Book excerpt: "From the opening moments in their latest action adventure, when a Coast Guard drug interdiction goes horribly awry, David and Nancy Beckwith have done it again. It's showtime in the Keys after drugs worth $500 million sink to the bottom of the straits and Will and Betsy Black swing into action. By cannily weaving cunning suspense with a setting the authors know deeply well, A Narcotics Conspiracy brings the Florida Keys to breathtaking life, unveiling the true character of a place and a people renowned for mixing great wealth with wild play." —Mark Howell, author of Like a Rolling Stone. In this third adventure Will and Betsy Black, those crime-solving financial whizzes, find themselves curious when Geoffrey Oliver Watson III is found dead on his boat near Key West. Then a 50-foot go-fast cigarette boat nearly rams a Coast Guard cutter, raising more questions. The answer is drug smuggling. Can the husband-and-wife sleuths thwart the local drug lords?

Book excerpt: Major Motion Picture based on Dark Alliance and starring Jeremy Renner, "Kill the Messenger," to be be released in Fall 2014 In August 1996, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb stunned the world with a series of articles in the San Jose Mercury News reporting the results of his year-long investigation into the roots of the crack cocaine epidemic in America, specifically in Los Angeles. The series, titled “Dark Alliance,” revealed that for the better part of a decade, a Bay Area drug ring sold tons of cocaine to Los Angeles street gangs and funneled millions in drug profits to the CIA-backed Nicaraguan Contras. Gary Webb pushed his investigation even further in his book, Dark Alliance: The CIA, The Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion. Drawing from then newly declassified documents, undercover DEA audio and videotapes that had never been publicly released, federal court testimony, and interviews, Webb demonstrates how our government knowingly allowed massive amounts of drugs and money to change hands at the expense of our communities. Webb’s own stranger-than-fiction experience is also woven into the book. His excoriation by the media—not because of any wrongdoing on his part, but by an insidious process of innuendo and suggestion that in effect blamed Webb for the implications of the story—had been all but predicted. Webb was warned off doing a CIA expose by a former Associated Press journalist who lost his job when, years before, he had stumbled onto the germ of the “Dark Alliance” story. And though Internal investigations by both the CIA and the Justice Department eventually vindicated Webb, he had by then been pushed out of the Mercury News and gone to work for the California State Legislature Task Force on Government Oversight. He died in 2004.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a new introduction by the author. The true, absorbing and sometimes frightening documentary of the world's most successful narcotics investigation, The French Connection is one of the most fascinating crime accounts of our time. When New York City detectives Eddie "Popeye" Egan and his partner Sonny Grosso routinely tail Pasquale "Patsy" Fuca, after observing some wild spending at the Copacabana, they quickly realize that they are on to something really big. Patsy is not only the nephew of a mob boss on the lam but also a key negotiator in an impending delivery of narcotics from abroad. His incongruous connections are with several distinguished Frenchmen, including Jean Jehan, the director of the world's largest heroin network, and Jacques Angelvin, a star of French television. For many suspense-filled months, through opulent Manhattan nightclubs, dark tenements in Brooklyn and the Bronx, tree-lined streets of the genteel Upper East Side, and in Paris, Marseilles, and Palermo, the duel is on -- the prize 112 pounds of pure heroin, worth ninety million on the streets. Over three hundred investigators from local, state, federal, and international agencies are ultimately involved in the hours of weary surveillance, the skilled intuition, the luck -- both good and bad -- and the danger.

Book excerpt: Mark Porter, criminal defense lawyer in San Diego, California, is doing so well defending blind mules, those unsuspecting citizens trapped in a an ugly game of unwittingly delivering drugs across the U.S-Mexico border, that he is expanding his business. Jason Spurlock, boxer, surfer, and brand-new attorney, seems like an excellent fit for a new associate. Two weeks after Jason's hire, Mark is on his way for a ten-day trip to Paradise. That's Medellin, Colombia, and Camila Escobar, the love of his life he'd met three years earlier. On the way, Mark drops off his car, a partial payment from a client, for a paint job. No one has a better reputation than the Slim Brothers in Tijuana, Mexico. Upon return from an idyllic vacation, all hell breaks loose when a drug-sniffing dog alerts border guards to cocaine inside Mark's car. In an unbelievable ripped from the headlines adventure, Mark must now fight for justice-for himself. His terminally ill father is determined to help at any cost. Camila has innocently played into the government's hands by sending a gift to the Slim brothers to put as a surprise in the car. But the real surprise is her pregnancy. Now Mark has even more to fight for when he learns of his unborn daughter. Jason Spurlock puts on the gloves in a new arena when he's tossed into the first real case of his career. It's not just any case-it's a career-maker or breaker. Defending his boss was never on his agenda. What is Mark holding back? And trying to work with Mark's best friend, Steven Roberts, an investigator who constantly ridicules him, is like constantly bouncing off the ropes. There's something dirty about this case, though, and Jason is determined to find out what that is, come hell or high water.

Book excerpt: The inside story of a band of entrepreneurial upstarts who made millions selling painkillers—until their scheme unraveled, putting them at the center of a landmark criminal trial. • SOON TO BE THE MAJOR MOTION PICTURE PAIN HUSTLERS STARRING EMILY BLUNT AND CHRIS EVANS "Unfolds with the velocity and verve of a Scorsese film…A tour de force."—Patrick Radden Keefe, New York Times bestselling author of Empire of Pain and Say Nothing John Kapoor had already amassed a small fortune in pharmaceuticals when he founded Insys Therapeutics. It was the early 2000s, a boom time for painkillers, and he developed a novel formulation of fentanyl, the most potent opioid on the market. Kapoor, a brilliant immigrant scientist with relentless business instincts, was eager to make the most of his innovation. He gathered around him an ambitious group of young lieutenants. His head of sales—an unstable and unmanageable leader, but a genius of persuasion—built a team willing to pull every lever to close a sale, going so far as to recruit an exotic dancer ready to scrape her way up. They zeroed in on the eccentric and suspect doctors receptive to their methods. Employees at headquarters did their part by deceiving insurance companies. The drug was a niche product, approved only for cancer patients in dire condition, but the company’s leadership pushed it more widely, and together they turned Insys into a Wall Street sensation. But several insiders reached their breaking point and blew the whistle. They sparked a sprawling investigation that would lead to a dramatic courtroom battle, breaking new ground in the government’s fight to hold the drug industry accountable in the spread of addictive opioids. In The Hard Sell, National Magazine Award–finalist Evan Hughes lays bare the pharma playbook. He draws on unprecedented access to insiders of the Insys saga, from top executives to foot soldiers, from the patients and staff of far-flung clinics to the Boston investigators who treated the case as a drug-trafficking conspiracy, flipping cooperators and closing in on the key players. With colorful characters and true suspense, The Hard Sell offers a bracing look not just at Insys, but at how opioids are sold at the point they first enter the national bloodstream—in the doctor’s office.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug Politics is an enlightening new book by a man who knows this disturbing and dangerous subject. A former United States ambassador to Peru, David C. Jordan has testified before the U.S. Senate and House Foreign Relations committees and has consulted with various government security organizations. His account of government protection of the criminal elements intertwined with local and global politics challenges many of the assumptions of current drug policies. Using examples from South America, Mexico, Russia, and the United States, Jordan shows that the narcotics problem is not merely one of supply and demand. Jordan argues that many national and international financial systems are dependent on cash from money laundering, and some governments are far more involved in protecting than in combating criminal cartels.
