Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Floyd Collins is perhaps the most famous person you've never heard of, but this young man's tragic death made him celebrated as "the Greatest Cave Explorer Ever Known." Collins was a Kentucky cave explorer in the early part of the 20th century, characterized by his lack of fear when exploring the most difficult cave passages, and few people could match his persistence and endurance. In the winter of 1925, Collins became trapped for more than two weeks in a cave located within the boundaries of what is now Mammoth Cave National Park. The story of Floyd Collins becoming trapped and ultimately dying alone in a cave held a powerful grip on the hearts and minds of people the world over. The resulting media coverage put Mammoth Cave on the map and helped usher the actual designation of Mammoth Cave as a national park. His explorations laid the foundation for others to later discover the truth of Mammoth Cave, the longest cave in the world.

Download or read book The Lee Shore written by Loyd Collins and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-10 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a cherished fictional device to build a story around the discovery of a previously unpublished text. The stratagem is used by Henry James in The Aspern Papers. A.S. Byatt's Booker-Prize winning novel, Possession: A Romance, is also built this way. The Lee Shore is not an invention, but an actual flesh-and-blood manuscript. I only know about the book, because its author, Loyd "Pete" Collins, was a colleague and a close friend of my father, John Cheever. In 1935 Collins published a well-thought-of novel titled Call Me Ishmael. He then stopped publishing books, but he didn't stop writing. He worked for 30 years on The Lee Shore, and was fiddling with the manuscript almost until he died in 1966. Loyd's widow, Lib Logan Collins, kept the pages in a bank vault for 35 years. Her desire to see the book out before her own death prompted two of Loyd's nephews to produce a typescript. Here it is then, a first-class story, but also an artifact. The Lee Shore hails from the time before the invention of memoir, but reads with the force of living history. The romance begins in upstate New York when everybody smoked, and the streams were thronged with gigantic trout. --Benjamin Cheever May, 2004
Book Synopsis The Miracle Braves of 1914 by : Bob Brady

Book excerpt: Long before the Red Sox "Impossible Dream" season, Boston’s now nearly forgotten “other” team, the 1914 Boston Braves, performed a baseball “miracle” that resounds to this very day. The "Miracle Braves" were Boston's first "worst-to-first" winners of the World Series. Shortly after the turn of the previous century, the once mighty Braves had become a perennial member of the National League’s second division. Preseason pundits didn't believe the 1914 team posed a meaningful threat to John McGraw’s powerful New York Giants. During the first half of that campaign, Boston lived down to such expectations, taking up residence in the league’s basement. Refusing to throw in the towel at the midseason mark, their leader, the pugnacious George Stallings, deftly manipulated his daily lineup and pitching staff to engineer a remarkable second-half climb in the standings all the way to first place. The team’s winning momentum carried into the postseason, where the Braves swept Connie Mack's heralded Athletics and claimed the only World Championship ever won by Boston’s National League entry. And for 100 years, the management, players, and fans of underperforming ball clubs have turned to the Miracle Braves to catch a glimmer of hope that such a midseason turnaround could be repeated. Through the collaborative efforts of a band of dedicated members of the Society for American Baseball Research, this benchmark accomplishment is richly revealed to the reader in The Miracle Braves of 1914: Boston's Original Worst-to-First World Series Champions. The essence of the “miracle” is captured through a comprehensive compendium of incisive biographies of the players and other figures associated with the team, with additional relevant research pieces on the season. After a journey through the pages of this book, the die-hard baseball fan will better understand why the call to “Wait Until Next Year” should never be voiced prematurely.
