Book Synopsis A Lichenometric Study of Holocene Rock Glaciers and Neoglacial Moraines, Frances Lake Map Area, Southeastern Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories by : Arthur S. Dyke
Download or read book A Lichenometric Study of Holocene Rock Glaciers and Neoglacial Moraines, Frances Lake Map Area, Southeastern Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories written by Arthur S. Dyke and published by Energy Mines and Resources Canada. This book was released on 1990 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Frances Lake map area of the northeastern Canadian Cordillera is crossed by northwest-southeast trending ranges of the Selwyn Mountains. Rock glaciers and neoglacial moraines were mapped during general surficial geological mapping in 1981 and selected features were studied in detail in 1983 from 6 fly camps in the northeastern part of the study area. Lichenometric ages are thought to pertain to time elapsed since stabilization of substrate, roughly corresponding to time elapsed since deposition of moraines and since initial flow of a rock glacier lobe or tread off from its parent apron. The ages of rock glaciers and moraines were assessed through lichenometry, the only dating technique that can be applied to nearly all substrates. This report discusses the lichenometric method used and presents the results from the 6 study areas as well as a regional summary and correlation.

Book Synopsis Surficial Geology of the Glenlyon Map Area, Yukon Territory by : Brent C. Ward
Download or read book Surficial Geology of the Glenlyon Map Area, Yukon Territory written by Brent C. Ward and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Glenlyon map area, located along the Pelly River in central Yukon, records at least three glaciations. This report presents results of surface mapping and geological studies in the area, beginning with an overview of the area's physiography, climate, bedrock, tectonics, and the regional Quaternary context. It continues with sections on the classification of landforms and surficial materials, mainly related to the glaciations; descriptions of pre-Quaternary, Early & Middle Pleistocene, Late Wisconsinan, and Holocene map units; stratigraphy of sediments laid down during the glaciations; and Quaternary geological history. The final section discusses practical applications of the research, including geotechnical conditions, availability of construction materials, and natural hazards.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area described in this report is located in the area of the Selwyn Valley, between the Selwyn and Mackenzie mountains on the Yukon-Northwest Territories border. The main section details the stratigraphy of the area and describes 27 mappable units, from the Upper Proterozoic to Carboniferous & recent volcanics, in four different facies zones, including ten new formations. This is followed by description of the area's three main structural domains, plus brief descriptions of intrusive rocks and regional metamorphism. The final section describes mineral occurrences and assesses the potential for economic deposits. The appendix contains paleontological identifications of specimens collected.
Book Synopsis Lower Paleozoic Stratigraphy of Northern Yukon Territory and Northwestern District of Mackenzie by : D. W. Morrow
Download or read book Lower Paleozoic Stratigraphy of Northern Yukon Territory and Northwestern District of Mackenzie written by D. W. Morrow and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous studies of the lower Palaeozoic in the Eagle Plain & Richardson Mountain area of north-west mainland Canada in the Yukon & Northwest Territories have dealt either with outcrop or surface sections, or with subsurface well sections, but did not integrate these data. This has led to the development of inconsistent stratigraphic nomenclatures and an inability to form a consistent sequence stratigraphic model for the lower Palaeozoic in this area. This bulletin presents a stratigraphic synthesis based on data from surface exposures in the mountains surrounding Eagle Plain and on subsurface borehole data from beneath Eagle Plain and from the interior plain bordering the east flank of the Richardson Mountains. An internally consistent stratigraphic framework is developed, including reaffirmation of some previous nomenclature, restriction to certain areas of others, and definition of new stratigraphic units. The positions of carbonate-to-shale transitions which commonly exert a strong control on structural evolution and on the occurrence of sedimentary mineral deposits & hydrocarbons are more accurately delineated. A detailed sedimentological analysis of the Ogilvie Formation, the most prospective lower Palaeozoic unit for the occurrence of hydrocarbon reservoirs, is also included, along with a map of thermal maturity at the top of the unit.
