Book excerpt: The author of Hidden History offers a fascinating tour through centuries of buried riches, stolen artifacts, and other true tales of treasure. The allure of treasure has captivated people for centuries. But is it purely a desire for wealth that draws us to tales of hidden riches, or is it also the romantic appeal of uncovering lost ancient artifacts? The stories behind the loss and recovery of ancient treasures often read like historical suspense fiction. In Ancient Treasures, readers discover the true histories of lost hoards, looted archaeological artifacts, and sunken treasures, including: The Sevso Treasure, a hoard of large silver vessels from the late Roman Empire—estimated to be worth $200 million—looted in the 1970s and sold on the black market. The Amber Room, a chamber decoration of amber panels backed with gold leaf and mirrors, stolen by the Nazis in 1941 and brought to the castle at Königsberg in Russia, from which it disappeared. The fabulous wealth of Roman and Viking hoards buried in the ground for safekeeping, only to be unearthed centuries later by humble metal detectorists. The wrecks of the Spanish treasure fleets, whose New World plunder has been the target of elaborate salvage attempts by modern treasure hunters

Book excerpt: A journey across four continents to the heart of the conflict over who should own the great works of ancient art Why are the Elgin Marbles in London and not on the Acropolis? Why do there seem to be as many mummies in France as there are in Egypt? Why are so many Etruscan masterworks in America? For the past two centuries, the West has been plundering the treasures of the ancient world to fill its great museums, but in recent years, the countries where ancient civilizations originated have begun to push back, taking museums to court, prosecuting curators, and threatening to force the return of these priceless objects. Where do these treasures rightly belong? Sharon Waxman, a former culture reporter for The New York Times and a longtime foreign correspondent, brings us inside this high-stakes conflict, examining the implications for the preservation of the objects themselves and for how we understand our shared cultural heritage. Her journey takes readers from the great cities of Europe and America to Egypt, Turkey, Greece, and Italy, as these countries face down the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum, the British Museum, and the J. Paul Getty Museum. She also introduces a cast of determined and implacable characters whose battles may strip these museums of some of their most cherished treasures. For readers who are fascinated by antiquity, who love to frequent museums, and who believe in the value of cultural exchange, Loot opens a new window on an enduring conflict.

Book excerpt: 'Ancient Treasures' examines the hunt for ancient treasure troves and hoards, whether they contain gold and jewels, or important artifacts that offer us a window on to the past. Part of the Treasure Hunters series, 'Ancient Treasures' offers a crosscurricular mix of science & technology and history, with a fun, dramatic approach. Treasures covered in the book include the Roman Hoxne Hoard, the Anglo-Saxon Staffordshire Hoard, the extraordinary discoveries of the Rosetta Stone and Dead Sea Scrolls, and the South American treasures of Lake Guatavita. The book also looks at the motives for these searches, and the importance of responsible archaeology: were the treasure hunters driven by personal greed or glory, or did they embark on their quest with a historical interest and a desire to preserve the lost treasures?

Book excerpt: The tale begins over three-hundred years ago, when the Fair People—the goblins, fairies, dragons, and other fabled and fantastic creatures of a dozen lands—fled the Old World for the New, seeking haven from the ways of Man. With them came their precious jewels: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls... But then the Fair People vanished, taking with them their twelve fabulous treasures. And they remained hidden until now... Across North America, these twelve treasures, over ten-thousand dollars in precious jewels, are buried. The key to finding each can be found within the twelve full color paintings and verses of The Secret. Yet The Secret is much more than that. At long last, you can learn not only the whereabouts of the Fair People's treasure, but also the modern forms and hiding places of their descendants: the Toll Trolls, Maitre D'eamons, Elf Alphas, Tupperwerewolves, Freudian Sylphs, Culture Vultures, West Ghosts and other delightful creatures in the world around us. The Secret is a field guide to them all. Many "armchair treasure hunt" books have been published over the years, most notably Masquerade (1979) by British artist Kit Williams. Masquerade promised a jewel-encrusted golden hare to the first person to unravel the riddle that Williams cleverly hid in his art. In 1982, while everyone in Britain was still madly digging up hedgerows and pastures in search of the golden hare, The Secret: A Treasure Hunt was published in America. The previous year, author and publisher Byron Preiss had traveled to 12 locations in the continental U.S. (and possibly Canada) to secretly bury a dozen ceramic casques. Each casque contained a small key that could be redeemed for one of 12 jewels Preiss kept in a safe deposit box in New York. The key to finding the casques was to match one of 12 paintings to one of 12 poetic verses, solve the resulting riddle, and start digging. Since 1982, only two of the 12 casques have been recovered. The first was located in Grant Park, Chicago, in 1984 by a group of students. The second was unearthed in 2004 in Cleveland by two members of the Quest4Treasure forum. Preiss was killed in an auto accident in the summer of 2005, but the hunt for his casques continues.

However, in the opinion of most people, many of these items are looted property and should be returned immediately. In 'Keeping Their Marbles', Tiffany Jenkins tells the intriguing and sometimes bloody story of how the West came to acquire these treasures. Originally published: 2016.

Book excerpt: "This exhibition catalogue includes entries and essays by over fifty leading scholars covering the last 200,000 years. More than 320 objects, drawn from the Sudan National Museum collection, are described and illustrated in colour, ranging from Palaeolithic stone tools, Pharaonic statues and Christian wall paintings to armour of the early Islamic period. Many of these little-known treasures have never been exhibited previously, others are on display for the first time outside Sudan. Most are recent discoveries and, importantly, have an accurate provenance as they come from archaeological excavations. Key items highlight the contrast between the world views of many Sudanese cultures: from the demonstrations of worldly power of the Kerma kings, accompanied to their deaths by 400 sacrificed persons, to the humble graves of Christian rulers; from the grandiose temples built by the Egyptian pharaohs to the churches and mosques of later periods."--BOOK JACKET.

Using photographs, drawings and diagrams from the original expedition, it brings to life the excitement and wonderment that Carter and Carnarvon must have felt upon opening the tomb. It also describes the painstaking efforts that were taken as they and their team slowly investigated the wealth of objects that had lain hidden for centuries. It also addresses its impact on the study of Egyptology and the more far-reaching effects it has had.

Packed with outstanding photographs accompanying an insightful text, this book traces the evolution of ancient India, examining the major historical events from the 3rd millennium BC until the arrival of the Muslims in the 12th century AD. The text delves into aspects of daily life in ancient India-the social and political structures, village and city life, arts and aesthetics, and religion. The final section is a useful reference for travelers to India, presenting the country's most important artistic and religious sites, complete with floor plans, close-up details of statues and works of art, and a wealth of photographs that walk us through the country's most significant monuments. Throughout the book, hundreds of images depict the jewelry, statuary, and other artifacts created during each epoch, revealing details of daily life, spiritual beliefs, changes in dress and fashion, advances in technology, and much more. At the back of the book, an extensive glossary explains relevant terms. Anyone interested in ancient civilizations will be fascinated by this painstakingly researched and gorgeously illustrated volume.
