Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known for its storybook scenes along the North River, the town of Norwell, Massachusetts, was first incorporated as South Scituate in 1849. Author and local historian Samuel H. Olson chronicles the life and times of this quaint New England community through a collection of articles previously published in the Norwell Mariner. As the shipbuilding industry on the river waned, farmers, shoemakers and summer residents revealed their rugged individualism and their socially progressive beliefs. Discover how the Norwell we know today was knowingly sculpted by the town's forefathers. By rejecting new-fangled ideas such as the railroad and other "big city" ways, Norwell has retained its solitude and rural landscape.

Download or read book Scituate Chronicles written by Ted Clarke and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since John Smith first spied the area in 1614, Scituate has had a long and remarkable history. Positioned on a rocky, ledge-strewn coast, Scituate is famous for its shipwrecks, lighthouses and the moss gathered from its rocks by Irish immigrants. In more recent years, the seacoast town has become known for its valiant fight to withstand ocean storms and their devastating floods. Scituate was home to legendary characters, such as William Cushing, an original justice of the U.S. Supreme Court appointed by President George Washington. The charming South Shore town also attracted the grandiose T.W. Lawson, who built the Dreamworld estate and created the "bad luck" legend of Friday the Thirteenth. With these and other vignettes, author Ted Clarke celebrates the spirit of Scituate history.

Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book is the first devoted to exploring scenic Third Cliff, a magical meeting of land, river, and sea, along with its intriguing residents. It traces the transformation of seacoast Scituate from a colonial town of the 1600s into a summer destination of the 1900s, and the conversion of farmland into summer colonies. It brings the past to life.On a Cliff is the latest book from historian Lyle Nyberg, author of Summer Suffragists (2020). His work is published in the state's database of historic resources, and appeared in magazine and newspaper articles. Member of SHS, MHS, and NEHA, he brings first-hand knowledge to this book as a resident of Third Cliff."This study of a Massachusetts coastal neighborhood is a fascinating account of the emergence of late nineteenth century summer colonies, their growth, and subsequent suburban development. The depth and breadth of Lyle Nyberg's research is astounding. Local residents will appreciate this welcome addition to a neglected period of Scituate history, while scholars will value the author's insights concerning changing land use patterns."-- David T. Dixon, author of Radical Warrior: August Willich's Journey from German Revolutionary to Union General; past Trustee, Scituate Historical Society,On a Cliff "is one of the most impeccably researched works I have read in a long time . . . and it opens repeatedly on much larger issues, such as things that might have been (the canal) to the inventor of kit-built garages and cottages?. I have enjoyed it immensely."-- John R. Stilgoe, Harvard University

Download or read book History of Scituate, Massachusetts written by Samuel Deane and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Scituate, Massachusetts: From Its First Settlement to 1831 The value of Town histories if faithfully compiled, is readily acknowledged, since it is from such sources, that more general histories may acquire accuracy. The reasons for attempting a more perfect and copious history of Scituate, than has hitherto appeared, may be found in the facts, that it was one of the earliest settlements in New England, that it took the lead in population, and bore an important part in the civil and military affairs of Plymouth Colony, that it has produced eminent characters, and furnished colonists for peopling more recent settlements, in many of the States of the Union. The first settlers came in by the way of Plymouth, and some of them were of the first ship's company. There was a large access to the settlement in 1633, which company came by the way of Boston, with Mr. Lothrop, their pastor. Previous to 1640, most of the population was from the County of Kent in England, but about the latter date, many came in from Hingham, Dorchester, Watertown, Weymouth and Nantasket, at which places they had resided a few years: many of these were from London, and more, perhaps, from Dorsetshire. Though emigrations have been constantly making from this early settlement, yet we have noticed some remarkable periods of those emigrations: for example. In 1640, to Barnstable, when nearly half the population departed. In 1650, to York and its vicinity. In 1658, to Barbadoes. In 1670, to Rehoboth and Swansey. In 1690, to Norwich, Con.
