Book excerpt: The use of neutron diffraction, neutron inelastic scattering, and optical spectroscopy to probe the nature of the medium-range order (MRO) in amorphous materials is discussed with reference to chalcogenides of GeSe2, SiSe2, and also P50Se50, and SiO2 glasses. While none of these probes provides a unique determination of the MRO, the use of information obtained from the three techniques, supplemented by numerical calculations based on specific structural models, can provide a picture of the essential elements of glass structure. 5 refs., 4 figs.

Book excerpt: A neutron diffraction investigation has been carried out of the structures of several naturally occurring glasses, viz. Libyan Desert glass, a Fulgurite, Wabar glass, Lechatelierite from Canon Diablo, a Tektite, Obsidian (3 samples), and Macusani glass. Libyan Desert sand has also been examined, together with crystalline .cap alpha.-quartz and .cap alpha.-cristobalite. A comparison of data for the natural glasses and synthetic vitreous silica (Spectrosil B) in both reciprocal and real space allows a categorisation into Silicas, which closely resemble synthetic vitreous silica, and Silicates, for which the resemblance to silica is consistently less striking. The data support the view that Libyan Desert glass and sand have a common origin, while the Tektite has a structure similar to that of volcanic glasses.
