In collating the facts herein set forth it was my privilege to consult the Congressional Library at the libraries of Harvard and Yale universities and the Boston Public Library. I am fully aware that such opportunities should have insured a better book, but I earnestly hope that the motive which prompts me may cause the short comings and imperfections of the work to be forgiven. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the American Negro It is perhaps only when one enters upon such a study as this that he realizes how valuable are the investiga tions of Dr. W. E. B. Dubois in this field. For the earlier years the thesis, The Suppression of the African slave-trade, is really indispensable; and one of the chapters is largely based on the Atlanta Univer sity publication, The Negro Church. In a similar way is another chapter based upon the valuable study by Dr. R. R. Wright, In, entitled self-help in Negro Education. The last chapter is naturally much indebted to my own publication, The Negro in Literature and Art. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I have not undertaken to discuss the many problems Which have arisen through the contact of the Negro with other races, but to tell a simple, straight story Of What the Negro himself has accomplished in the way Of attaining to a higher civilisation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro in the New World In the year 1910, however, I have tried to tell in words as well as pictures the story of the negro IN the new world, as much for my own education as for that of others. For those who are too busy to do more than glance at the pictures, and perhaps read through this preface (which is as much as fifty per cent of modern reviewers are able to accomplish, amid the rain of books in the English language), I will here summarise the conclusions to be deduced from my Opinions and (i think) from my array of evidence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alexander Gifford or Vi'let's Boy: A Story of Negro Life There is more "truth than fiction" in this little book that I am sending out. In writing the story, I have sought to show the real purpose of most educated negroes, just as I have seen it carried out, in their efforts to adjust themselves to their new surroundings. My negro characters are taken from lowly cabin homes, educated in good schools, and become influential agencies among their people. The white characters illustrate three distinct ideas of negro education. The story begins and ends in the South. I have quoted from "Negro Women" and "The Negro Child" by Mrs. S. H. Harris as published in the "Atlanta Constitution" and "The New York Independent," from speeches made at the "Montgomery, Alabama, Race Conference," in 1900, and an address given in Boston by a leading educator. To each of these I am under obligations, also to Roswell Bros., Anniston, Ala. for the use of the illustration "De Ol' Cabin 'ome." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro in Literature and Art: In the United States The present volume undertakes to treat somewhat more thoroughly than has ever before been attempted the achievement of the Negro in the United States along literary and artistic lines, judging this by absolute rather than by partial or limited standards. The work is the result of studies in which I first became interested nearly ten years ago. In 1910 a booklet, "The Negro in Literature and Art," appeared in Atlanta, privately printed. The little work contained only sixty pages. The reception accorded it, however, was even more cordial than I had hoped it might be, and the limited edition was soon exhausted. Its substance, in condensed form, was used in 1913 as the last chapter of "A Short History of the American Negro," brought out by the Macmillan Co. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Romance of the American Negro For a number of years it has been on my mind to write a book regarding the principal events that have occurred to the colored race since the beginning of the agitation against slavery, going on from thence to the great Rebellion, passing through that war, and also dealing with all subjects of great importance that have arrested our attention under our glorious freedom. At the same time it has occurred to me, as it has to many another writer, that my book would be far more interesting to the general reader, if I were to select a representative woman of our own race, and make her the mouthpiece of all I wished to say; in other words, to introduce the whole under the pleasing form of an historical romance, so that we might keep our heroine constantly before our eyes, and make her weave in a continuous tale of love, travel, war and peace, and thus portray the lady playing her own parts on that tremendous stage of Time that has been set forth for the gaze and astonishment of the whole country during the past fifty years. I hope those members of the general public who favor me by a perusal of my book will be pleased with my plan. "Peace hath her victories, no less renowned than war," and I have introduced into my book all the great advances that our race has made since the fall of Richmond, and, indeed, have brought things down to this year. The reader will find a number of things that are intended to introduce humor, and to brighten the darker portions of the story. And as some fault-finding person may say that I have overdrawn my heroine, and made her far more clever than she could ever have naturally been, I venture to affirm that such a charge can by no means be just, for we have women among us, and men, too, who are as intelligent and clever as can be found among any other race on the face of the earth. I believe my book will prove the truth of this assertion in those cases, at least, where the heroines and heroes of the colored race are mentioned in its pages by name. Beulah Jackson will therefore stand as a representative woman among our own people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Boy's Life of Booker T. Washington The single aim in telling the story that follows is to interest boys in the life of Booker T. Washington. This man's life was of such singular and vital importance in the history of his own race and in the history of our country that it ought to be familiar to all the youth of the land, and to the negro youth especially, since it is the greatest inspiration to the latter to be found in the annals of American history. There has been no attempt to be original or exhaustive in the treatment. While a great mass of material has been consulted, it should be frankly stated that the story follows very closely the material found in Washington's 'Up from Slavery and "My Larger Educational' and Scott and Stowe's Booker T. Washington: Builder of a Civilization." The author desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to Doubleday, Page and Company for permission to use extensive quotations from these books. If some boy by reading this book is inspired to higher ambition and encouraged to nobler effort, the author will feel that the book is fully justified.
