Book Synopsis The Lost Worlds of Rhodes by : Nathan Shachar
Download or read book The Lost Worlds of Rhodes written by Nathan Shachar and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2013 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four peoples, each with its own culture, language, and faith, shared a small Mediterranean town named Rhodes, and experienced, each in its own way, the upheavals of war, modernity, emigration, and occupation. With the German takeover in 1943, the Holocaust in 1944, and the beginning of Greek rule in 1947, this multiethnic world perished forever. At the center of this book stands the Sephardi community: Spanish-speaking Jews who arrived in Rhodes sometime after the Spanish expulsion edict of 1492 and who remained the largest single group within the old city walls until Italy adopted German racial legislation in 1938. When Sultan Abdulhamit II ascended to the Ottoman throne in 1876, the Jews of Rhodes were among his most loyal and traditional, not to say hidebound, subjects. But, within the course of a few decades, this bastion of piety and rabbinical tradition was thoroughly transformed by French rationalism, Italian secularism, and the pressures of economic globalization. In this book, many unlikely characters come alive in the vibrant and irretrievably lost world of Rhodes: the French monks who impart universal values to provincial Turks, Greeks, and Jews * the Rhodian schoolboy lost in a Congolese jungle * the Italian general who brings sanitation to the medieval town * the Greek shepherd who knows the history of Rhodes better than any scholar * the Turkish diplomat whose wife was murdered by the Nazis and then risked his life to save Jews from the SS. These are just some of the stories related directly to the author, who combines journalism with scholarship in the recreation of a unique cultural microcosm.

Book Synopsis Missionaires Oblates by : Rosa Bruno-Jofré
Download or read book Missionaires Oblates written by Rosa Bruno-Jofré and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2008-11-17 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Curriculum Studies in Canada by : Anne M. Phelan
Download or read book Curriculum Studies in Canada written by Anne M. Phelan and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest specialization in faculties of education in Canada is curriculum studies. Curriculum Studies in Canada represents the present preoccupations of curriculum scholars in Canada. Set against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, contributors engage with significant themes, among them ongoing efforts at justice for Indigenous Peoples, the continuing arrival of immigrants and refugees, Canada’s complex relationship to the United States, and issues related to the climate crisis. Addressing such realities through the field of curriculum studies and the school curriculum is critical at this historical conjuncture given the complex and shifting intersections of local and global dynamics restricting education. To this end, contributing scholars serve as intellectual activists to address the critical need for understanding curriculum responsive to the vexed relations among schools, nation-building, social reconstruction, and identity development. Their activism yields more sophisticated understandings of what it means to be educated in Canada. Contributors trace the legacy of their work and reflect on their present scholarly preoccupations in light of their past endeavours. In doing so, Curriculum Studies in Canada offers an invitation to readers: to study, remember, dialogue, and navigate an uncertain world with them.
Book Synopsis Learning to Read, Learning Religion by : Britta Juska-Bacher
Download or read book Learning to Read, Learning Religion written by Britta Juska-Bacher and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-01-06 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catechism primers are inconspicuous but telling little books for children combining the teaching of reading skills and religious catechesis. From the 16th to the 19th centuries, they have been produced, disseminated and used in huge numbers in many regions of the world, in particular in Europe. Remarkably, similar texts appeared across the continent, spanning confessional traditions that were in other respects highly divergent. In different places, and across the whole period, different denominations used not only similar pedagogical and religious strategies, but also shared the same formats and iconography. This volume, edited by scholars from Finland, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, is the result of a collaborative transnational and interdisciplinary effort including education, language teaching, children’s literature, book history, and religious studies. With contributions on seventeen European countries and regions, it sheds new light on a fascinating but largely neglected part of European cultural heritage, and, by establishing a comprehensive and authoritative summary of the field, offers fresh impetus for further transnational research.
