Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against ignorance: the suppressed reality of mental illness and the consequences for those affected and their families by Carole Petcher & Raymond Petignat The widely held ignorance in the field of mental illnesses provided the major impulse that prompted the writing of this book. Most people are completely lacking in knowledge, although mental illnesses, in this case schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, are really not as uncommon as many would like to believe. In our judgment, widespread information and education are desperately needed, also because our so-called Opinion Leaders often present this subject in completely the wrong light. When a spectacular case comes into the public spotlight, this ignorance, a hard but unfortunately justified word, is horrifyingly obvious even in the well-educated. This is apparent in television discussions and newspaper articles, where hypotheses and theories are quoted as indisputable truths. The general knowledge about diseases such as cancer, through AIDs to circulatory complications and malaria, is considerably greater than the understanding of the forms of mental illness. We would like to make the general public aware of the serious associated problems faced by families, to provide these families with our support and sympathy, to remind the media and the lawyers of their power that can be used for good or evil and to sensitise the psychiatric profession to the wider picture and the danger of dogmatism. In this vein, we are ambitious; only you can judge if we are over-ambitious. Although we touch on the subject of the obsessive-compulsive disorder, the main theme of our book concerns schizophrenia and manic-depression (bipolar disorder). These are serious but and this may be a source of amazement to many treatable illnesses, if the patient meets certain requirements and adequate resources are available. The stories that follow show that this is unfortunately not always the case, particularly when the picture is distorted by the idea of the family and environment as causative factors. It must also be said that immense steps have been achieved in the last twenty years with regard to the treatment of the patient and in the approach of the medical profession to the family. Schizophrenia, and this often goes unrecognised, is the most expensive illness of all, as it results in not only direct but also indirect costs, such as inability to work, pensions, financial support by the families. In summary, this book primarily confronts the often grim experiences of relatives with the inadequate knowledge of a major section of the broader population, concerning the existence of mental illnesses and the social problems involved. Secondly, it aims to provide some basic information on the current thinking about mental illness and to offer some practical advice on dealing with it. Thirdly it challenges the professional world with the still existing divisions between medical knowledge and everyday practice. Early diagnosis, with conscientious preliminary investigations, and the education of young parents in this field seem to us to be particularly necessary. In short, we do not aim to alleviate the situation of the relatives, but to improve the living conditions and perspectives of people that suffer from a serious mental illness. The equation is eminently simple: when this is achieved, the relatives will also benefit!

Book excerpt: Dave Glasheen's life began spiralling out of control after he lost his family's vast fortune in the stock market crash of 1987. After a series of catastrophes, he needed to take drastic measures to restore himself. Opting out of the rat race, he cast himself away to a deserted island off the north-east tip of Australia, as far off the grid as was humanly possible. He has lived there ever since. One annual supermarket shop, a sketchy internet connection, and enough ingredients for a home brew satisfy Dave's material needs. He catches fish, traps rainwater and cooks on an open fire. For company he tames dingoes, meets with friends from the Aboriginal community 40 kilometres away, and entertains drop-ins such as Russell Crowe sailing past on his honeymoon. Then there's Dave's running feud with Boxhead, an antisocial saltwater crocodile who just won't leave him in peace. Between heartbreak and hair-raising adventures, Dave has found happiness on Restoration Island. Brimming with humour, eccentricity and hard-earned wisdom, The Millionaire Castaway will give you a whole new view on life.

Book excerpt: "Rebecca Rupp's magical tale . . . radiates a glow as golden as the dragon's scales." – Boston Globe Hannah, Zachary, and Sarah Emily are spending the summer at their great-aunt Mehitabel's house on faraway Lonely Island. There, in a cave hidden high above the ocean, they discover a fabulous creature: a glittering three-headed golden dragon with a kind heart, an unpredictable temper, and a memory that spans 20,000 years. Transported by the magic of the dragon's stories, the children meet Mei-lan, a young girl in ancient China; nineteenth-century cabin boy Jamie Pritchett; and, in more recent times, Hitty and her brother, Will, who survive a frightening plane crash on a desert island. In this fluidly written novel, Rebecca Rupp explores what three children from the present learn from the past - and from an unlikely but wise and generous friend.

