Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shinzo Abe entered politics burdened by high expectations: that he would change Japan. In 2007, seemingly overwhelmed, he resigned after only a year as prime minister. Yet, following five years of reinvention, he masterfully regained the premiership in 2012, and now dominates Japanese democracy as no leader has done before. Abe has inspired fierce loyalty among his followers, cowing Japan's left with his ambitious economic program and support for the security and armed forces. He has staked a leadership role for Japan in a region being rapidly transformed by the rise of China and India, while carefully preserving an ironclad relationship with Trump's America. The Iconoclast tells the story of Abe's meteoric rise and stunning fall, his remarkable comeback, and his unlikely emergence as a global statesman laying the groundwork for Japan's survival in a turbulent century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel's Prophecies: The Next Level. Popular singer-songwriter, James Blunt, encourages: "You've got to ask yourself the question: 'Where are you now?'" This one can ask of the human race as a whole. Following a completely different exegetical approach to the prophecies of Daniel, this author attempts to answer this very question. A definition of prophecy is "history written in advance". However, an angel ordered Daniel to seal the book until the end time. Many will rove about and the true knowledge will become abundant. He added that no wicked one will understand, but that the ones having insight, will understand (cf. Dan. 12:4, 9, 10). Wicked ones have no future in God's "new earth", so one ignores these prophecies at your peril (cf. Ps. 37:38; Prov. 2:21, 22; 2 Pet. 3:13). This monograph concentrates on Dan. 11:40-45. The new edition includes a Concise Messianic Timeline and a Quick Reference Guide for quick and easy reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes both a historical and personal views of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The historical view is provided by Dr. Devine, Joel Liebesfeld, Todd Liebesfeld, Esq., and Prof. Schuber. The personal view is presented by Dr. Doherty who discusses the account of Robert J. Walsh, a U.S. Army 34th Infantry soldier telephone lineman, who was stationed near Nagasaki. Robert took approximately 275 pictures for his photo album with a simple Kodak camera. Many of the pictures are at ground zero and show the devastation of the atomic bomb as well as a marker for the epicenter. Robert was also electrocuted on high voltage wires and fell off a telephone pole to the ground. His back was broken in three places and he was put in a coma so that he would stay still and the back could be fused. While in a coma, Robert was lost in one of the nearby hospitals. His mother received a telegram that he was lost. His mother was completely beside herself and turned to Congressman Fred A. Hartley Jr. for help. Congressman Hartley launched an investigation and found Robert in a hospital in Japan. Robert was in a body cast for two years, part of it in a coma, but did not get a bed sore due to the results of a Japanese nurse named Snowball who invented a special medical instrument that she used with Robert. Robert was brought back home and brought back to Walter Reed Hospital where doctors used innovative techniques to help him heal and walk again. The book also ends with Robert as a senior citizen who lives a normal life leading a dance group at his retirement center.

Book excerpt: "Her parents moved her from Austria to Tokyo, Japan before she started school. They were all rendered stateless when Nazi Germany and Austria stripped Jews of their citizenship. She graduated high school fluent in Japanese plus four other languages and went to college in America at age 15. Cut off from her parents by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and America's entry into World War II, she went years not knowing if they were alive. She returned to post-war Japan as an interpreter, found her parents, and wrote the fateful words that make her a storied feminist hero in that nation even today. As Justice Sonia Sotomayor said about Beate Sirota Gordon, 'It is a rare life treat for a Supreme Court Justice to get to meet a framer of a Constitution. It is rarer indeed for that framer to have been a woman'"--

Book excerpt: In a timely, even prophetic, portrait of Asia's rise and the magnitude of its challenge to the West, Fallows demolishes the myth that Japan is a capitalist country built on the Western model. He demonstrates instead how Japan's economic system treats business as an instrument of national interest while casting aside the traditional Western values of individual enterprise and human rights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After two decades of reinvention, Japanese companies are re-emerging as major players in the new digital economy. They have responded to the rise of China and new global competition by moving upstream into critical deep-tech inputs and advanced materials and components. This new "aggregate niche strategy" has made Japan the technology anchor for many global supply chains. Although the end products do not carry a "Japan Inside" label, Japan plays a pivotal role in our everyday lives across many critical industries. This book is an in-depth exploration of current Japanese business strategies that make Japan the world's third-largest economy and an economic leader in Asia. To accomplish their reinvention, Japan's largest companies are building new processes of breakthrough innovation. Central to this book is how they are addressing the necessary changes in organizational design, internal management processes, employment, and corporate governance. Because Japan values social stability and economic equality, this reinvention is happening slowly and methodically, and has gone largely unnoticed by Western observers. Yet, Japan's more balanced model of "caring capitalism" is both competitive and transformative, and more socially responsible than the unbridled growth approach of the United States.

Book excerpt: Japanese white-collar workers have been characterised by their intense loyalty and life-long commitment to their companies. This book is based on very extensive ethnographic research inside a Japanese insurance company during the period when the company was going through a major crisis which ended in the company's bankruptcy and collapse. It examines the attitudes of Japanese employees towards their work, their company and related issues at a time when the established order and established attitudes were under threat. The wide range and detail of the reporting of workers' attitudes, often in their own words, sustained over a considerable timescale, makes this study a particularly valuable resource.
