Download or read book The Mingled Measure written by Martin Dec Haynes F.R.C.S and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mingled Measure by Dr. Martin DeC Haynes F.R.C.S. is an outstanding book-length collection of rhythmical and rhyming poems in the style of Coleridge, Alan Poe, Oscar Wilde and Edward Fitzgerald. Some are long and some are short. The collection starts off with the details of the author's experiences while growing up as a young boy in the island of Barbados, and living a rather Spartan existence. Included are poems about his religious teachers, about the game of cricket, the lifestyle of a few psychotic fogies who form part of his extended family. Then the theme shifts to offbeat and peculiar medical sagas both north and south. Then there is social commentary about the Caribbean, most significantly about a down and out chap who lives in a cemetery, and another who loses his job for the unauthorized use of a public transport bus during the 1990 coup d'etat in Trinidad. As a blast for the last, the collection finishes off with the incredible sixteenth century story of a Prince in Mantua, Italy, and his marriage which remained unconsummated. The points of reference were a three stage attestation of the Prince's ability to achieve erectio, penetratio and ejaculatio. The author first heard the story from Mr. M. Smart who picked it up while on holiday in Mantua but then he got further information from Peyrefitte's book La Nature Du Prince.
Download or read book Kubla Khan written by Samuel Coleridge and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though left uncompleted, “Kubla Khan” is one of the most famous examples of Romantic era poetry. In it, Samuel Coleridge provides a stunning and detailed example of the power of the poet’s imagination through his whimsical description of Xanadu, the capital city of Kublai Khan’s empire. Samuel Coleridge penned “Kubla Khan” after waking up from an opium-induced dream in which he experienced and imagined the realities of the great Mongol ruler’s capital city. Coleridge began writing what he remembered of his dream immediately upon waking from it, and intended to write two to three hundred lines. However, Coleridge was interrupted soon after and, his memory of the dream dimming, was ultimately unable to complete the poem. And much of the material presented here was used in that course. The title should serve well to convey the gist of these various pieces. For all of them are explicitly concerned with the attempt to define and track down the implications of the term "symbolic action," and to show how the marvels of literature and language look when considered form that point of view. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact.
