Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book clearly approaches the "21st century skills-issue" ... Hands-on, reflective, thorough: a definite must-have for students, professionals and HE institutions.′ - Nieke Campagne, Careers/Policy Advisor, Leiden University, The Netherlands Whether you are about to embark on your business degree programme, are already a business student or are a business graduate, this book helps you to develop yourself and your career in ways which will benefit you, your current and future employers and society. Focused on developing study and personal skills to enhance your employability, it provides insights and practical guidance on: Developing a skill set and competencies that will be valued by employers, including team-working, critical thinking, networking, managing emotion and managing technological change Self-profiling through career and life planning, and self-presentation through career communication, volunteering and internships Becoming a global business practitioner, able to anticipate economic and cultural change, understand a diversity of world¬views and the idea of ‘global responsibility’ Becoming a responsible and ethical business practitioner, embodying virtues and values which are increasingly sought after by employers in line with consumer expectations. ′The first thing I really love about Paul Dowson’s hugely comprehensive book is its clarity; he takes complex themes and turns them into accessible learning outcomes. The other thing to love is its humanity – it is insightful and borne of a deep concern about how students transition from higher education to working life and citizenship.′ - Jane Artess, Director of Research, Higher Education Careers Services Unit (HECSU), UK

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book publishing industry is going through a period of profound and turbulent change brought about in part by the digital revolution. What is the role of the book in an age preoccupied with computers and the internet? How has the book publishing industry been transformed by the economic and technological upheavals of recent years, and how is it likely to change in the future? This is the first major study of the book publishing industry in Britain and the United States for more than two decades. Thompson focuses on academic and higher education publishing and analyses the evolution of these sectors from 1980 to the present. He shows that each sector is characterized by its own distinctive ‘logic’ or dynamic of change, and that by reconstructing this logic we can understand the problems, challenges and opportunities faced by publishing firms today. He also shows that the digital revolution has had, and continues to have, a profound impact on the book publishing business, although the real impact of this revolution has little to do with the ebook scenarios imagined by many commentators. Books in the Digital Age will become a standard work on the publishing industry at the beginning of the 21st century. It will be of great interest to students taking courses in the sociology of culture, media and cultural studies, and publishing. It will also be of great value to professionals in the publishing industry, educators and policy makers, and to anyone interested in books and their future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1996, this book charts the philosophical landscape of staff development at a time when the subject of ‘quality’ in university teaching and learning was under examination. Graham Webb considers three main issues in his research. He focuses on what the basis for educational and staff development actually is and looks at the weaknesses of the then current practices, as well as deliberating over the future of informed staff development. This book will be of interest to staff developers of all kinds and more generally, to anyone concerned with education and human development.

Book excerpt: Many educators and policymakers find that deciding on the right staff-development program has become increasingly difficult. This brief, three-part monograph organizes staff-development objectives, models, and program-design features into an understandable, comprehensive framework. Part 1 advises readers on how to weigh a program's objectives. Eight main types of objectives are described--five teacher-centered objectives, a student-centered objective, a curriculum-centered objective, and a school-centered objective. The second part features six major models of staff development. Each model represents a different strategy for accomplishing one or more of the objectives identified in part 1. The models are summarized, their features noted, and the objectives for which they are best suited listed. The primary roles assumed by staff developers vary from model to model. The roles that correspond to the six models are: (1) expert presenter; (2) clinical supervisor; (3) trainer; (4) action-research facilitator; (5) organization-development specialist; and (6) change agent. Specific program characteristics that influence the effectiveness of various staff-development objectives are the focus of part 3. Nineteen features are grouped into three categories: objectives, delivery system, and administration. Pertinent questions and comments designed to facilitate program planning are included in each feature description. Two tables are included. (Contains 71 references.) (LMI)
