Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Narrative of the Wesleyan Mission to Jamaica: With Occasional Remarks on the State of Society in That Colony Much of what appears in this Narrative will be new to the generality of British readers, and indeed a con siderable part of it has never been published before in any form whatsoever; but the writer has endeavoured to Obtain the most accurate information on every event he records, and his opportunities for this have been of the most favourable description. It was his lot to be employed as a missionary in Jamaica between eleven and twelve years, and having arrived early in 1821, he became personally acquainted with several who had witnessed the progress of the work from its very com mencement, and with whom he often conversed on almost every point recorded in the earlier periods of the history. But the greater part of the volume is occupied with events which transpired during his own term of residence, or with such as were immediately connected with them. Of those not a few came under his own observation, while the knowledge of others was conveyed by his brethren with whom he was in constant inter course. In addition to these sources of information, he has availed himself of the help afforded by the publica tions of the Wesleyan Missionary Society, as well as. Book excerpt: The Moravian Church became widely known and respected for its 'missions to the heathen', achieving a high reputation among the pious and with government. This study looks at its connections with evangelical networks, and its indirect role in the great debate on the slave trade, as well as the operations of Moravian missionaries in the field. The Moravians' decision, in 1764, to expand and publicise their foreign missions (largely to the British colonies) coincided with the development of relations between their British leaders and evangelicals from various denominations, among whom were those who went on to found, in the last decade of the century, the major societies which were the cornerstone of the modern missionary movement. These men were profoundly influenced by the Moravian Church's apparent progress, unique among Protestants, in making 'real' Christians among the heathen overseas, and this led to the adoption of Moravian missionary methods by the new societies. Dr Mason draws on a wide range of primary documents to demonstrate the influences of the Moravian Church on the missionary awakening in England and its contribution to the movement.

Book excerpt: This book describes the sociocultural context that shaped Christian initiation for many early Jamaican congregants within the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. Christian initiation in early-twentieth-century Jamaican AME churches included the practice of two water rituals for children within most of its congregations—first, the christening or sprinkling of water on infants, and second, immersion when the child reached the age of consent and made a public confession of faith. The ambiguity of John Wesley’s doctrine and practice of the sacrament of baptism are provided with the cultural milieu of nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Jamaica to allow the reader to calmly consider the spectrum of evidence—and consider how the use of two water rituals became normative for many disciples of Christ to become full members within the early AME Church in Jamaica.
