Book excerpt: A multiple facility, multiple product production scheduling problem is considered over a finite planning horizon. The horizon consists of discrete production periods during each of which at most one product can be assigned to each facility. At the end of each production period, the system controller has the option of shutting down any or all of the facilities or continuing to use the facilities on an overtime basis. Product demands are assumed to be constant over a period but not necessarily the same in all periods. All demands must be met without allowing backorders. The problem objective is to determine an assignment of products to the facilities over the horizon which minimizes the sum of straight time and overtime production costs. The problem is formulated as a linear, integer program which in this case can be solved by solving a relaxed version of the problem which can be formulated as a minimal-cost flow problem. However, for an important special case a single pass algorithm is given which is more efficient than the standard flow algorithms. (Author).

Due to this fact notable research contributions to Integer Programming have been made in very different branches of mathematics and its applications. Since these publications are scattered over many journals, proceedings volumes, monographs, and working papers, a comprehensive bibliography of all these sources is a helpful tool even for specialists in this field. I initiated this compilation of literature in 1970 at the Institut fur ~konometrie und Operations Research, University of Bonn. Since then many collaborators have contributed to and worked on it. Among them Dipl.-Math. Claus Kastning has done the bulk of the work. With great perseverance and diligence he has gathered all the material and checked it with the original sources. The main aim was to incorporate rare and not easily accessible sources like Russian journals, preprints or unpublished papers. Without the invaluable and dedicated engagement of Claus Kastning the bibliography would never have reached this final version. For this reason he must be considered its responsible editor. As with any other collection this literature list has a subjective viewpoint and may be in some sense incomplete. We have however tried to be as complete as possible. The bibliography contains 4704 different publications by 6767 authors which were classified by 11839 descriptor entries.

Product demands are assumed to be constant over a period but not necessarily identical in all periods. All demands must be met without allowing backorders. The problem objective is to determine an assignment of products to facilities over the variable length horizon which minimizes the sum of production charges and a general cost term which is a monotonically nondecreasing function of the horizon length. This problem is formulated as a nonlinear, integer program which, realistically, arises in industrial situations where schedulers use repetitive cycle plans such as the well-known economic manufacturing quantity models for controlling production systems. However, the problem can be solved as a minimal-cost flow problem only for a very special case. It is then shown that the general problem can be reformulated as an all integer program which can be solved using any of the very efficient algorithms for finding minimal-cost flows in single commodity networks.
