This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive study takes as its subject a group of melodies copied many times, even within single manuscripts. Professor Randel is therefore able to base his conclusions about the relationship of the manuscript sources to one another on twenty-six separate Spanish manuscripts. He shows that there were actually four distinct traditions associated with these manuscripts instead of two as formerly assumed. By comparing the four traditions, he draws new conclusions about the relative antiquity of the written tradition for these psalm tones, the presence or absence of a modal system in the Mozarabic chant, and the development of the two general types of notation. Download or read book Between Saint James and Erasmus: Studies in Late-Medieval Religious Life – Devotion and Pilgrimage in the Netherlands written by Jan van Herwaarden and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is divided into four sections: late medieval devotion in the Netherlands; medieval Christian pilgrimage; the medieval cult of St. James the Great and Erasmiana. Variety and coherence sound the keynote in the title and the contents of the book. Religious concepts and expressions of religious faith such as pilgrimages and indulgences are representative of late-medieval Christianity. In this book they refer specifically to the medieval cult of St. James the Great, while for Erasmus they were an object of his critical consideration. The whole book can be read in the light of the debate about the tension between an appreciation for outward signs of faith, and the inward experience of religious belief, which Erasmus considered an absolute necessity.

Book Synopsis Theodulf of Orléans: Charlemagne's Spokesman against the Second Council of Nicaea by : Ann Freeman

This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who composed in Charlemagne's name the impressive treatise that repudiates the Acts of the Second Council of Nicaea (but which, in the end, the king prevented for religio-political reasons from circulating in his own day)? This series of essays explores in turn the liturgical background, the Latinity, attitudes towards images and the historical circumstances of the time, including relations between Charlemagne, the pope and Byzantium. Ann Freeman presents solid evidence for identifying Charlemagne's spokesman as Theodulf, a Visigoth and refugee from the Moorish invasions of Spain, and reveals the impressive extent of the learning he brought with him - which lead eventually to his appointment as Bishop of Orléans. The final and most up-to-date summary of the findings concerning Theodulf's authorship was presented in German in the introduction to her new edition of the Opus Caroli regis contra synodum (formerly known as the Libri Carolini); the original English version of this is now published here.

Book Synopsis The European Book in the Twelfth Century by : Erik Kwakkel
Download or read book The European Book in the Twelfth Century written by Erik Kwakkel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'long twelfth century' (1075–1225) was an era of seminal importance in the development of the book in medieval Europe and marked a high point in its construction and decoration. This comprehensive study takes the cultural changes that occurred during the 'twelfth-century Renaissance' as its point of departure to provide an overview of manuscript culture encompassing the whole of Western Europe. Written by senior scholars, chapters are divided into three sections: the technical aspects of making books; the processes and practices of reading and keeping books; and the transmission of texts in the disciplines that saw significant change in the period, including medicine, law, philosophy, liturgy, and theology. Richly illustrated, the volume provides the first in-depth account of book production as a European phenomenon.
