Book excerpt: Recommended Methods for Purification of Solvents and Tests for Impurities is a compilation of recommended procedures for purification of solvents and tests for solvent impurities. Ten solvents are covered: acetonitrile, sulfolane, propylene carbonate, dimethyl sulfoxide, dimethylformamide, hexamethylphosphoramide, pyridine, ethylenediamine, N-methylacetamide, and N-methylpropionamide. This book is comprised of 12 chapters and opens with an introduction to general aspects of impurity effects. The rationale for the selection of solvent is explained, and the relative reactivities of solutes in different solvents are described. The following chapters deal with dipolar aprotic solvents (acetonitrile, sulfolane, propylene carbonate, dimethyl sulfoxide, dimethylformamide, hexamethylphosphoramide, and pyridine) for which impurity effects can be particularly severe, along with their general properties (freezing and boiling temperatures, density, dynamic viscosity, refractive index, dipole moment, relative permittivity, etc.) and the typical chronology of improvements in purification procedures and tests for purity. The final three chapters focus on amphiprotic solvents (ethylenediamine, N-methylacetamide, and N-methylpropionamide). This monograph will be a useful resource for chemists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ion Exchange Technology serves both as a reference and as a text book for technologists and engineers. While the present book is based mainly on ion exchange as practiced in the United States, the object was to produce a generally useful book which would deal with the fundamental problems, techniques, and operations of ion exchange such as mass transfer, equipment design, properties of ion exchange resins, and deionization. Also include are chapters on two types of applications—those that are used industrially on a large scale, and those which have not yet reached large-scale use but have impressive potentialities. In both the fundamental and applied chapters it was deemed necessary that the successful aspects of ion exchange operation be included. In addition, it was equally important to describe the problems and the inherent complexities encountered in the setting up of an ion exchange process. Wherever possible the economic factors were described realistically.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solvent extraction, with tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) as the solvent and nitric acid as the saltine agent, has been utilized as an efficient method for the separation of uranium and plutonium from fission products. A solution of TBP in refined kerosene extracts uranium (VI) and plutonium (IV) from a nitric acid solution of irradiated uranium, leaving the bulk of the fission products in the aqueous phase. The organic phase is then treated successively with fresh nitric acid to remove fission products, with ferrous sulfamate in nitric acid to recover the plutonium which has been reduced to plutonium (III), and finally with water to recover the uranium. At this point the uranium and plutonium have been quantitatively separated from one another. Further decontamination from fission products may be achieved in a second cycle of solvent extraction if required.

Book excerpt: The Savannah River Plant (SRP), operated by E.I. du Pont de Nemours Co. for the United States Department of Energy, has successfully recovered plutonium from plutonium-aluminum alloy processed through the F-Canyon Separations facility. The alloy, produced at the Rocky Flats Plant, results from recovery of plutonium residues from spent chloride salts from pyrochemical processing. The alloy, termed scrub alloy'' or Rocky Flats scrub alloy'' (RFSA), contains up to 15 weight percent chloride impurity prior to mercuric ion catalyzed dissolution with fluoride-containing nitric acid. Solutions containing 850 to 3000 [mu]g/mL (parts per million) of chloride result. During subsequent Purex solvent extraction of this solution with 30% tri-n-butyl phosphate in normal paraffin diluent, chloride is rejected to the aqueous waste stream. This stream is eventually evaporated for waste treatment and acid recovery. Chloride concentrations in the product streams, subject to further processing, must be less than 100 [mu]g/mL to prevent excessive corrosion of equipment. This paper describes scrub alloy production at RFP, its dissolution and head end treatment to remove chloride, chloride values in subsequent processing streams including environmental discharges, and the turbidimetric analysis technique. 2 tabs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nuclear fuel cycle is characterised by the wide range of scientific disciplines and technologies it employs. The development of ever more integrated processes across the many stages of the nuclear fuel cycle therefore confronts plant manufacturers and operators with formidable challenges. Nuclear fuel cycle science and engineering describes both the key features of the complete nuclear fuel cycle and the wealth of recent research in this important field. Part one provides an introduction to the nuclear fuel cycle. Radiological protection, security and public acceptance of nuclear technology are considered, along with the economics of nuclear power. Part two goes on to explore materials mining, enrichment, fuel element design and fabrication for the uranium and thorium nuclear fuel cycle. The impact of nuclear reactor design and operation on fuel element irradiation is the focus of part three, including water and gas-cooled reactors, along with CANDU and Generation IV designs. Finally, part four reviews spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Nuclear fuel cycle science and engineering provides an important review for all those involved in the design, fabrication, use and disposal of nuclear fuels as well as regulatory bodies and researchers in this field. Provides a comprehensive and holistic review of the complete nuclear fuel cycle Reviews the issues presented by the nuclear fuel cycle, including radiological protection and security, public acceptance and economic analysis Discusses issues at the front-end of the fuel cycle, including uranium and thorium mining, enrichment and fuel design and fabrication
