Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than twenty years, Australia's forests have been the subject of angry controversy. Industry groups, timber towns, professional foresters, trade unions, economists, developers and environmentalists have all voiced different proposals, based on mutually exclusive values. Major battles have aroused intense passions and influenced elections. But the book not only covers recent events; it reviews forest management from Aboriginal times, demonstrating that the forests and our conceptions of them are socially constructed Dr Dargavel weaves together the story of industrial development and forest use with the slow acceptance of the case for forest conservancy. He shows how various 'resource regimes' evolved, and how they fashioned the forests in different ways-ecologically, spatially and socially. He then describes the challenges to these established patterns since the 1970s--industrial restructuring, woodchip exports, unsustainable harvesting, and the rise of the environmental movement. The book concludes with the prospects for the forests, their industries and workers, in a highly uncertain future. Australians must choose between travelling the "low road" of apathetic submission to market forces and ignorance and taking a long, hard "high road" towards sustainable development in which both social and environmental needs are taken seriously. The issues discussed will interest those involved in forestry, historical geography, and environmental sciences, history, and politics.

Book excerpt: Australia has many different types of forests, and each has its own fascinating animals and plants. Forests are the lungs of our planet, and Australia's forests include the descendants of ancient plant and animal life that is found nowhere else on Earth. The forests have been important for the welfare of Indigenous Australians for thousands of years. Since colonisation, the timbers from forests have contributed to the expansion of settlement and the growth in Australia's economy. Discover the threats to Australia's forests, and find out what can be done to keep them healthy, so that they are still there well into the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides scientific evidence to underline the notion that forests offer the most reliable water catchments in the natural environment. The unique Australian ecosystem provides valuable information on the water yields and hydro-ecology of forests. Insights can be transferred to other climate zones and conditions. In this second edition, the author puts a particular focus on the most prominent challenges of our time, in relation to water management. Ground salinity, climate change, and droughts have all been newly added to this updated edition. One of the most important concepts is highlighting the accumulated contribution of smaller catchments and minor streams. Finally, readers will also get information on the economic dimension of water management. With its incisive, disciplined, and quantitative (and occasionally humorous) approach, this book helps scientists, students, and regulators to understand water-driven conflicts and offers guidance on management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Losses of forests and their insect inhabitants are a major global conservation concern, spanning tropical and temperate forest regions throughout the world. This broad overview of Australian forest insect conservation draws on studies from many places to demonstrate the diversity and vulnerability of forest insects and how their conservation may be pursued through combinations of increased understanding, forest protection and silvicultural management in both natural and plantation forests. The relatively recent history of severe human disturbance to Australian forests ensures that reasonably natural forest patches remain and serve as ‘models’ for many forest categories. They are also refuges for many forest biota extirpated from the wider landscapes as forests are lost, and merit strenuous protection from further changes, and wider efforts to promote connectivity between otherwise isolated remnant patches. In parallel, the recent attention to improving forest insect conservation in harmony with insect pest management continues to benefit from perspectives generated from better-documented faunas elsewhere. Lessons from the northern hemisphere, in particular, have led to revelations of the ecological importance and vulnerability of many insect taxa in forests, together with clear evidence that ‘conservation can work’ in concert with wider forest uses. A brief outline of the variety of Australian tropical and temperate forests and woodlands, and of the multitude of endemic and, often, highly localised insects that depend on them highlights needs for conservation (both of single focal species and wider forest-dependent radiations and assemblages). The ways in which insects contribute to sustained ecological integrity of these complex ecosystems provide numerous opportunities for practical conservation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is one of the most serious global challenges facing humankind. Climate change has enormous environmental and economic implications, and finding a solution is a daunting task. The purpose of this book is to look at the global problem of climate change through the prism of an individual country's attempt to tackle this problem. This book begins with a discussion of the origins of climate change and the evolution of the international response to climate change. Key climate change mitigation actions and policies are considered to provide the necessary framework for analysing Australia's approach to climate change. Australia's climate change policy development is considered from a historical perspective. The book traces the evolution of the response to climate change, focusing on Australia as one of the Federal countries unable to adequately reduce greenhouse gas emissions due to the systematic failure of the Australian government to develop a common and effective approach to the problem of climate change. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of environmental law and the contemporary International and Australian climate change law.

Book excerpt: Forest Family highlights the importance of the old-growth forests of Southwest Australia to art, culture, history, politics, and community identity. The volume weaves together the natural and cultural histories of Southwest eucalypt forests, spanning pre-settlement, colonial, and contemporary periods. The contributors critique a range of content including historical documents, music, novels, paintings, performances, photography, poetry, and sculpture representing ancient Australian forests. Forest Family centers on the relationship between old-growth nature and human culture through the narrative strand of the Giblett family of Western Australia and the forests in which they settled during the nineteenth century. The volume will be of interest to general readers of environmental history, as well as scholars in critical plant studies and the environmental humanities.

Although the focus in predominantly Australian, contrasting international perspectives from New Zealand, southeast Asia, South Africa and both North and South America illustrate the universality of many of the issues"--Book jacket.
