Book excerpt: Given the nature of fracture in the lower transition region where final fracture by cleavage is preceded by some amount of plastic deformation, it is appropriate to use a combined strength-strain criterion to describe the conditions at fracture. A dislocation- based model for predicting fracture toughness of steels in the transition region has been developed where the primary feature describing the temperature dependence of fracture toughness is a plastic work term of the following form: ?eff=(?m? ̄)f??ZAd?p ̄.D0 where ?eff is the effective plastic work to fracture, d?p is the effective plastic strain increment, ?m/ ̄? is the triaxiality ratio and r0 is the length scale of the critical fracture event typically taken as carbide cracking*(and thus D0 = r0 is the critical carbide radius). The ?ZA term represents the flow stress from the Zerilli-Armstrong constitutive equation for bcc metals. This term introduces a temperature dependency based on dislocation mechanics considerations. Inserting the first equation into the Griffith-Orowan equation for fracture stress leads to the elimination of the carbide radius from the equation, ?f=[?E?eff2(1-?2)r0]1/2 and thus the need for defining a characteristic distance.

Book excerpt: Using the Zerilli-Armstrong (ZA) constitutive model for BCC materials and a combined strength-strain model of fracture, a physics model suitable for predicting the fracture toughness transition behavior of ferritic steels has been developed. The model predicts an exponential dependence of the plastic work on temperature and thus is comparable to the exponential dependence of plastic work predicted by Wallin et al. for the Master Curve. Exploring the limits of applicability of the ZA equation used as the basis for this model provides the information required to firmly establish the limits of material condition applicability of the Master Curve. Calculations based on limited data provide validation of the proposed model. The models ability to predict shifts in transition temperature with irradiation and its application to RP vessel integrity assessment will also be discussed.

Book excerpt: In this paper we trace the development of transition fracture toughness models from the landmark paper of Ritchie, Knott, and Rice in 1973 up through the current day. While such models have become considerably more sophisticated since 1973, none have achieved the goal of blindly predicting fracture toughness data. In this paper we suggest one possible way to obtain such a predictive model.

Book excerpt: A method of analyzing the ductile to brittle transition region of a ferritic steel using a coupled micromechanical model of ductile damage, stable crack growth and cleavage fracture has been developed to improve the definition of upper shelf behavior for actual structures. Ductile damage is modelled using the Gurson model as modified by Tvergaard, along with a specially developed crack growth user element. The probability of cleavage fracture is predicted by post-processing the finite element results using the Beremin model of cleavage fracture. Predictions are made of ductile tearing and cleavage fracture in test specimen and wide plate configurations of A533B steel for a range of temperatures. The coupled model is capable of predicting transition toughness and transition temperature shifts for different levels of structural constraint. An analytically-based definition of the onset of upper shelf temperature (OUST) is the temperature at which the coupled ductile damage/cleavage fracture model predicts a probability of failure by cleavage fracture of 5%. Estimates of the shift in the OUST due to different levels of in-plane crack tip constraint are made using the elastic T-stress as a measure of constraint. There is potential for using the T-stress as a measure of structural constraint in order to determine shifts in transition temperature for materials with degraded toughness.

Book excerpt: The Charpy transition temperature and low temperature fracture toughness of low alloy steels depend on three parameters; the microcleavage strength, the yield strength, and the critical crack tip radius. Microcleavage strength and critical crack tip radius appear to be essentially independent of temperature in low alloy steels. A method was developed for relating the change in transition temperature to the change in Charpy transition temperature, since both of these macroscopic measures of toughness depend on the same microscopic parameters. The method for making these calculations and predictions is described. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model to predict cleavage failure of precracked bodies in the transition region for steels was recently proposed by the author. It is based on the concept that the stress-controlled fracture of a weak link triggers the failure of the entire body. The stress that triggers fracture is predicted by a numerical crack-tip stress analysis. The model uses toughness measured at one condition as input to predict toughness at another. For example, toughness measured at one temperature can be used to predict toughness at another temperature, or toughness measured from one geometry can be used to predict toughness for another geometry.

Book excerpt: A method is described for modelling the stochastic variability of toughness data for ferritic steels in the brittle to ductile transition regime. The present model is based on two ingredients: a weakest link approach using Weibull statistics with a suitable modification to include the effect of ductile tearing, and an accurate expression of the material J-R curve, determined from fractography. The model provides a rationale for the different fracture behaviour of a material over the whole range of temperature, from fully stable J-R behaviour at high temperature down to brittle fracture under LEFM conditions at low temperature.

At elevated temperatures, they behave as ductile materials, while at low temperatures they are brittle. There is an intermediate temperature region where these alloys have a failure mode resulting from the competition between cleavage and ductile mechanisms. This region is known as the ductile-to-brittle transition zone. The characterization of fracture resistance of ferritic steels in the ductile-to-brittle transition region is problematic due to scatter in results, as well as size and temperature dependences. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has standardized the determination of a temperature reference (T0) for the fracture toughness characterization of ferritic steels in this region. This chapter presents the evolution of the statistical treatment of fracture toughness data until the present, including some comments on T0 determination, and some aspects that require a deeper analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis quantifies the relationship between prior plastic strain, fracture toughness (J sub Ic), plane strain fracture strain (epsilon sub fps), and yield strength (Q sub y) of HY-series steels at room temperature. Based upon initial J-integral test results of compact tensile specimens that showed a reduction in the fracture toughness with increasing of prestrain, a correlation has been developed where JIc is directly proportional to epsilon sub fps to the fourth power. Thus, small changes in epsilon sub fps will cause large changes in JIc. Further, it has been found that prestrain reduces epsilon sub fps by an amount equal to the prestrain. The combination of these two correlations provides a very simple method of estimating the fracture toughness subsequent to plastic straining. Scanning electron microscopy was used to measure the crack tip stretch zone width (SZW), which is a good estimate of the crack tip strain prior to fracture. The SZW does decrease with increasing prior plastic strain verifying the decrease in epsilon sub fps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture toughness results are measured in the transition region for an ASTM A471 Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel on two specimen sizes 1T compact tension (CT) and 4T-CT. The results are typical for steels in the transition in that the smaller specimen toughness values are greater than the larger specimen results. Two explanations are given for this behavior. One explanation, based on loss of constraint, suggests that small specimens cannot be used to characterize the toughness of a large structure in the transition region. A second explanation, based on a statistical model, suggests that small specimen results when properly analyzed can be used to characterize the toughness of large structures.
