Have the vocabularies and idioms committed to memory as the first step in preparing for the Caesar to be immediately read. Take time in the recitation to drill the class on these word lists. In no other way can the pupil escape the tyranny of the general vocabulary. When assigning the lesson, go over the vocabulary with the class and call up related words in both Latin and English. Explain the literal meaning of the idioms. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Method for Caesar This book has grown out of the experimental work in Latin pedagogy which the author has carried on for several years at the State University of Iowa with the cooperation of the Iowa City public schools. It is offered as a solution of the universally recognized difficulty in passing from the beginner's book to Caesar. The method followed is to give the particular preparation for a given chapter before the pupil attempts to read it. This makes it possible for the pupil to begin his reading of Caesar immediately after finishing the elementary book. The difficulties which the beginner in Caesar meets have been carefully studied and provided for with a view to his accumulating knowledge for future work as well as doing what is immediately before him. It is assumed that the pupil knows a vocabulary of about three hundred common words, which are found in most beginner's books. Additional words, as they occur, are given in the special vocabularies, and all may be found in the general vocabulary at the end of the hook. Idiomatic expressions, which cause the pupil to blunder with the thought or with the English translation, have been treated with the special vocabularies, and it is hoped that this feature of the book will commend itself strongly to teachers. Hale and Buck's Latin Grammar has been taken as authority for the quantities of vowels. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eight Books of Caesar's Gallic War This new edition of the text is the result of an endeavor to present the facts of the language and explain and illustrate the subject-matter in a manner different from the traditional method, which has been, we think, too Closely adhered to in the past. The justification for a new text-book of Caesar will be found, it is hoped, in the features of this work which distinguish it from previous editions. These are the following. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Year Latin For Sight Reading: Selections From Caesar And Nepos This volume contains considerably more Latin than is generally read in the second year. The purpose of the additional matter is that the teacher may be given a com paratively wide range of choice and not that a much greater amount be read. It cannot be too strongly urged that teachers should exercise the utmost care lest sight trans lation become a matter of quantity rather than of quality, and lest the pupil think that translation is the result of combining memory with guesswork. It must be under stood that the purpose of sight translation is the develop ment of power - not the careless reading of much Latin. The difference between sight translation and the prepared translation is one not of quantity but simply of method. In sight translation, only that information is given which is absolutely and wholly new to the pupil. For the rest he must depend upon his own experience and ingenuity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar The notes appended to these pages will be found few in comparison with the noteworthy points. There are not many lines of Shakespeare that do not furnish occasion for some sort of comment. Teachers will use their discretion as to the time they shall linger over any given matter. A good rule is to dwell upon passages so long as the pupil's interest does not flag. I have found in my own classes that it is possible 'to advance rapidly, even through matter abounding in difficulties, by distributing the items of research among the individuals of a class. The most shaming kind of recitation is that to which each pupil brings his own preparation, unlike that of any other. To such a recitation all listen with eagerness. In my annotation, as often as it seemed feasible, I have referred the student, for light on special points, to other pas sages in the poet's works. The habit of seeking explana tions of Shakespearian difficulties in Shakespeare himself is of the very first importance. It has seemed to me also de sirable to familiarize the learner in this way with the plays at large, even though it be only to such extent as is implied in turning the leaves and searching for passages and words. These references are to the Globe Shakespeare, published by Macmillan Co. As this book has come to be almost universally recognized by Shakespeare scholars as a stand ard for purposes of reference, and is exceedingly cheap, it may be named as the first requisite among collateral helps for the study of the poet. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “Julius Caesar (The Unabridged Play) + The Classic Biography: The Life of William Shakespeare” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Written around 1599, Julius Caesar is a tragedy by William Shakespeare. The play is based on historical events surrounding the conspiracy against the ancient Roman leader Julius Caesar (c.100-44B.C.) and the civil war that followed his death. Shakespeare portrays Caesar's assassination on the Ides of March (March 15) by a group of conspirators who feared the ambitious leader would turn the Roman Republic into a tyrannical monarchy. Shakespeare' s main source for the play is Plutarch's famous biography The Life of Julius Caesar, written in Greek in the 1st century and translated into English in 1579 by Sir Thomas North. Life of William Shakespeare is a biography of William Shakespeare by the eminent critic Sidney Lee. This book was one of the first major biographies of the Bard of Avon. It was published in 1898, based on the article contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. Sir Sidney Lee (1859 – 1926) was an English biographer and critic. He was a lifelong scholar and enthusiast of Shakespeare. His article on Shakespeare in the fifty-first volume of the Dictionary of National Biography formed the basis of his Life of William Shakespeare. This full-length life is often credited as the first modern biography of the poet.
