Abrothallus to Badhamia In the case of genera we have not thought it necessary to give special references except in the case of those peculiar to North America or first described in North America, or in cases where American writers have given critical notes on certain genera found in Europe as well as America. When we have had any reason for differing from other writers as to limits of genera our opinion is given in the form of notes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 75 percent of all fungi that have been described to date belong to the phylum Ascomycota. They are usually referred to as Ascomycetes and are commonly found and collected by mushroom enthusiasts. Ascomycetes exhibit a remarkable range of biodiversity, are beautiful and visually complex, and some, including morels and truffles, are highly prized for their edibility. Many play significant roles in plant ecology because of the mycorrhizal associations that they form. Thus it is remarkable that no book dedicated to describing and illustrating the North American Ascomycetes has been published in over sixty years. Filling the gap between technical publications and the limited representation of Ascomycetes in general mushroom field guides, Ascomycete Fungi of North America is a scientifically accurate work dedicated to this significant group of fungi. Because it is impossible to describe and illustrate the tens of thousands of species that occur in North America, the authors focus on species found in the continental United States and Canada that are large enough to be readily noticeable to mycologists, naturalists, photographers, and mushroom hunters. They provide 843 color photographs and more than 600 described species, many of which are illustrated in color for the first time. While emphasizing macroscopic field identification characteristics for a general audience, the authors also include microscopic and other advanced information useful to students and professional mycologists. In addition, a color key to the species described in this book offers a visual guide to assist in the identification process.

But it is designed to do much more. It will introduce you to a variety of ways to enjoy mushrooms. For most people they are things of beauty and wonder, to be discovered unexpectedly on a walk in the woods; some try to preserve and communicate their sense of awe on film; others only want to find delectable morsels for the table; a few strive to find rarities or to identify mysterious strangers. This book will help you take the first steps in all these approaches to the world of mushrooming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of American Fungi Mushrooms: Edible, Poisonous, Etc Value of Form and Characters - The different kinds of mushrooms vary in form. Some are quite strikingly different from others, so that no one would have difficulty in recognizing the difference in shape. For example, an umbrella-shaped mushroom like the one shown in Fig. I or 81 is easily distinguished from a shelving one like that in Fig. 9 or 188. But in many cases different species vary only slightly in form, so that it becomes a more or less difficult matter to distinguish them. In those plants (for the mushroom is a plant) where the different kinds are nearly alike in form, there are other characters than mere general form which enable one to tell them apart. These, it is true, require close observation on our part, as well as some experience in judging of the value of such characters the same habit of observa tion and discrimination we apply to everyday affairs and to all departments of knowledge. But so few people give their attention to the discrimination of these plants that few know the value of their characters, or can even recognize them.