Book excerpt: THE SHOCKING STORY OF A DESERT ISLAND DREAM THAT WENT SOUR 'Writer seeks "wife" for a year on tropical island.' The opportunity to escape from it all was irresistible. Lucy Irvine answered the advertisement - and found herself alone on a remote desert island with a 'husband' she hardly knew. Lucy Irvine fell in love with the seductive, if cruel, beauty of that untouched Eden, whose power to enslave and enchant her never slackened throughout the whole of her amazing adventure. Uncompromisingly candid and sometimes shocking, Castaway is her compulsively readable account of a desert island dream which threatened to turn into a nightmare of illness, thirst and personal antipathy. Now a film by Nicholas Roeg starring Amanda Donohoe and Oliver Reed,

Dolphins flash in the blue waters around it, sea otter play in the vast kep beds, and sea elephants loll on the stony beaches. Here, in the early 1800s, according to history, an Indian girl spent eighteen years alone, and this beautifully written novel is her story. It is a romantic adventure filled with drama and heartache, for not only was mere subsistence on so desolate a spot a near miracle, but Karana had to contend with the ferocious pack of wild dogs that had killed her younger brother, constantly guard against the Aleutian sea otter hunters, and maintain a precarious food supply. More than this, it is an adventure of the spirit that will haunt the reader long after the book has been put down. Karana's quiet courage, her Indian self-reliance and acceptance of fate, transform what to many would have been a devastating ordeal into an uplifting experience. From loneliness and terror come strength and serenity in this Newbery Medal-winning classic.

Book excerpt: The desert islands in the Sea of Cortez are little known except to a few intrepid tourists, sailors, and fishermen. Though at first glance these stark islands may appear barren, they are a refuge for an astounding variety of plants and animals. While many of the species are typical of the greater Sonoran Desert region, some are endemic or unique to one or two islands. For example, Isla Santa Catalina is home to the worldÕs only rattlesnake that has lost its ability to grow a rattle. Other islands host nesting birds, such as Isla Rasa, a tiny, flat flow of basalt lava that attracts nearly half a million elegant and royal terns and HeermannÕs gulls each spring. The Desert Islands of MexicoÕs Sea of Cortez is one of the few books devoted to the biogeography of this remarkable part of the world. The book explores the geologic origin of the gulf and its islands, presents some of the basics of island biogeography, details insular lifeÑincluding residents of the intertidal zone Ñand provides a brief outlook for preserving this area. More than a simple guidebook, AitchisonÕs writing will take both actual and armchair travelers through a gripping tale of natural history. Like the rest of our fragile planet, the Sea of Cortez and its islands are threatened by humans. Overfishing has eliminated or greatly diminished many fish stocks, and dams on rivers that once flowed into the gulf prevent certain nutrients from reaching the sea. The tenuousness of this area makes the bookÕs extraordinary photographs and the firsthand descriptions by a well-known teacher, writer, and photographer all the more compelling.

They were the homes of my people." --Chief Francisco Patencio, the Cahuilla of Palm Springs The Anza-Borrego Desert on California's southern border is a remote and harsh landscape, what author Lawrence Hogue calls "a land of dreams and nightmares, where the waking world meets the fantastic shapes and bent forms of imagination." In a country so sere and rugged, it's easy to imagine that no one has ever set foot there -- a wilderness waiting to be explored. Yet for thousands of years, the land was home to the Cahuilla and Kumeyaay Indians, who, far from being the "noble savages" of European imagination, served as active caretakers of the land that sustained them, changing it in countless ways and adapting it to their own needs as they adapted to it.In All the Wild and Lonely Places, Lawrence Hogue offers a thoughtful and evocative portrait of Anza-Borrego and of the people who have lived there, both original inhabitants and Spanish and American newcomers -- soldiers, Forty-Niners, cowboys, canal-builders, naturalists, recreationists, and restorationists. We follow along with the author on a series of excursions into the desert, each time learning more about the region's history and why it calls into question deeply held beliefs about "untouched" nature. And we join him in considering the implications of those revelations for how we think about the land that surrounds us, and how we use and care for that land."We could persist in seeing the desert as an emptiness, a place hostile to humans, a pristine wilderness," Hogue writes. "But it's better to see this as a place where ancient peoples tried to make their homes, and succeeded. We can learn from what they did here, and use that knowledge to reinvigorate our concept of wildness. Humans are part of nature; it's still nature, even when we change it."
