Book excerpt: In 1995, Arizona legislators passed laws specifically to implement charter schools in Arizona. Approving 15 year charters (i.e., contracts), allowing charter schools to cross school district boundaries, and requiring the charter schools to administer the state assessment are three of the many charter school statutes written into law. In 2010, those initial charters are expiring. The variation in school practices that occur between charter schools is great as reported by researchers nationwide. This difference does not stop at the borders of Arizona; some Arizona charter schools are labeled as excelling in performance while others are labeled as underperforming. There is limited research of Arizona charter schools and the variance that exists among them. There were two purposes for this dissertation. The first purpose was to analyze the influence of school practices and student characteristics on charter middle school students' mathematics and reading performance at grade 8. The second purpose was to assess those influences over time (i.e., 2007-2009). The assessment used was Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) which remained stable during this span of time. Multiple imputations were performed for missing data. Hierarchical linear cross-classified random effects modeling (HLM/CCREM) was used to assess the data while taking student mobility into consideration. The results showed that the effect of teacher experience influenced lower achieving students, that teachers teaching out of their area of expertise had a negative effect on mathematics and reading achievement of students, and attending a charter school that was converted from a traditional public school has an advantage in Arizona. An indicator of whether a student was attending a charter school in 2006 (prior to the time period of this study) was added to the model and showed that students scored higher in mathematics and reading if they also attend a charter school in 2006. All factors assessed in this study were accounted for even if they didn't remain in the model due to fit statistics. These results will contribute to the field of education by providing empirical evidence of the effects of charter school practices on student achievement.

Protective factors can reduce the likelihood of children and adolescents experiencing these negative outcomes. Research shows that positive school climate is a powerful protective factor for youth. The present study investigated the longitudinal relations between middle school students' school climate perceptions and their academic, social-emotional, and behavioral development over two years. Specifically, 510 students in grades 5-9 from six rural schools rated their support and influence at school as well as their internalizing problems, personal adjustment, and risky behavior. Students' academic performance was progress monitored using reading and math curriculum-based measures. Data were examined using Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM). Results revealed significant relations between students' perceived school climate and their social-emotional, behavioral, and mathematics outcomes over time. Further, school climate was a predictor of students' future involvement in risky behavior. There was a slight negative trend in students' perceived school climate as well as increases in their social-emotional problems and risky behavior, which suggests the need to implement evidence-based school climate improvement strategies aligned to students' developmental levels. Findings indicate the importance of incorporating school climate assessment and improvement strategies in school practices and policies to enhance student outcomes and school contexts. Limitations and future directions for research are discussed based on results from the present study and the school climate literature. Overall, school climate significantly influences outcomes for youth.

Book excerpt: This study examined the influence of building configuration on the academic achievement and attendance of students who were considered chronically absent. A longitudinal nonequivalent groups research design was used to test the study’s six hypotheses. Data were collected from over 10,000 students within 38 K-8 schools and 40 6-8 middle schools in 24 urban school districts. These districts belonged to the Middle Cities Education Association (MCEA) in a Midwestern state. Student achievement data were collected from this state’s Department of Education’s Center for Educational Performance and Information (CEPI) database that focused specifically on 6th (2009) and 8th-grade (2011) achievement and attendance results. Data were analyzed using an independent samples t-test to measure the differences in mean scores of the two groups, and a one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to determine the intervening effects of the covariates on various demographic characteristics. Findings in this study indicate that there were no significant improvements in mathematics, reading, and chronically absent attendance rates for students who attended K-8 configured schools as compared to their corresponding peers attending 6-8 middle schools. This held true when adjusting for race, gender, Free and/or Reduced Lunch status, and students with disabilities. This study helps fill a void in the current body of literature by examining the influence of grade configuration (i.e., K-8 schools versus traditional 6-8 middle schools) on student achievement and attendance, and whether selected demographic variables (e.g., race, gender, Free and/or Reduced Lunch status, and students with disabilities) had an influence on these differences. The study concludes with several recommendations for further study.

Book excerpt: For decades, the achievement gap across White, Black, and Hispanic students has yet to be reduced, with White students consistently outperforming Black and Hispanic students on standardized mathematics assessments (National Assessment of Educational Progress, 2017). In order to reduce this gap, achievement motivation scholars have been studying the multifaceted ways in which cognitive factors may influence academic outcomes, especially for students who have traditionally been under-examined and underserved (Borman, & Overman, 2004; Borman & Dowling, 2010). Eccles, Wigfield (e.g., Eccles, 2007; Wigfield & Eccles, 2000), and Middleton and colleagues (Middleton, 2013; Middleton & Spanias, 1999; Middleton & Toluk, 1999) have shown that the interactions of efficacy beliefs, self-concept, and task value can have a profound effect on academic outcomes. Using Eccles et al.’s (1983) and Middleton’s (2013) work as a foundation, the present study set forth with two goals: 1) to expand Middleton’s model by relying on Eccles’ work and 2) to test the model across White, Black, and Hispanic students in order to better understand similarities and differences in how motivation functions to impact the math performance of students within these ethnic groups. Participants were 18,214 ninth-graders in 944 schools supported by the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) for goal #1 and for goal #2, 15,651 Black, Hispanic, & White adolescents of the 18,214 students utilized in goal #1. All students were from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS: 09; Ingels et al., 2011). Results showed that for goal #1 the proposed model adequately fit the data. For goal #2, the proposed model was valid for White, Black, and Hispanic students, but significant differences were found in how math interest and math self-efficacy influence other motivational variables across these groups of students. Results are discussed in terms of their utility in informing educational practices, limitations, and future directions.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Before investing a large amount of human and financial resources in grade configuration redesign, urban school administrators need to understand whether it is the large structural changes, like grade configuration redesign, or whether it is the practices implemented within those larger structures that make the biggest impact on student achievement. In this study, 32 K-8 configured schools in the southeast United States are paired with 32 6-8 configured schools with comparable SES and minority rates within the same urban school district. This research uses the results from 192 educator surveys to determine the implementation level of established model practices, including interdisciplinary teaming, common teacher planning, heterogeneous grouping, advisory periods, exploratory courses, and looping. In addition, the reading and math achievement gain scores from the Florida Comprehensive Test of 12,727 sixth grade students are used to determine if there is a relationship between any of the practices, the grade level configuration of the school and student achievement in an urban setting. There were differences in student achievement by grade configuration, with the students in K-8 schools making significantly greater gains in both reading and math; however, that increase may well be due to other factors such as grade level size or socioeconomic differences rather than the configuration of the school. Of the model practices examined, interdisciplinary teaming was the only model practice that had a significant difference in level of implementation, which was higher in the K-8 configured schools. When achievement gains were compared to the level of implementation of each of the six model practices, no significant relationships were found. Finally, there was no difference in combined effects of grade configuration and implementation of model level practices with gains in student achievement in reading or mathematics.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effect of the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) on reading and mathematics achievement in 5th- through 8th-grade students. The study analyzed scores on state assessments for more than 5,600 students who attended 22 KIPP middle schools in nine states and Washington, DC, in the 2000s. Students were followed for one to four years depending on data availability, and the study standardized all test scores so they could be compared across states. KIPP middle school students were matched to students who had attended their same public elementary schools but subsequently attended non-KIPP middle schools. The effectiveness of each school was assessed by comparing the average achievement of KIPP middle school students with that of their matches in the public schools. Students in the 22 KIPP middle schools studied had higher reading and math test scores, on average, than similar students in public middle schools.
