Me. and Mrs. Hunt reached their new station safely on August 30, 1842, just three years after .the commencement of the mission there by Mr. Cross. Viwa is one of the small islets which rise from the reef on the eastern coast of Na Viti Levu-- Great Fiji. At the time of the missionary's arrival it was of great political importance, and one of the most valuable dependencies of Mbau, the seat of the highest power in the group. It offered great advantages as a mission station, in consequence of its being only two miles from Mbau, where as yet the missionaries had been unable to gain a footing, and because of the frequent visits it received from people belonging to all parts of Fiji. The chief of Viwa, Namosimalua, was, as already stated, a man of great note. For some years he had been prominent in every conspiracy by which Mbau was troubled, and every war by which its greatness had been increased. In all these scenes Namosimalua distinguished himself by his craftiness in council and stratagem, while his fame as a warrior was deemed bloody and savage even in Fiji. This man had renounced heathenism and professed to be a Christian. It is too true that he never was really a Christian, yet he kept to his profession of it in the face of the displeasure and threats .of the powerful king of Mbau. In addition to this, he befriended the missionaries, while...

Book excerpt: 'Few books are more inspiring to the Christian reader than a compelling missionary biography. This book is no exception. Paul Schlehlein has given us a heart-moving, soul-stirring survey of the life and labours of the famed missionary to the flesh-eating cannibals of the South Sea Islands, John G. Paton. Paton's zeal for reaching this remote people group with the good news of the gospel will both encourage and motivate you in your own Christian walk. These pages will challenge your commitment to Jesus Christ and intensify your zeal to live for the glory of God. You simply must read this book and, by God's grace, learn the lessons Paton's extraordinary life sets forth.' STEVEN J. LAWSON

Book excerpt: From Cannibals to Christ-Followers--A True Story In 1962, Don and Carol Richardson risked their lives to share the gospel with the Sawi people of New Guinea. Peace Child tells their unforgettable story of living among these headhunters and cannibals, who valued treachery through fattening victims with friendship before the slaughter. God gave Don and Carol the key to the Sawi hearts via a redemptive analogy from their own mythology. The "peace child" became the secret to unlocking a value system that had existed through generations. This analogy became a stepping-stone by which the gospel came into the Sawi culture and started both a spiritual and a social revolution from within. With an epilogue updating how the gospel has impacted the Sawi people, this missionary classic will inspire a new generation of readers who need to hear this remarkable story and the lessons it teaches us about communicating Christ in a meaningful way to those around us.

Book excerpt: While our work is intended specially as a life of Dr. Geddie, we have thought it proper to make it, at the same time, a history of the New Hebrides Mission. For several years his life was the history of the Mission, and, during the rest of the time that he labored on the field, the two were so mixed that it is impossible to write the one without, to some extent, giving the other. It will be seen that our story is told very much in Dr. G.'s own words. - Preface.
