The author was Hamish Mann, a young Black Watch subaltern killed in France in 1917 just five days after his 21st birthday. Thanks to Manns outstanding literary gifts and prodigious output, this book re-lives his fateful journey from the declaration of war, his voluntary work at a military hospital, his training and commission and, finally, his service with 8th Black Watch on the Somme. The daily hardship and trauma he experienced at the Front were shared with countless thousands of his comrades. But Hamishs extraordinary gift was his ability to record the traumatic events and the range of his emotions, writing often in his dug-out by the light of a guttering candle.A century on, thanks to the Familys discovery and Jacquie Buttrisss sensitive commentary, Hamishs tragically short life can be celebrated and his literary legacy given the recognition it so richly deserves.

Book excerpt: The affair of the planter’s wife running off with her driver had been a burning topic in the High Commission and British clubs, and had even occupied several discreet paragraphs in the Straits Times … It is 1930s Malaya and Valerie Mitchell, desperate to escape an unhappy marriage to Stuart, a rubber planter, a loner and a difficult man, instigates an adulterous affair with her Muslim chauffeur, Osman. Osman is already married to Minah, but he struggles to spurn the advances of his boss’s wife as she offers herself up to him at the plantation bungalow. Valerie then takes the unprecedented step of going to live with Osman, his first wife and his mother in his kampung (village) and she must cope with a way of life, culture and religion that is at considerable variance with her own. Events come to pass that shock both Valerie and the villagers and she soon finds herself spurned by both the Malay society she had hoped to adopt and British colonial society in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, which she has brought shame upon through her scandalous betrayal of British decorum.

Book Synopsis Sniping in the Trenches by : Maj. John L. Plaster USAR (Ret.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of The Ultimate Sniper and The History of Sniping and Sharpshooting, here is the most thorough examination of wartime sniping ever published—not only for World War I, but for any war. It's all here in great detail--the weapons, optics, ammunition, silencers, and numerous wartime improvisations, from disguised periscopes to fake trees, from body armor to fixed and periscope rifles, plus sniping tactics, training, and organization. Here, too, are the people. From the Allied sniping trailblazers—adventurers, big-game hunters, British and American NRA riflemen—who rose up to challenge Germany's snipers to the colorful characters who fought this war within a war: The Igorot headhunter-turned-U.S. Army sniper who hoped to carry German heads back to his village "rizzly" Christie, the Yukon hunter who inspired Canada's snipers The shy French village girl who shot down German snipers The billionaire industrialist who recruited and financed an Allied sniping unit The Eurasian legend who out-sniped the Turks at Gallipoli The Canadian and U.S. Native American snipers the Germans feared the most And, for the first time ever, renowned sniping authority Major John L. Plaster tells the story of Canada's and England's sniper veterans who trained America's snipers at 34 sites all across the United States, readying them for this no-holds-barred contest. Sniping in the Trenches is profusely illustrated with nearly 500 rare photographs from U.S., Canadian, and European museums and archives, many never before published, others unseen for 100 years. Rounding out this amazing compilation are a dozen full-length, firsthand sniping accounts by American, Canadian, British, and Australian snipers.

Book Synopsis Sniper on the Ypres Salient by : Sue Boase
Download or read book Sniper on the Ypres Salient written by Sue Boase and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just after midnight on 22 April 1916 on the Western Front, a sergeant from the 15th (1st London) Royal Welsh Fusiliers came sliding and stumbling along the dark, mud-filled trench towards the four men, huddled together and soaked-through, in the shallow dugout. He was clutching his postbag in which there were four parcels for one of them, William McCrae, whose twentieth birthday fell on this day. A hand-written account by William, my grandfather, was found in my mother’s papers, long after his death. This book describes a year of his time fighting in the First World War, from December 1915 to December 1916. Two months after his birthday, he was marching towards the Somme, where he was to act as a runner during the key Welsh engagement in the Battle of Mametz Wood. Later, he went on to volunteer and train as a sniper. He continued in this role for over a year, becoming a lance corporal in the 38th Divisional Sniping Company while fighting on the Ypres Salient. His words emphasise the key role snipers played in the collecting of intelligence about the enemy, through close observation and careful reporting. His account stops abruptly in mid-sentence, just at the point where he indicates he is about to reveal more to us about ‘a new, interesting part of the line to be manned by us Snipers’. Piecing together clues from his sketches, maps and photos, and this book paints a picture of Williams’ time during the rest of the war. In 1917 he returned to England to train as a temporary officer in the 18th Officer Cadet Battalion at Prior Park, Bath. He came back to the Western Front as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment, where he was seconded to the 1/5 Lancashire Fusiliers until the end of the war. During this time, it is likely that his interest and experience as a sniper continued, with evidence that he may have taught at one of the Sniping Schools set up across France.

