Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Memoir on the History and Physical Geography of Minnesota Volney appears to have been the first observer to notice the prevalence of a valley current, from the tropical lati tudes up the Mississippi - a remark in which he is sustained, at later dates, by Dr drake and Dr. Hildreth. It is evident, from the scanty materials we possess, that this gulf current does not Spend its force until it has well nigh reached the southern terminus of the Itasca summit. It is certain that the extreme upper Mississippi escapes those icy winds from Hudson's and Batfin's bays, which are often felt, during the Spring months, in northern Michigan and north ern Wisconsin. The same latitudes which cross the lake country, give a milder climate in the valley of the upper Mississippi. One of the causes of this phenomenon has probably been noticed above. Others will doubtless be found by a scientific scrutiny of its meteorology. Mr. Epsy will enlighten us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dodge's Geography of Minnesota: Part I, Minnesota as a Whole; Part II, the Growth and Development of Cities; Part III, Statistics and Aids to Teachers In a text-book Of geography we study the relation Of one state or group of states to the whole country of which our home region is a part, and our commercial relations to the-world as a whole. It follows that in such a treatment the characteristics that distinguish our own home regions must largely be lost to sight in the consideration of the great features that distinguish the country as a whole. In a special text-book devoted to one state or group of states we can learn more about our own region, its important surface features, its climate, the occupations of its people, it; products, its local commerce, its history, its chief cities, and many other features of great interest to us. Hence we need to make a special study of our home locality after we have studied the larger region of which it is an important part. A local geography is not only valuable for study in school that we may know well the region about us, but it is valuable also as a reference volume to which we can refer for facts about our own state in our homes whenever in our reading or conversation some question arises concerning our own state which needs to be answered at once. In this text-book the surface features, the climate, the soil and other natural resources which determine the occupations of the people are studied first because they are the large features which determine the distribution and success of industries. One of the great lessons the student learns in geography is Man's absolute dependence upon Nature for his existence. In this state, as in other regions, topography and climate pointed out the path of development that communities must follow in order to make sure their existence within its borders. In the pages that follow, the student finds traced the fundamental conditions that have moulded the life of the state. After these come the historical events that are landmarks in its growth, and then the study of the industrial and commercial features is taken up. To these, which explain the reasons for the development and growth of the larger cities, and which show us why our own region is important to the country as a whole, careful attention has been given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Minnesota, Vol. 4 of 4 The introduction to the first volume of this work an nounced that a general bibliography would be included in the final volume. On further consideration, however, in view of the inclusion of complete bibliographical information with the first reference in each volume to each work cited, it seemed that the principal object of such a bibliography would be achieved by listing the works in the consolidated index, printed in this volume, with references to the first citations. Undoubtedly a systematic bibliography of Minnesota his tory would be very useful, but there is no special reason why it should be included in this work. All manuscripts and newspapers cited, unless otherwise indicated, will be found in the collections of the Minnesota Historical Society. These include, in the Folwell Papers turned over to the society by the author and his family, correspondence and records of interviews with many persons who possessed first-hand in formation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Early Days of Minnesota The presence of faribault being required at his trading post on the Cannon river, he departed in company with two young Indians, leaving me alone with the two hired men. I made it a practice to hunt with the Indians every day, except on Sunday, when I remained in my lodge. The Dakota mode of hunting deer is to form an extended line with intervals of eighty or a hundred yards between the hunters, and then ad vance at a rapid pace, completely scouring the country on their way. Any one falling in the rear has but a poor Chance for success. When an animal is killed, the carcass remains on the spot until the return of the owner, after the conclusion of the day's hunt. The skin is then taken off, and with a portion of the hind quarters, is the property of the man who shot the deer or elk, and the remainder is equitably divided among such as have been less successful, or to the widows and orphan children in the camp. The rule is, that while there is any food on hand, it must be distributed to all alike. There was a great abundance of game in the country where we were encamped, so that from twenty to thirty deer were an average day's hunt besides the elk, bear, and other animals killed with fire arms, and beaver and otter taken with traps by the men who were past the age when they could endure the exhausting exercise of deer hunting. I left the camp at an early hour one day to still hunt in a direction different from that to be taken by the Indians. I was successful, and returned to my lodge bearing upon my shoulders the greater part of a young buck. I soon ascertained that there was quite a commotion in the camp. One of the women came to inform me that all the men except five old fellows, who could not travel, had gone down to the forks of the Red Cedar, more262 minnesota historical collections. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Minnesota Valley, Including the Explorers and Pioneers of Minnesota, And, History of the Sioux Massacre We live not alone in the present, but also in. The past and future. We can never look out thoughtfully at our own immediate surroundings but a course of reasoning will start up, leading us to inquire into the causes that produced the development around us, and at the same time we are led to conjecture the results to follow causes now in operation. We are thus linked indissolubly with the past and the future. If, then, the past is not simply a stepping-stone to the future, but a part of our very selves, we can not afford to ignore, or separate it from ourselves as a member might be lopped off from our bodies; for though the body thus maimed, might perform many and per haps most of its functions, still it could never again be called complete. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of the Early Life and Development of Minnesota When I told him that I would like a position to teach mathe maties, it struck him more than favorably, as he said that that was his line of work, and that it did not give him any time to run the university and he wanted some one to handle the classes. We went around with his horse and buggy among the members Of the Board, and I found that the general scare which everywhere existed made them hesitate about making any arrangements for the future running of the school, not knowing whether or not it would ever open again. The presi dent, whose name I have forgotten, said that when school would open again, which he hoped would be in the fall, he felt quite certain that I would be offered a position as assistant teacher in mathematics. A majority of the board were really in favor of engaging me, and the other members were not op posed, excepting only their apprehension as to future pros peets of the university in such calamitous times. This came to pass in the fall, when I was on the government surveys in the northern part of Minnesota and could not accept. If this open ing had occurred or had been decided upon before I came to this state, it would without doubt have changed the course of my whole life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minnesota and the Far West AT a time when the greatest Powers of Europe have combined to resist barbarian aggression, and public interest is concentrated upon the East, the rapid advance of civilisation in the West possesses claims upon our notice which are in danger of being overlooked. I have therefore ventured to direct attention to the revolution which is now being effected in the physical and moral condition of a great country, and which is likely to be attended with results scarcely less important to the interests of humanity, than those that are expected to follow from the war in which we are now engaged - where the ploughshare, and not the sword, is used as the precursor of civilisation.
