But she refuses to be subjugated or confined to her role as mother of a growing family. Book excerpt: “Charles Cumming has breathed new life into the spy novel.” —Ben Macintyre, bestselling author of A Spy Among Friends Published in the UK as The Man Between In this gripping contemporary thriller, reminiscent of the classic Casablanca, a successful spy novelist is drawn into a real-life espionage plot when he’s ordered to find a mysterious fugitive on the alluring but deadly streets of Morocco. Renowned author Kit Carradine is approached by an MI6 officer with a seemingly straightforward assignment: to track down a mysterious woman hiding somewhere in the exotic, perilous city of Marrakesh. But when Carradine learns the woman is a dangerous fugitive with ties to international terrorism, the glamour of being a spy is soon tainted by fear and betrayal. Lara Bartok is a leading figure in Resurrection, a violent revolutionary movement whose brutal attacks on prominent right-wing public figures have spread hatred and violence across the world. Her disappearance ignites a race between warring intelligence services desperate to find her—at any cost. But as Carradine edges closer to the truth, he finds himself drawn to this brilliant, beautiful, and profoundly complex woman. Caught between increasingly dangerous forces who want Bartok dead, Carradine soon faces an awful choice: to abandon Lara to her fate, or to risk everything trying to save her.
Book Synopsis The Experimental Turn in the Moroccan Novel, 1976-1989 by : Anouar El Younssi
Download or read book The Experimental Turn in the Moroccan Novel, 1976-1989 written by Anouar El Younssi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-12-03 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Experimental Turn in the Moroccan Novel, 1976-1989 examines the trajectory of the Moroccan experimental novel and makes a link between its emergence in the early-mid 1970s and the Arab defeat in the six-day war with Israel in 1967. Drawing on works by Muḥammad Barrādah, ʿAbdullāh al-ʿArwī, Aḥmad al-Madīnī, and others, the book contends that the Moroccan experimental novel reflects an historic turning point and transitional cultural landscape. It further shows that the experimental novel laid the ground for a different vision of literature, an important feature of which was the intent to surpass the traditional realist model as executed by Moroccan novelist ʿAbdulkarīm Ghallāb (1919–2017) and Egyptian Nobel laureate Najīb Maḥfūẓ (1911–2006). This new vision of literature seeks to create new discursive spheres for the treatment of the social and the political. This book will be an important contribution to debates around Moroccan/Arabic/Maghrebi literature, as well as to the field of literary experimentalism more broadly.

Book Synopsis Africa in the Contemporary Spanish Novel, 1990–2010 by : Mahan L. Ellison
Download or read book Africa in the Contemporary Spanish Novel, 1990–2010 written by Mahan L. Ellison and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-08-19 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time period of 1990-2010 marks a significant moment in Spanish literary publishing that emphasized a new focus on Africa and African voices and signaled the beginning of a publishing boom of Hispano-African authors and themes. Africa in the Contemporary Spanish Novel, 1990-2010 analyzes the strategies that Spanish and Hispano-African authors employ when writing about Africa in the contemporary Spanish novel. Focusing on the former Spanish colonial territories of Morocco, Western Sahara, and Equatorial Guinea, Mahan L. Ellison analyzes the post-colonial literary discourse about these regions at the turn of the twenty-first century. Heexamines the new ways of conceptualizing Africa that depart from an Orientalist framework as advanced by novelists such as Lorenzo Silva, Concha López Sarasúa, Ramón Mayrata, and others. Throughout, Ellison also places the novels within their historical context, specifically engaging with the theoretical ideas of Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978), to determine to what extent his analysis of Orientalist discourse still holds value for a study of the Spanish novel of thirty years later.

Book Synopsis Moroccan Folktales by : Jilali El Koudia
Download or read book Moroccan Folktales written by Jilali El Koudia and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on stories he heard as a boy from female relatives, Jilali El Koudia presents a cross section of utterly bewitching narratives. Filled with ghouls and fools, kind magic and wicked, eternal bonds and earthly wishes, these are mesmerizing stories to be savored, studied, or simply treasured. Varied genres include anecdotes, legends, and animal fables, and some tales bear strong resemblance to European counterparts, for example Aamar and his Sister (Hansel and Gretel) and Nunja and the White Dove (Cinderella). All capture the heart of Morroco and the soul of its people. In an enlightening introduction, El Koudia mourns the loss of the teller of tales in the marketplace, and he makes it clear that storytelling, born of memory and oral tradition, could vanish in the face of mass and electronic media.

Download or read book Novel Style written by Ben Masters and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-08 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a time of linguistic plainness. This is the age of the tweet and the internet meme; the soundbite, the status, the slogan. Everything reduced to its most basic components. Stripped back. Pared down. Even in the world of literature, where we might hope to find some linguistic luxury, we are flirting with a recessionary mood. Big books abound, but rhetorical largesse at the level of the sentence is a shrinking economy. There is a prevailing minimalist sensibility in the twenty-first century. Novel Style is driven by the conviction that elaborate writing opens up unique ways of thinking that are endangered when expression is reduced to its leanest possible forms. By re-examining the works of essential English stylists of the late twentieth century (Anthony Burgess, Angela Carter, Martin Amis), as well as a newer generation of twenty-first-century stylists (Zadie Smith, Nicola Barker, David Mitchell), Ben Masters argues for the ethical power of stylistic flamboyance in fiction and demonstrates how being a stylist and an ethicist are one and the same thing. A passionate championing of elaborate writing and close reading, Novel Style illuminates what it means to have style and how style can change us. .

Contemporary World Fiction: A Guide to Literature in Translation provides an overview of the tremendous range and scope of translated world fiction available in English. In so doing, it will help readers get a sense of the vast world beyond North America that is conveyed by fiction titles from dozens of countries and language traditions. Book excerpt: A delightfully idiosyncratic assemblage of stories about encounters with simple people in the most ordinary places made extraordinary by its impasto-like imagery - intense, intimate, and heartfelt. In 1995 the author became the first female student from the Philippines to study in Romania. She spent almost three years at the Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca (Transylvania) and the University of Bucharest. In addition to traveling around Romania extensively during her student days, she also explored as extensively both sides of the Iron Curtain long before the collapse of the communist regimes in Eastern Europe and the then-Soviet Union. After finishing her course in Romania, she ended up in Washington, D.C. where she worked and lived for many years. During those years, travel continued to be an important part of her life personally and professionally. This collection of personal observations from her travels covers both her Romanian and Washington years.
