Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The point geometry of a twist drill is the most significant part which may affect to cutting performance in the drilling process. However, it is really complicated to establish an exact mathematic equation to represent the conical flank surface of a twist drill. In order to simplify the problem and meet the practical engineering demand in the industry, this research focuses on developing an approximate mathematic model of the conical drill point geometry. Additionally, an integrated CAD/CAM software is developed. This software integrates the modelling function of flute, margin, point and split features and is able to calculate grinding path of each feature. With the help of this software, drill geometric parameters can be modified reasonably according to different requirements easier than ever. Finally, this research also mentions a CAD/CAM/CAE application to evaluate the cutting performance of a twist drill. The designed 3D model can be imported in Thridwave to predict cutting force, torque and peak temperature during the drilling process. Based on these simulative factors, the cutting performance of a twist drill can be generally evaluated. Four evaluated designs were selected and ground by 5-axis CNC grinding machine. The geometry of the ground drill shows a good agreement with the dimension of each design parameter, which validates the accuracy of the proposed modelling method and the corresponding grinding path.

Book excerpt: The International Conference on Production Research has a good tradition: The fIrst Conference was held in Birmingham 1971 with 61 participants. With respect to the decision that the Conference should be held every second year, by this time the Conference has been held in the following countries: Birmingham (1971, UK), Copenhagen (1973, Denmark), Amhurst (1975, USA), Tokyo (1977, Japan), Amsterdam (1979, The Netherlands), Novi Sad (1981, Yugoslavia), Windsor (1983, Canada), Stuttgart (1985, Germany), and the next Conference will take place in Cincinnatti (1987, USA). The number of submitted abstracts and papers was continuously increas ing such that the Programme Committee of this actual 8th Conference on Production Research has been forced to introduce a further refereeing procedure. Each submitted abstract was presented to at least two referees. This resulted not only in a reduction of the number of presented full papers and poster contributions but, as the Programme Committee and the Editiors hope, it led also to a considerable increase in the scientifIc quality of this 8th International Conference on Production Research. The preceeding conference in Windsor, Canada, was dedicated to the topic: Production Research as a Means of Productivity Improvement. We don't believe that this statement has become untrue in the meanwhile.

The careful balance between precision and efficiency is maintained only through intimate knowledge of the physical processes, material characteristics, and technological capabilities of the equipment and workpieces involved. The best-selling first edition of Metal Cutting Theory and Practice provided such knowledge, integrating timely research with current industry practice. This brilliant reference enters its second edition with fully updated coverage, new sections, and the inclusion of examples and problems. Supplying complete, up-to-date information on machine tools, tooling, and workholding technologies, this second edition stresses a physical understanding of machining processes including forces, temperatures, and surface finish. This provides a practical basis for troubleshooting and evaluating vendor claims. In addition to updates in all chapters, the book features three new chapters on cutting fluids, agile and high-throughput machining, and design for machining. The authors also added examples and problems for additional hands-on insight. Rounding out the treatment, an entire chapter is devoted to machining economics and optimization. Endowing you with practical knowledge and a fundamental understanding of underlying physical concepts, Metal Cutting Theory and Practice, Second Edition is a necessity for designing, evaluating, purchasing, and using machine tools.

Book excerpt: In Engineering Design and Graphics with SolidWorks 2019, award-winning CAD instructor and author James Bethune shows students how to use SolidWorks to create engineering drawings and designs. The textbook has been updated to cover the new features in SolidWorks 2019, including a brand-new chapter with sample problems to help students prepare for the CSWA Exam. It focuses on the creation of engineering drawings, including dimensions and tolerances and the use of standard parts and tools. Each chapter contains step-by-step sample problems that show students how to apply the concepts presented in the chapter. Effective pedagogy throughout the text helps students learn and retain concepts: OBJECTIVES: Each chapter begins with objectives and an introduction to the material. SUMMARIES: Each chapter concludes with a summary and exercise problems. NUMEROUS ILLUSTRATIONS: The multitude of illustrations, accompanied by explanatory captions, present a visual approach to learning. Students see in the text what they see on the screen with the addition of explanatory text. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The text provides hundreds of exercise projects of varying difficulty (far more than any other computer graphics text). These exercises reinforce each chapter’s content and help students learn by doing. FLEXIBILITY: With the hundreds of problems presented in the book, instructors can assign different problems within the same class and from year to year without repeating problems for students. MEETS STANDARDS: The text teaches ANSI standards for dimensions and tolerances. This helps students understand how their designs are defined for production and the importance of proper tolerancing. STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH: In presenting the fundamentals of engineering drawing using SolidWorks, the text uses a step-by-step approach that allows students to work and learn at their own pace. CSWA EXAM PREP: This edition includes sample problems to help students prepare for the CSWA Exam.

Book excerpt: Metal removal processes - cutting and grinding in this book - are an integral part of a large number of manufacturing systems, either as the primary manufacturing process, or as an important part of preparing the tooling for other manufacturing processes. In recent years, industry and educational institutions have concentrated on the metal removal system, perhaps at the expense of the process. This book concentrates on metal removal processes, particularly on the modeling aspects that can either give a direct answer or suggest the general requirements as to how to control, improve or change a metal removal process. This modeling knowledge is more important with automated computer controlled systems than it has ever been before, because quantitative knowledge is needed to design and operate these systems. This senior undergraduate/graduate textbook is aimed at providing the quantitative knowledge, often times at an elementary level, for handling the technological aspects of setting up and operating a metal removal process and interpreting the experience of planning, operating and improving a metal removal process based on rule of thumb approaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymer matrix composites are finding increasing number of applications due to their high weight-saving potential as well as unique characteristics, such as high strength-to-density ratio, fatigue resistance, high damping factor, and freedom from corrosion. While many textbooks are available on the mechanics of polymer matrix composites, few cover their processing.Processing of Polymer Matrix Composites fills this gap. The book focuses on the major manufacturing processes used for polymer matrix composites and describes process details, process parameters and their effects on properties and process-induced defects, and analytical and experimental methods used for understanding process conditions. The book describes fibers, thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers, and interface characteristics that are important from the standpoint of both design and processing. It also emphasizes the applications of process fundamentals for both continuous fiber and short fiber polymer matrix composites. In addition the book considers quality inspection methods, tooling, and manufacturing costs and environmental and safety issues.
