as doing what is immediately before him. It is assumed that the pupil knows a vocabulary of about three hundred common words, which are found in most beginner's books. Additional words, as they occur, are given in the special vocabularies, and all may be found in the general vocabulary at the end of the hook. Idiomatic expressions, which cause the pupil to blunder with the thought or with the English translation, have been treated with the special vocabularies, and it is hoped that this feature of the book will commend itself strongly to teachers. A good rule is to dwell upon passages so long as the pupil's interest does not ﬂag. I have found in my own classes that it is possible 'to advance rapidly, even through matter abounding in difficulties, by distributing the items of research among the individuals of a class. The most shaming kind of recitation is that to which each pupil brings his own preparation, unlike that of any other. To such a recitation all listen with eagerness. In my annotation, as often as it seemed feasible, I have referred the student, for light on special points, to other pas sages in the poet's works. The habit of seeking explana tions of Shakespearian difficulties in Shakespeare himself is of the very first importance. It has seemed to me also de sirable to familiarize the learner in this way with the plays at large, even though it be only to such extent as is implied in turning the leaves and searching for passages and words. These references are to the Globe Shakespeare, published by Macmillan Co. As this book has come to be almost universally recognized by Shakespeare scholars as a stand ard for purposes of reference, and is exceedingly cheap, it may be named as the first requisite among collateral helps for the study of the poet.
