Book excerpt: Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Experiments in Physics: Laboratory Instruction for College Classes In preparing this text-book for use in Physical Labora tories, the needs of all three of these classes of students have been borne in mind, how successfully it is not possi ble to say. The only experiments described are quantita tive, because it is assumed that purely qualitative ones are demonstrated in the lecture-room. Those experiments which are suited to a definite student or to a definite class must be selected by the instructor; and it is impossible to give any precise statement as to which are best adapted for any particular purpose. It has been impossible, of course, to include all the experiments which might be desired; but it is hoped that no important principle or piece of appara tus has been slighted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Projects in Physics: A Manual of Practical Experiments for Beginners These experiments have been organized for the purpose of giving concrete expression, in the field of physics, to the recent tendencies in the teaching of science with respect to aim, subject matter, and method. The physics course in a modern high school should be organized according to the recognized function of education in a democratic society. It should include units of study which the masses of boys and girls of high school age are able to pursue with profit. It should proceed toward an organization of practical situations, activities, and phenomena, the value of which will be recognized and approved by teachers, students, parents, administrators of education, and others who are responsible for the work which boys and girls do in the high school. It is intended that these experiments should form part of a physics course which includes class discussions and demonstrations. They were devised and used for several years in a beginners' course in practical physics. They differ from the conventional physics laboratory experiments in that they deal more directly with the mechanisms and appliances of everyday experience. The materials and procedure have been worked out in detail in order to aid the busy science teacher in the laborious task of placing practical laboratory study upon a workable basis. A large list of projects and problems is offered. In a year's course of thirty-six to forty weeks perhaps not more than half of the ninety-five experiments can be performed. The complete list represents two years' work unless more time is assigned to laboratory study than is the custom. The experiments are arranged to follow the order of presentation of the subject matter in many college physics texts. In most of the experiments the apparatus is of standard design as found in most physics laboratories.New to this edition are the experiments numbered with a "D" suffix. In these "discovery" experiments, contributed by Dr. Smith, students are not told about the theory, but discover it in the course of completing the experiment.

Book excerpt: Laboratory experiences as a part of most U.S. high school science curricula have been taken for granted for decades, but they have rarely been carefully examined. What do they contribute to science learning? What can they contribute to science learning? What is the current status of labs in our nations high schools as a context for learning science? This book looks at a range of questions about how laboratory experiences fit into U.S. high schools: What is effective laboratory teaching? What does research tell us about learning in high school science labs? How should student learning in laboratory experiences be assessed? Do all student have access to laboratory experiences? What changes need to be made to improve laboratory experiences for high school students? How can school organization contribute to effective laboratory teaching? With increased attention to the U.S. education system and student outcomes, no part of the high school curriculum should escape scrutiny. This timely book investigates factors that influence a high school laboratory experience, looking closely at what currently takes place and what the goals of those experiences are and should be. Science educators, school administrators, policy makers, and parents will all benefit from a better understanding of the need for laboratory experiences to be an integral part of the science curriculum-and how that can be accomplished.

Book excerpt: This market-leading manual for the first-year physics laboratory course offers a wide range of class-tested experiments designed specifically for use in small to mid-size lab programs. A series of integrated experiments emphasizes the use of computerized instrumentation and includes a set of “computer-assisted experiments” to allow students and instructors to gain experience with modern equipment. This option also enables instructors to determine the appropriate balance between traditional and computer-based experiments for their courses. By analyzing data through two different methods, students gain a greater understanding of the concepts behind the experiments. The Seventh Edition is updated with the latest information and techniques involving state-of-the-art equipment, and a new Guided Learning feature addresses the growing interest in guided-inquiry pedagogy. Fourteen additional experiments are also available through custom printing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Laboratory Manual of Physics In making this Manual two main objects have been kept in view. First, the teaching of Physics by the Inductive Method, that is, the presenting of a logically arranged course of experimental work that shall cover; the ground of Elementary Physics. Second, the providing of sufficient laboratory work to meet the entrance requirements of any college in the country. The authors are not so visionary as to suppose that boys and girls can, unaided, rediscover the laws of Physics, but we know that, if sufficiently careful directions are given to pupils in the performance of experiments, and definite instruction is given them as to the manner of studying results obtained, they will learn from Nature first-hand many of her great laws. And these will be much more strongly impressed than when learned from a text-book or from the teacher's experiments. From the generalizations made by the pupils, deductions can be made and then tested for their validity, thus keeping he pupil on the borderland between inductions and deductions, a place where the greatest mental development is obtained. This plan is the underlying idea of science study, and the acquiring of this scientific method is of far more importance than the mere gleaning of facts. The facts may in time be forgotten, but the method of mind operation will remain as part of the character developed. Careful manipulation, accurate observation of phenomena, and logical deductions or generalizations should be the three steps kept in mind. The notes written by the pupils should be neat, terse, and in good English, and should be logically arranged as shown in the steps mentioned above. Insist on these three elements of written work.
