This book describes how speech and language difficulties can adversely affect children's learning, in both specialist and mainstream settings. It outlines the main areas of difficulty for pupils, and suggests how teachers can make the curriculum more accessible for such pupils so facilitate learning.Expressive language, receptive language, social use of language and developmental co-ordination difficulties are discussed, as are specific curriculum subjects like English, maths and science. Throughout the book there is a balance of information and practical ideas for supporting these pupils, and a comprehensive selection of suggestions for good practice. Included is a motor skills programme, rhymes for speech production and memory work, and photocopiable dictionary pages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past fifty years, design and branding have become omnipotent in the market and have made their way to other domains as well. Given their potential to divide humans into categories and label their worth and value, design and branding can wield immense but currently unharnessed powers of social change. Groups designed as devalued can be undesigned, redesigned and rebranded to seamlessly and equivalently participate in community, work and civic life. This innovative book argues that disability as a concept and category is created, reified, and segregated through current design and branding that begs for creative change. Transcending models of disability that locate it either as an embodied medical condition or as a socially constructed entity, this book challenges the very existence and usefulness of the category itself. Proposing and illustrating creative and responsible design, DePoy and Gilson include thinking and action strategies that are useful and potent for "undesigning", redesigning, and rebranding to meet the full range of human needs and to enhance full participation in local through global communities. Divided into two parts, the first section presents a critical examination of disability as a designed and branded phenomenon, exploring what exactly is being designed and branded and how. The second part investigates the redesign of disability and provides principles for redesign and rebranding illustrated with examples from high-tech to place-based sustainable strategies. The book provides a unique and contemporary framework for thinking about disability as well as providing relevant design and branding guidance to designers and engineers interested in embodiment issues.

Book excerpt: Few publications have changed the landscape of contemporary psychology more than Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman's landmark work, Stress, Appraisal, and Coping. Its publication in 1984 set the course for years of research on the dynamic processes of psychological stress and coping in human beings. Now more than a quarter-century later, The Oxford Handbook of Stress, Health, and Coping pushes the field even further with a comprehensive overview of the newest and best work in this dynamic subject. Edited by Susan Folkman and comprising chapters by the field's leading scientists, this new volume details the expanded knowledge base that has emerged from extensive research on stress and coping processes over the last several decades. Featuring 22 topic-based chapters -- including two by Folkman -- this volume offers unprecedented coverage of the two primary research topics related to stress and coping: mitigating stress-related harms and sustaining well-being in the face of stress. Both topics are addressed within their relevant contexts, including chronic illness, calamity, bereavement, and social hardship. The Oxford Handbook of Stress, Health, and Coping is an essential reference work for students, practitioners, and researchers across the fields of health psychology, medicine, and palliative care.

Department of Education and published by National Association of College & University Business Office. This book was released on 1981 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compendium of four mini-projects carried out by a special task force of the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) addresses policy and management issues related to providing accessibility to handicapped students in higher education. Topics range from executive policy decisions on compliance with federal accessibility mandates to operational procedures for responding to specific accommodation requests. The compendium is comprised of four sections: Section 1 was developed from a series of site-visit interviews with senior-level decision makers, faculty, staff and handicapped students at six colleges and universities. It contains an overview of accessibility issues and problems that require attention, a discussion of how accessibility considerations can be incorporated into a planning and budgeting process, and a set of guidelines for assessing specific accommodation requests; Section 2 reviews 16 national data bases that describe the handicapped population in the United States and contains summary charts of the characteristics revealed. Section 3 describes the results of a survey that NACUBO mailed to a stratified sample of 944 of its member institutions concerning trends in accessibility expenditures and number and types of handicapped students served; and Section 4 lists adaptive education equipment by impairment (such as hearing or mobility) and then by function (such as writing or speaking). The document contains an index, equipment source list, and lists of information resources and services available to handicapped students. (GLR)
