Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Tinnevelly District in the Presidency of Madras The District of Tinnevelly occupies the eastern half of the extreme southern end of the Indian peninsula. It lies between 8 5' and 9 45' North Latitude, and 77 20' and 78 20' East Longitude. In shape it is roughly triangular, haring the Western Ghauts as its western, and the sea for its eastern and southern boundary. On the north it adjoins the Madura District, from which it is divided by no natural boundary, but roughly by a parallel drawn east and west through the large town and railway station of Virudupati. Its extent is 5,176 square miles, with a greatest length north and south of 120 miles and a width east and west increasing from nothing at Cape Comorin to 75 miles at the Madura frontier. It contains 1,824 villages, of which 1,094 are Government, 570 are Zemindari, and 160 are Inam. Within this area is comprised a great variety of soils and of natural features, including black cotton plains, sandy tracts along the coast, and undulating and broken country at tho foot of the mountains, chiefly red gravel and sand. Gravelly ridges or abrupt masses of rock are scattered about over the district, which is backed by the lofty range of the Western Ghauts. Tiunevelly may be considered as an epitome, or facsimile on a miniature scale, of the whole Madras Presidency, almost every - feature of which is repeated on a smaller scale within this little area. The garrison fought with the indignant ferocity of wild beasts, defending their dens and families: several of them stood, as in defiance, on the top of the battlements, and endeavoured to grapple with the first ascendants, hoping with them to twist the ladders down; and this failing, stabbed with their lances, but being wholly exposed themselves, were easily shot by aim from the rear of the escalade. The assailants admired, for no Europeans had ever seen such excess of courage in the natives of Hindostan, and continually offered quarter, which was always answered by the menace and intention of death: not a man had gained the rampart at two o'clock in the afternoon, when another cessation of the attack ensued; on which Ranga Rao assembled the principal men, told them that there was no hopes of maintaining the fort, and that it was immediately necessary to preserve their wives and children from the violation of Europeans, and the more ignominious authority of Viziaram Raz.
