Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among emotions, surprise has been extensively studied in psychology. In linguistics, surprise, like other emotions, has mainly been studied through the syntactic patterns involving surprise lexemes. However, little has been done so far to correlate the reaction of surprise investigated in psychological approaches and the effects of surprise on language. This cross-disciplinary volume aims to bridge the gap between emotion, cognition and language by bringing together nine contributions on surprise from different backgrounds – psychology, human-agent interaction, linguistics. Using different methods at different levels of analysis, all contributors concur in defining surprise as a cognitive operation and as a component of emotion rather than as a pure emotion. Surprise results from expectations not being met and is therefore related to epistemicity. Linguistically, there does not exist an unequivocal marker of surprise. Surprise may be either described by surprise lexemes, which are often associated with figurative language, or it may be expressed by grammatical and syntactic constructions. Their home is boring. Their food is plain. Their lives are monotonous. And Mr. and Mrs. Dullard like it that way. But their children—Blanda, Borely, and Little Dud—have other ideas. . . . Never has dullness been so hilarious than in this deadpan, subversive tale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2020 National Outdoor Book Award, Nature and the Environment Snakes inspire extreme reactions. Love or hate these limbless reptiles, almost everyone is fascinated by them. Although snakes are widespread and frequently encountered, they may be more misunderstood than any other group of animals. From giant rattlesnakes to mating dances, there are dozens of myths and misconceptions about snakes. In Secrets of Snakes: The Science beyond the Myths, wildlife biologist David Steen tackles the most frequently asked questions and clears up prevailing myths. In a conversational style with a bit of humor, Steen presents the relevant biology and natural history of snakes, making the latest scientific research accessible to a general audience. When addressing myths about snakes, he explains how researchers use the scientific method to explain which parts of the myth are biologically plausible and which are not. Steen also takes a close look at conventional wisdom and common advice about snakes. For example, people are told they can distinguish coralsnakes from non-venomous mimics by remembering the rhyme, “red on black, friend of Jack, red on yellow, kill a fellow,” but this tip is only relevant to coralsnakes and two mimics living in the southeastern United States, and it does not always work with other species or in other countries. Enhanced by more than 100 stunning color photographs and three original drawings, Secrets of Snakes: The Science beyond the Myths encourages readers to learn about the snakes around them and introduces them to how scientists use the scientific method and critical thinking to learn about the natural world. A heartbreaking case worth revisiting again and again.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review Nate never imagined that he would be attacked by his best friend. For sixteen years, Nate was the perfect son—the product of a no-nonsense upbringing and deep spiritual faith. Then he met Cam, who pushed him to break rules, dream, and accept himself. Conflicted, Nate began to push back. With each push, the boys became more entangled in each others’ worlds...but they also spiraled closer to their breaking points. And now all of it has fallen apart after a fistfight-turned-near-fatal-incident—one that’s left Nate with a stab wound and Cam in jail. Now Nate is being ordered to give a statement, under oath, that will send his best friend to prison. The problem is, the real story of what happened between them isn’t as simple as anyone thinks. With all eyes on him, Nate must make his confessions about what led up to that night with Cam...and in doing so, risk tearing both of their lives apart.

Biffy thought of himself as a sophisticated, yet down to earth cat- about-town. Biffys best friends were Mr Marple, the large ginger tom from two doors down and Robbie the West Highland terrier from across the road. Mr Marple, who was just called Marple by his friends, happened to be owned by two people who were huge Agatha Christie fans. They also had a gold fish called Poirot and a Budgie called Agatha. Robbie was rumoured to be a distant cousin of Greyfriars Bobby, the famous 19th century Edinburgh dog who stayed by his masters grave and was looked after by the local people in recognition of his loyalty. Biffy thought that Robbie had started this rumour himself. Meanwhile, out in space, a small fleet of spaceships from the planet Mars had managed to sneak up and hide behind the moon in preparation for a raid on Earth to steal lots of cheese from a cheese festival in Cheddar, England. During the Martians attempt to land a sudden fault with the rocket motors on board the Martian flagship ship, the Zulupapalulu, forces it to make an emergency landing close to where Biffy and his friends were having their afternoon nap. Investigating the disturbance Biffy and his friends discover that the Martians are Mice and overhear their dastardly plans. After several comic adventures Biffy and his friends manage to steal 3 of the Martian mices hover scooters and find their main landing site. Using his generous for invention, Biffy constructs a make-shift catapult and using bits of cheese as ammunition takes on the mice in a climactic battle and saves the day.
