Book excerpt: The Newtonian constant of gravitation, G (often referred to as "big G"), is one of the most important of the universal fundamental physical constants. However, its value is the least well-determined of all such constants. This is because G is very difficult to measure reliably. Even though the gravitational force is responsible for star and galaxy formation on the massive scale of the universe, the force itself is minuscule on the tiny scale of the laboratory masses which must be used in the measurement. Consequently, its experimental value is prone to a high degree of inaccuracy. Moreover, it is the viewpoint of most physicists that G is not related to the other fundamental physical constants by any theory or understanding that is currently available. Therefore, it is thought that the value of G can only be obtained by measurement, and not from evaluating it in terms of other fundamental constants whose values are known with much greater precision and accuracy. The work presented in the book is an attempt to break through this mental barrier by demonstrating through numerical analysis that G is definitely related to the other fundamental constants. Consequently, it is possible to propose an exact value for G (to nine significant figures) that is obtainable from evaluation instead of from measurement.

Book excerpt: A new approach is described and discussed to the determination of the Newtonian gravitational constant G, which is based on the very powerful measurement of the frequency difference between two similar oscillators. The rate of change of time delay between the two is equal to their relative frequency difference, and small variations of either one can then be detected via delay monitoring with resolution limited only by time resolution and frequency stability of the two oscillators. The latter should be highly sensitive to gravitational field, to measure G, which triggers the choice of simple pendulums as field detectors. Since the relative effect on frequency readily obtainable in the lab by well-controlled variations of the gravitational field is on the order of 10−7, stabilities on the order of 10−12 are needed of the relative frequency difference if measurement of the fifth decimal digit of G is the target of the experiment. It is argued that such high stability is possible with a pendulum properly designed for being locally isochronous and showing an adequately high Q factor. The latter is projected to reach possibly 107 or more with the discussed design.

Book excerpt: Since atom interferometers were first realized about 20 years ago, atom interferometry has had many applications in basic and applied science, and has been used to measure gravity acceleration, rotations and fundamental physical quantities with unprecedented precision. Future applications range from tests of general relativity to the development of next-generation inertial navigation systems. This book presents the lectures and notes from the Enrico Fermi school "Atom Interferometry", held in Varenna, Italy, in July 2013. The aim of the school was to cover basic experimental and theoretical aspects and to provide an updated review of current activities in the field as well as main achievements, open issues and future prospects. Topics covered include theoretical background and experimental schemes for atom interferometry; ultracold atoms and atom optics; comparison of atom, light, electron and neutron interferometers and their applications; high precision measurements with atom interferometry and their application to tests of fundamental physics, gravitation, inertial measurements and geophysics; measurement of fundamental constants; interferometry with quantum degenerate gases; matter wave interferometry beyond classical limits; large area interferometers; atom interferometry on chips; and interferometry with molecules. The book will be a valuable source of reference for students, newcomers and experts in the field of atom interferometry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of gravity provides a natural phenomenon that is simultaneously obvious and obscure; we all know what it is, but rarely question why it is. The simple observation that 'what goes up must come down' contrasts starkly with our current scientific explanation of gravity, which involves challenging and sometimes counterintuitive concepts. With such extremes between the plain and the perplexing, gravity forces a sharp focus on scientific method. Following the history of gravity from Aristotle to Einstein, this clear account highlights the logic of scientific method for non-specialists. Successive theories of gravity and the evidence for each are presented clearly and rationally, focusing on the fundamental ideas behind them. Using only high-school level algebra and geometry, the author emphasizes what the equations mean rather than how they are derived, making this accessible for all those curious about gravity and how science really works.

Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date account of the precise experiments that can be performed in a terrestrial laboratory and are used to explore the nature of universal gravitation. The experiments required are at the limits of sensitivity of mechanical measurements. The problems of experiment design are discussed, and critical accounts given of the principal experiments testing the inverse square law and the principle of equivalence, and measuring the constant of gravitation. An analysis of the effects of noise and other disturbances is also provided, further highlighting the care that is needed in experimental design and performance. The motivation for undertaking such experiments is also discussed.

Book excerpt: A history of the attempts to test the predictions of Newtonian Gravity, describing in detail recent experimental efforts to verify both the inverse-square law and the Equivalence Principle. Interest in these questions has increased in recent years, as it has become recognised that deviations from Newtonian gravity could be a signal for a new fundamental force in nature. This is the first book devoted entirely to this subject, and will thus be useful to both graduate students and researchers interested in this field. It describes the ideas that underlie searches for such deviations, focusing on macroscopic tests. A comprehensive bibliography of some 450 entries supplements the text.
