Book excerpt: A London Life, and Other Tales: Large Print Henry James A collection of short stories: A London life -- The Patagonia -- The liar -- Mrs. Temperly. "A London Life" is a novella by Henry James, first published in Scribner's Magazine in 1888. The plot revolves around a crumbling marriage and its impact on many other people, especially Laura Wing, the sister of the soon-to-be-divorced wife. Laura is a classic Jamesian "central consciousness," whose reflections and emotions color the presentation of the storyline and the other characters. The tale is notable for its straightforward, even hard-edged approach to sexuality and divorce. This might reflect the influence of French naturalism on James during the 1880s. "The Liar" is a short story by Henry James which first appeared in The Century Magazine in May-June 1888, and in book form the following year (Macmillan and Co., London). It is the story of a young man's dilemma when he meets a woman he used to love, and finds her married to a man of a vile, dishonest nature. Concerned that her own purity has been spoilt, he tests her to see whether she is only shielding her husband out of love, and is shocked to find that she will go even to the lengths of sacrificing an innocent victim rather than admitting her husband's true character. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. It seems that in writing it the author's attitude to his heroine gradually became more critical and in the finished text a number of the other characters try to make Laura Wing realize that her standards are just too high and that she applies them too rigidly for modern society.

James was the son of Henry James Senior, a clergyman, and the brother of William James, the psychologist and philosopher. He grew up mostly in the United States but spent the majority of his life in England. He became a British citizen in 1915. His sister, Alice James, was also a writer. In his novels, he wrote from the viewpoint of one of the characters. Some literary critics compared this to impressionist painting. In his own literary criticism, James insisted that writers be allowed the greatest possible freedom in how they looked at the world.

Book excerpt: Finalist for the 2022 Mythopoeic Scholarship Award for Myth and Fantasy Studies From the time of Charles Dickens, the imaginative power of the city of London has frequently inspired writers to their most creative flights of fantasy. Charting a new history of London fantasy writing from the Victorian era to the 21st century, Fairy Tales of London explores a powerful tradition of urban fantasy distinct from the rural tales of writers such as J.R.R. Tolkien. Hadas Elber-Aviram traces this urban tradition from Dickens, through the scientific romances of H.G. Wells, the anti-fantasies of George Orwell and Mervyn Peake to contemporary science fiction and fantasy writers such as Michael Moorcock, Neil Gaiman and China Miéville.

Book excerpt: It was raining, apparently, but she didn't mind-she would put on stout shoes and walk over toPlash. She was restless and so fidgety that it was a pain; there were strange voices that frightenedher-they threw out the ugliest intimations-in the empty rooms at home. She would see old Mrs.Berrington, whom she liked because she was so simple, and old Lady Davenant, who was stayingwith her and who was interesting for reasons with which simplicity had nothing to do. Then shewould come back to the children's tea-she liked even better the last half-hour in the schoolroom, with the bread and butter, the candles and the red fire, the little spasms of confidence of Miss Steetthe nursery-governess, and the society of Scratch and Parson (their nicknames would have made youthink they were dogs) her small, magnificent nephews, whose flesh was so firm yet so soft and theireyes so charming when they listened to stories. Plash was the dower-house and about a mile and ahalf, through the park, from Mellows. It was not raining after all, though it had been; there was onlya grayness in the air, covering all the strong, rich green, and a pleasant damp, earthy smell, and thewalks were smooth and hard, so that the expedition was not arduous. The girl had been in England more than a year, but there were some satisfactions she had not gotused to yet nor ceased to enjoy, and one of these was the accessibility, the convenience of thecountry. Within the lodge-gates or without them it seemed all alike a park-it was all so intensely'property.' The very name of Plash, which was quaint and old, had not lost its effect upon her, norhad it become indifferent to her that the place was a dower-house-the little red-walled, iviedasylum to which old Mrs. Berrington had retired when, on his father's death, her son came into theestates. Laura Wing thought very ill of the custom of the expropriation of the widow in the eveningof her days, when honour and abundance should attend her more than ever; but her condemnationof this wrong forgot itself when so many of the consequences looked right-barring a littledampness: which was the fate sooner or later of most of her unfavourable judgments of Englishinstitutions. Iniquities in such a country somehow always made pictures; and there had been dowerhouses in the novels, mainly of fashionable life, on which her later childhood was fed. The iniquitydid not as a general thing prevent these retreats from being occupied by old ladies with wonderfulreminiscences and rare voices, whose reverses had not deprived them of a great deal of becominghereditary lace. In the park, half-way, suddenly, Laura stopped, with a pain-a moral pang-thatalmost took away her breath; she looked at the misty glades and the dear old beeches (so familiarthey were now and loved as much as if she owned them); they seemed in their unlighted Decemberbareness conscious of all the trouble, and they made her conscious of all the change. A year ago sheknew nothing, and now she knew almost everything; and the worst of her knowledge (or at least theworst of the fears she had raised upon it) had come to her in that beautiful place, where everythingwas so full of peace and purity, of the air of happy submission to immemorial law. The place was thesame but her eyes were different: they had seen such sad, bad things in so short a time. Yes, the timewas short and everything was strange. Laura Wing was too uneasy even to sigh, and as she walkedon she lightened her tread almost as if she were going on tiptoe

Laura Wing, an impoverished American girl, is visiting her sister Selina Berrington in London. Selina's husband Lionel, boorish and often drunk, is preparing to divorce his wife for her adultery with Charlie Crispin. Laura challenges Selina about her affair and doubts Selina's protestations of innocence. Lady Davenant, an elderly friend of the family, counsels Laura not to take her sister's marital troubles so hard. Laura meets a pleasant but boring American named Wendover, who becomes a suitor. Eventually, after a tempestuous and (for the reader) entertaining scene at the opera, Selina leaves her husband and goes to Brussels with Crispin. Laura spurns Wendover's marriage proposal and pursues her sister to Brussels, where she accomplishes nothing. Laura finally goes back to America, where Wendover follows her though there is no assurance as to how their future will play out. The story ends with a reminder that the case of Berrington v. Berrington and others is upcoming in the courts.
