Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Network Flows Perhaps no subfield of mathematical programming is more alluring than network optimization. Highway, rail, electrical, communication and many other physical networks pervade our everyday lives. As a consequence, even non-specialists recognize the practical importance and the wide ranging applicability Of networks. Moreover, because the physical operating characteristics of networks flows on arcs and mass balance at nodes) have natural mathematical representations, practitioners and non-specialists can readily understand the mathematical descriptions of network Optimization problems and the basic nature Of techniques used to solve these problems. This combination of widespread applicability and ease of assimilation has undoubtedly been instrumental in the evolution of network planning models as one Of the most widely used modeling techniques in all of operations research and applied mathematics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scheduling plays an important role in protocol design and performance optimizations for wireless or wired networks. This dissertation studies how to achieve optimal performance for two fundamental scheduling problems using network flow techniques. The first problem is Maximum lifetime scheduling for roadside networks. In this problem, sensors are deployed along a road to monitor traffic activities. A set of sensors can form a network if their sensing ranges cover the entire road. Since battery-driven sensors have limited lifetime, we need to schedule each sensor between active and sleep modes such that active sensors form a network to monitor the road while sleeping sensors reserve their energy until their turns to become active. At that time, another sensor network is formed to continue to monitor the road. A challenging problem is how to achieve the optimal schedule that the road can be monitored by such sensing networks, one after the other continuously, for a longest time. The previous research only solved a simple case where all sensors are identical initially. This dissertation presents a network flow model to solve the general case where each sensor may have different initial energy. Furthermore this dissertation presents a novel technique to obtain optimal scheduling for the road surveillance problem with survivability k in which the road needs k independent networks to monitor in order to make sensing data reliable. Second, the problem is Maximum Traffic Time-slot Scheduling (MTTS) problem in SS/TDMA satellite systems. This is a historical scheduling problem proposed decades ago. A two-step approach was developed to solve it. However, the Incremental Time-slot Assignment (ITSA) Problem induced in this two-step approach was proved to be NP-hard, which makes the original MTTS problem seem to be NP-hard. In the past decades, the optimal solution of the MTTS problem remains open. In this dissertation, a preprocessing with network flow technique is developed to achieve the optimal scheduling, which optimally solves this open problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Network flow theory has been used across a number of disciplines, including theoretical computer science, operations research, and discrete math, to model not only problems in the transportation of goods and information, but also a wide range of applications from image segmentation problems in computer vision to deciding when a baseball team has been eliminated from contention. This graduate text and reference presents a succinct, unified view of a wide variety of efficient combinatorial algorithms for network flow problems, including many results not found in other books. It covers maximum flows, minimum-cost flows, generalized flows, multicommodity flows, and global minimum cuts and also presents recent work on computing electrical flows along with recent applications of these flows to classical problems in network flow theory.

Book excerpt: A theoretical and application-oriented analysis of deterministic scheduling problems arising in computer and manufacturing environments. The important classical results are surveyed with particular attention paid to single-processor scheduling, along with general models such as resource-constrained scheduling, flexible flow shops, dynamic job shops, and special flexible manufacturing systems. Polynomial and exponential-time optimization algorithms as well as approximation and heuristic ones are presented using a Pascal-like notation, before being discussed in the light of particular problems. Basic concepts from scheduling theory and related fields are described to assist less advanced readers.

The text examines scheduling problems across a range of parameters: job priority, release times, due dates, processing times, precedence constraints, resource usage and more, focusing on such topics as computer systems and supply chain management. Discussion includes single and parallel processors, flexible shops and manufacturing systems, and resource-constrained project scheduling. Many applications from industry and service operations management and case studies are described. The handbook will be useful to a broad audience, from researchers to practitioners, graduate and advanced undergraduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distributed systems employed in critical infrastructures must fulfill dependability, timeliness, and performance specifications. Since these systems most often operate in an unpredictable environment, their design and maintenance require quantitative evaluation of deterministic and probabilistic timed models. This need gave birth to an abundant literature devoted to formal modeling languages combined with analytical and simulative solution techniques The aim of the book is to provide an overview of techniques and methodologies dealing with such specific issues in the context of distributed systems and covering aspects such as performance evaluation, reliability/availability, energy efficiency, scalability, and sustainability. Specifically, techniques for checking and verifying if and how a distributed system satisfies the requirements, as well as how to properly evaluate non-functional aspects, or how to optimize the overall behavior of the system, are all discussed in the book. The scope has been selected to provide a thorough coverage on issues, models. and techniques relating to validation, evaluation and optimization of distributed systems. The key objective of this book is to help to bridge the gaps between modeling theory and the practice in distributed systems through specific examples.
