Book excerpt: A method is developed for calculating the growth of a turbulent boundary layer at hypersonic Mach numbers. Excellent agreement with experimental results from axisymmetric nozzles has been obtained by the application of this method. The method utilizes a modification of Stewartson's transformation to simplify the integration of the momentum equation. Heat transfer is taken into account by evaluating the gas properties at Eckert's reference temperature and by using a modification of Crocco's quadratic for the temperature distribution in the boundary layer. A new empirical relation is used for the incompressible friction coefficient which agrees with experimental data over a Reynold's number range from 10(superscript 5) to 10(superscript 9).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the structure and integrated properties of turbulent boundary layers at hypersonic speeds. These properties were deduced from pitot pressure and total temperature surveys made through the boundary layer at various locations on the wall of both a contoured and a conical nozzle. Tests were conducted at average Mach numbers of 11.89 and 10.83 respectively. The corresponding momentum Reynolds numbers ranged from 650 to approximately 1330. The data were obtained in the presence of both a favorable pressure gradient and heat transfer. The results indicate that the density distribution, the static temperature distribution, and the total enthalpy ratio versus the velocity ratio profiles through the boundary layer do not agree with the Crocco theory. The data also indicate that the sublayer is very thick and is approximately 25% as thick as the boundary layer itself. Depending upon the momentum Reynolds number, the sublayer can be either fully subsonic or partially subsonic and partially supersonic in nature. In addition, the transformed velocity profile data and the law of the wall in its incompressible form do not agree. Finally, the skin friction coefficient obtained from the Baronti-Libby transformation and Coles' law of corresponding stations is about 15% to 35% greater than that calculated using the Spalding-Chi semi-empirical technique. Book excerpt: An investigation was carried out to assess the accuracy of a transitional boundary layer theory in the low hypersonic Mach number regime. The theory is based upon the simultaneous numerical solution of the boundary layer partial differential equations for the mean motion and an integral form of the turbulence kinetic energy equation which controls the magnitude and development of the Reynolds stress. Comparisions with experimental data show the theory is capable of accurately predicting heat transfer and velocity profiles through the transitional regime and correctly predicts the effects of Mach number and wall cooling on transition Reynolds number. The procedure shows promise of predicting the initiation of transition for given free stream disturbance levels. The effects on transition predictions of the pressure dilitation term and of direct absorption of acoustic energy by the boundary layer were evaluated.

Book excerpt: This report describes the results of analytical, numerical, and experimental investigations of incompressible and compressible boundary layers. The subjects considered are (1) Laminar and/or turbulent numerical boundary-layer calculations in which the Reynolds stress is related to the turbulent kinetic energy; (2) an analytical investigation of turbulence near a wall which is not founded on classical mixing-length theory; (3) analytical solutions for relating velocity and temperature throughout turbulent boundary layers for nonunity Prandtl numbers; (4) a description of the data reduction of pitot pressure measurements utilizing these analytical results, and (5) the application of the numerical and analytical results to the analysis of turbulent boundary-layer measurements made in the Propulsion Wind Tunnel Facility (PWT).

Book excerpt: An analytical approach toward numerical calculation of the three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer on a sharp cone at incidence under supersonic and hypersonic flow conditions is presented. The theoretical model is based on implicit finite-difference integration of the governing three-dimensional turbulent boundary-layer equations in conjunction with a three-dimensional scalar eddy-viscosity model of turbulence. Comparison is made of present theory with detailed experimental measurements of the three-dimensional turbulent boundary-layer structure (velocity and temperature profiles), the surface streamline direction (obtained via an oil-flow technique) and surface heat-transfer rate.

Book excerpt: A numerical method for solving the equations for laminar, transitional, and turbulent compressible boundary layers for either planar or axisymmetric flows is presented. The fully developed turbulent region is treated by replacing the Reynolds stress terms with an eddy viscosity model. The mean properties of the transitional boundary layer are calculated by multiplying the eddy viscosity by an intermittency function based on the statistical production and growth of the turbulent spots. A specifiable turbulent Prandtl number relates the turbulent flux of heat to the eddy viscosity. A three-point implicit finite-difference scheme is used to solve the system of equations. The momentum and energy equations are solved simultaneously without iteration. Numerous test cases are compared with experimental data for supersonic and hypersonic flows; these cases include flows with both favorable and mildly unfavorable pressure gradient histories, mass flux at the wall, and traverse curvature.

Book excerpt: The excellent agreement between measured boundary layer thickness and thickness calculated by Sivells and Payne recommends their method for calculating turbulent boundary layer growth in axisymmetric hypersonic nozzles. It was thought worthwhile to adapt their approach to the laminar boundary layer. This analysis, along with a limited amount of corroborating data, is presented herein.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hypersonic-wind-tunnel nozzle concept which incorporates a hot-core flow surrounded by an annular flow of cold air offers a promising technique for maximizing the model size while minimizing the power required to heat the test core. This capability becomes especially important when providing the true-temperature duplication needed for hypersonic propulsion testing. Several two-dimensional wind-tunnel nozzle configurations that are designed according to this concept are analyzed by using recently developed analytical techniques for prediction of the boundary-layer growth and the mixing between the hot and cold coaxial supersonic airflows. The analyses indicate that introduction of the cold annular flow near the throat results in an unacceptable test core for the nozzle size and stagnation conditions considered because of both mixing and condensation effects. Use of a half-nozzle with a ramp on the flat portion does not appear promising because of the thick boundary layer associated with the extra length. However, the analyses indicate that if the cold annular flow is introduced at the exit of a full two-dimensional nozzle, an acceptable test core will be produced. Predictions of the mixing between the hot and cold supersonic streams for this configuration show that mixing effects from the cold flow do not appreciably penetrate into the hot core for the large downstream distances of interest.

Book excerpt: In 1975 the U.S. Air Force and the Federal Republic of Germany signed a Data Exchange Agreement numbered AF-75-G-7440 entitled 'Viscous and Interacting Flow Fields.' The purpose was to exchange data in the area of boundary layer research. It includes both experimental and theoretical boundary layer research at speeds from subsonic to hypersonic Mach numbers in the presence of laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layers. The main effort in recent years has been on turbulent boundary layers, both attached and separated in the presence of such parameters as pressure gradients, wall temperature, surface roughness, etc. In the United States the research was conducted in various Department of Defense, NASA, aircraft corporations, and various university laboratories. In the Federal Republic of Germany it was carried out within the various DFVLR, industrial, and university research centers.
