Book excerpt: This document presents a data system for maintaining and processing data on hazardous substances in the marine environment. It is the 2nd in a three-volume report which describes a medical monitoring program for marine personnel who may be potentially exposed to hazardous chemicals during their work. A rationale for ranking marine hazardous substances is described and a comprehensive listing of marine hazardous substances, grouped by hazard priority classification is presented. Twenty-two types of information or characteristic data for the hazardous substances are maintained and output can be structured to present data for specified subsets of substances and/or subsets of data types. Types of data maintained in this system include: chemical name; Chemical Hazards Response Information System (CHRIS)Code, time weighted average threshold limit value. short term exposure limit, immediately dangerous to life or health concentration, odor threshold, respiratory hazard index, toxicity priority class code, carcinogenicity reference per ACGIH, NFPA health hazard classification and NAS health hazard rating, Chemical Abstracts Service registry number, DOT emergency response guide number, availability of NIOSH/OHSA occupational health guidelines for chemical hazards, availability of biological monitoring methods, and availability of detector tube. Keywords: Chemical Information systems, Medical computer application, Hazard rating, Chemical data, Health data, and Ocean environments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is Volume I of a three-volume report which describes the development of a medical monitoring program for marine personnel who may be potentially exposed to hazardous chemicals during their work. The purpose of the program is to screen for adverse health effects of occupational exposures to noise and toxic chemical substances. A basic medical protocol for periodic screening examinations and a target organ protocol for examinations performed in response to acute overexposure to specific toxic substances are described. A recommended schedule for medical examinations is specified and guidelines for follow ups of abnormal laboratory results are provided. Auxiliary systems to support implementation and application for the medical monitoring system include: 1) A hazardous substance data system for nearly 700 marine hazardous substances, 2) A set of biochemical and medical data sheets for 179 of the more toxic marine hazardous substances, 3) Guidelines for biological monitoring of exposures to 26 marine hazardous substances for which methods are available, 4) Two methods for documentation of potential exposures to marine hazardous chemicals: one which is self-documented, and a second, which employs an indirect method based on cargo manifests and personnel records 5) Guidelines for an industrial hygiene program to complement medical monitoring, and 6) A data management system to provide a record of data and to provide a means of rapid access to data files for specific information and for data summaries.

Does the identification number 1035 indicate ethane or butane? What is the difference between natural gas transmission pipelines and natural gas distribution pipelines? If you came upon an overturned truck on the highway that was leaking, would you be able to identify if it was hazardous and know what steps to take? Questions like these and more are answered in the Emergency Response Guidebook. Learn how to identify symbols for and vehicles carrying toxic, flammable, explosive, radioactive, or otherwise harmful substances and how to respond once an incident involving those substances has been identified. Always be prepared in situations that are unfamiliar and dangerous and know how to rectify them. Keeping this guide around at all times will ensure that, if you were to come upon a transportation situation involving hazardous substances or dangerous goods, you will be able to help keep others and yourself out of danger. With color-coded pages for quick and easy reference, this is the official manual used by first responders in the United States and Canada for transportation incidents involving dangerous goods or hazardous materials.

This book was released on 2000-09-23 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large number of chemicals are used on land at shore facilities, in the air in combat and reconnaissance aircraft, on seas around the world in surface vessels, and in submarine vessels by the navy and marine corps. Although the chemicals used are for the large part harmless, there is a significant amount of chemicals in use that can be health hazards during specific exposure circumstances. The Navy Environmental Health Center (NEHC) is primarily tasked with assessing these hazards. The NEHC completes its tasks by reviewing toxicological and related data and preparing health-hazard assessments (HHAs) for the different chemicals. Since the NEHC is continually asked to develop these HHAs, the National Research Council (NRC) was asked to assess independently the validity and effectiveness of NEHC's HHA process, in order to determine whether the process as implemented provides the Navy with the best, comprehensive, and defensible evaluations of health hazards and to identify any elements that might require improvement. The task was assigned to the Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology's Committee on Toxicology's (COT's) Subcommittee on Toxicological hazard and Risk Assessment. Review of the U.S. Navy Environmental Health Center's Health-Hazard Assessment Process presents the subcommittee's report. The report is the work of expertise in general toxicology, inhalation toxicology, epidemiology, neurotoxicology, immunotoxicology, reproductive and developmental toxicology, pharmacology, medicine, risk assessment, and biostatistics. It is based on its review of documents provided by NEHC, presentations by NEHC personnel, and site visits to NEHC in Norfolk, Virginia and an aircraft carrier in San Diego, California.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Hazardous substances, both heavy metals and some man-made organic chemicals, are today widely distributed in the Baltic marine environment. Elevated levels of especially toxic contaminants are of concern, because they can pose a risk to sensitive ecosystems in the Baltic Sea. The objective is to compare and evaluate different classification systems for assessing pollution with hazardous substances in the marine environment presently used by the Nordic countries surrounding the Baltic Sea. The intention is also to propose an operational approach, which can bring the current monitoring strategies more in line with the objectives for environmental assessments in the EU Water Framework Directive. It is argued that an ecotoxicological approach should be developed and it should be based mainly on concentration levels in sediment and biota like mussels and fish and not on concentration levels in seawater. The comparisons and the evaluation of the different classification systems are based on available data for tributyltin (TBT), cadmium (Cd) and polychlorinated bisphenyls (PCBs) as three examples of hazardous substances occurring in the Baltic Sea region

Book excerpt: In the early 1980s, two water-supply systems on the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina were found to be contaminated with the industrial solvents trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE). The water systems were supplied by the Tarawa Terrace and Hadnot Point watertreatment plants, which served enlisted-family housing, barracks for unmarried service personnel, base administrative offices, schools, and recreational areas. The Hadnot Point water system also served the base hospital and an industrial area and supplied water to housing on the Holcomb Boulevard water system (full-time until 1972 and periodically thereafter). This book examines what is known about the contamination of the water supplies at Camp Lejeune and whether the contamination can be linked to any adverse health outcomes in former residents and workers at the base.
