This book was released on 2014-05-19 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning, Speech and Thought in the Mentally Retarded contains the proceedings of Symposia 4 and 5 held at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School in London on October 31, 1969 and March 20, 1970, respectively, under the auspices of the Institute for Research into Mental Retardation. This monograph presents topical problems in mental retardation, with emphasis on learning processes, speech, and thought. The application of operant learning techniques to the development of language in the retarded is highlighted. This book is comprised of four chapters and begins by outlining directions in research on learning deficits, followed by a discussion on teaching processes in the care of severely retarded children. The next chapter deals with speech and thought in the mentally retarded, with particular reference to two basic problems: the relative priority of language or thought and the selection processes underlying language. The final chapter explores language delay and language deviation in mentally retarded children. Throughout the book, the focus is on language: its nature, its development in the constitutionally normal and handicapped, some theoretical controversies among experts in this field, and the development of appropriate techniques for teaching language to the mentally retarded. This monograph will be useful to psychologists and clinicians working in the field of mental retardation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late 1985, The President's Committee on Mental Retardation (PCMR) spon sored a National Strategy Conference on Mental Retardation and Mental Health in Washington, D.C. The purpose of this conference was to bring together our nation's leadership in the fields of mental retardation and mental health in order to delineate the state of the art relative to the diagnosis, care, and treatment of citizens with mental retardation/mental illness, as well as to chart a national course for the support and integration of citizens with these challenging needs into the confluence of family and community life. The President's Committee on Mental Retardation recognized that citizens with these needs constitute one of the most underserved and, at times, forgotten segments of the population. With this in mind, the PCMR called together govern mental, professional, and parental representatives from across the nation to define the nature and extent of the problem, programs, and services that promise hope for substantive improvement in the quality of life of citizens with mental retardation/mental illness.

This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental retardation has probably existed for as long as mankind has inhabited the earth. References to seemingly retarded persons appear in Greek and Roman literature. Examination of Egyptian mummies suggests that some may have suffered from diseases associated with mental retardation. Mohammed advocated feeding and housing those without reason. There is other evidence for favorable attitudes toward the retarded in early history, but attitudes var ied from age to age and from country to country. The concept of remediation did not emerge until the nineteenth century. Earlier, in 1798, ltard published an account of his attempt to train the "wild boy of Aveyron." A rash of efforts to habilitate retarded persons followed. Training schools were developed in Europe and the United States in the 1800s; however, these early schools did not fulfill their promise, and by the end of the nineteenth century large, inhumane warehouses for retarded persons existed. The notion of habilitation through training had largely been abandoned and was not to reappear until after World War II.

This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important practical problems in child psychology and psychia try is the differential diagnosis of emotional disorders. Until recently, the gener al mode of assessment had been to apply to children the characteristics of psychopathology that were evident in adults. In addition, there had been few assessment tools available for use with children aside from modified versions of adult instruments. Understandably, this approach was controversial, and dissat isfaction with it led to the more recent knowledge that adult and child problems may be manifested quite differently. The third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders takes these factors into account much more extensively than previous editions. Furthermore, a great deal of research on methodology in child assessment procedures has emerged recently. Yet, in spite of these advances, practicing clinicians are still frequently at a loss in moving from the characteristics of the disturbed child before them to the final assign ment of a psychiatric diagnosis. The focus of this book is to outline the various methods of viewing and categorizing the wide range childhood psycho pathology, with special emphasis on the end product of making a differential diagnosis. Our goal was to make this book unique in several ways. First, we attempted to cover a wider range of disorders than is typical in currently available hand books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Services for Children and their Families: Aspects of Child Care for Social Workers is a collection of essays describing the level that the child care service has reached on the eve of the reorganization of program. These essays contain the values, ideas, opinions, and philosophies that are part of the social services. These articles cover the period from 1870 to 1970; in 1971 child care services became the responsibility of the Department of Health and Social Services. Some papers review the influences—historical, economical or geographical—that make the environment where the social worker operates, of which he or she should be aware of their effects. Another essay discusses the contributions of the Children Act 1948 in which it recognizes the rights of the child as an individual human being. It has only been recently that any large-scale use of resources to the preventive work of child care has occurred. One paper addresses the challenges for social workers to re-examine themselves, their responsibilities to society, their identification with certain social controls, and the structures and ways that society can show its concern for children and their families. This collection can benefit sociologists, economists, historians, students and academicians doing sociological research, as well as policy makers involved in social services and welfare.