Book Synopsis Unsun Valor: A GI's Story of World War II by : Harrison, A. Cleveland
Download or read book Unsun Valor: A GI's Story of World War II written by Harrison, A. Cleveland and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty riveting months in the life of a common infantryman, one among the "citizen soldiers" who took the Allies to victory When drafted into the army in 1943, A. Cleveland Harrison was a reluctant eighteen-year-old Arkansas student sure that he would not make a good soldier. But inside thirty months he manfully bore arms and more. This book is his memoir about becoming a soldier, a common infantryman among the ranks of those who truly won the war. After the Allied victory in 1945, books by and about the major statesmen, generals, and heroes of World War II appeared regularly. Yet millions of American soldiers who helped achieve and secure victory slipped silently into civilian life, trying to forget the war and what they had done. Most remain unsung, for virtually none thought of themselves as exceptional. During the war ordinary soldiers had only done what they believed their country expected. Harrison's firsthand account is the full history of what happened to him in three units from 1943 to 1946, disclosing the sensibilities, the conflicting emotions, and the humor that coalesced within the naive draftee. He details the induction and basic training procedures, his student experiences in Army pre-engineering school, his infantry training and overseas combat, battle wounds and the complete medical pipeline of hospitalization and recovery, the waits in replacement depots, life in the Army of Occupation, and his discharge. Wrenched from college and denied the Army Specialized Training Program's promise of individual choice in assignment, students were thrust into the infantry. Harrison's memoir describes training in the Ninety-fourth Infantry Division in the U.S., their first combat holding action at Lorient, France, and the division's race to join Patton's Third Army, where Harrison's company was decimated and he was wounded while attacking the Siegfried Line. Reassigned to the U.S. Group Control Council, he had a unique opportunity to observe both the highest echelons in military government and the ordinary soldiers as Allied troops occupied Berlin. This veteran's memoir reveals all aspects of military life and sings of those valorous but ordinary soldiers who achieved the victory. A. Cleveland Harrison is an emeritus professor of theatre at Auburn University.

Whether reporting with sober clarity or raw despair, the assembled novelists each found a way to transcend the facts of death and metal, tanks and blood. Many of the writers are concerned with battle, but others dwell on moments of calm, love, and friendship. From revolutionary Russia to Republican Spain; from the trenches of the Western Front to the skies over Korea and the jungles of Vietnam, this is a book filled with heroism and horror, savagery and compassion, and lightning-flashes of anarchic humor. Download or read book Lie in the Dark written by Dan Fesperman and published by Soho Press. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vlado Petric is a homicide investigator in war-torn Sarajevo. When he encounters an unidentified body near “sniper alley,” he realizes that it is the body of Esmir Vitas, chief of the Interior Ministry’s special police, and that Vitas has been killed not by any sniper’s aim but by a bullet fired at almost pointblank range. Searching for the killer in this “city of murderers,” Petric finds himself drawn into a conspiracy, the scope of which goes beyond anything he could possibly have imagined. Lie in the Dark brilliantly renders the fragmented society and underworld of Sarajevo at war—the freelancing gangsters, guilty bystanders, the drop-in foreign correspondents, and the bureaucrats frightened for their jobs and very lives. It weaves through this torn cityscape the alienation and terror of one man’s desperate and deadly pursuit of bad people in an even worse place.
