Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lay of the Southern Cross: And Other Poems Should you be curious to know, dear Reader, why this Poem was written, it is no conceit, but the honest truth to say, that I was impelled to write it. I might almost say, I could not help it. I undertook in February, 1886. By desire of those whose request was an honour and a command, the task of writing the History of the Church of New Zealand, * and in my preparation for the work became simply enamoured of the wondrous tale of the evangeliza tion of the country, which may be described as a Religious Romance. The more I read, the more my admiration grew, until at length it broke out in song. I communicated my secret to very few; for I was afraid lest my enthusiasm should fail, or grow cold. But it was not so; on the contrary, the work became more and more a comfort to me, and a support under severe mental trials and bodily illness. It has never been a hindrance to my duties; for it became my chief refreshment. I very seldom sat down to elaborate any portion of it; for I composed almost the whole of it in the course of my walks, or when I was dressing, or on wet days, as I walked up and down for exercise and the results were committed to paper as opportunity offered. But why publish it, you may ask? Well, I humbly hope that this, and the other shorter poems, which help to make up this volume, and which have been written under similar circumstances, on various occasions in the course of nearly half a lifetime, may be accepted, through the dear Lord Jesus Christ, as a thank-offering to our Heavenly Father, and be made use of by Him, as He knows best, for the good of His Church. Book Synopsis Navigating by the Southern Cross by : Kenneth Morgan
Download or read book Navigating by the Southern Cross written by Kenneth Morgan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive study, Kenneth Morgan provides an authoritative account of European exploration and discovery in Australia. The book presents a detailed chronological overview of European interests in the Australian continent, from initial speculations about the 'Great Southern Land' to the major hydrographic expeditions of the 19th century. In particular, he analyses the early crossings of the Dutch in the 17th century, the exploits of English 'buccaneer adventurer' William Dampier, the famous voyages of James Cook and Matthew Flinders, and the little-known French annexation of Australia in 1772. Introducing new findings and drawing on the latest in historiographical research, this book situates developments in navigation, nautical astronomy and cartography within the broader contexts of imperial, colonial, and maritime history.

Book excerpt: Lieutenant General Leonidas Polk was a distinguished West Point graduate, the first Episcopal Bishop of Louisiana, a university founder, and a Confederate commander beloved by his troops, esteemed by the public, and killed on the field of battle. In spite of his many accomplishments, historians invariably disparage Polk's generalship and even his personal character--but is their treatment fair or accurate? This work employs a balanced perspective to shed new light on Polk's military leadership and reveal unexpected truths that explain his conflict with General Braxton Bragg. A seemingly insignificant piece of correspondence, along with an exploration of both men's writings, coalesce into an understanding of the root cause of the command dysfunction and chronic failures of the Army of Tennessee.

Book Synopsis Flying the Southern Cross by : Michael Molkentin
Download or read book Flying the Southern Cross written by Michael Molkentin and published by National Library Australia. This book was released on 2012 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1928, Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm made the first trans-Pacific flight in the Southern Cross - an aircraft constructed largely of wood and fabric. They made the trip from Oakland, California, in nine days, during which they faced electrical storms, torrential rain, equipment failure, and fuel shortages. Navigational aids were primitive - contact with the outside world was by Morse code only - and safety measures were non-existent. After many close calls, they triumphantly landed in Brisbane, where a crowd of 15,000 welcomed them as heroes. Throughout this extraordinary journey, Ulm kept a logbook in which he recorded his raw impressions of the flight. Using Ulm's logbook, plus contemporary newspaper accounts and official documents, Flying the Southern Cross tells the gripping tale of this history-making flight, and the aviators who made it happen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the Southern Cross, the eighth book in the Brothers Series and the fourth in the Shamrocks Saga, continues the story begun in Shamrocks in the Heather with the adventures of the rapidly maturing younger members of the Quigley clan. World War II is now in full swing and the Quigley cousins (by whatever name they're known) volunteer for duty in the armed forces: Andrew, Finn and Doug in the RAF, Dennis in the Royal Navy and Geordie in the Army. Roarke, trapped in Australia by the outbreak of war, joins the coastwatchers in the Solomon Islands. This job, vital to the war effort and extremely dangerous, keep Martin, Anne and the twins on tenterhooks. Whether due to old age or the toll taken by the stress of war, the family suffers many deaths. The younger generation suffers greatly as well as they perform their various stints in the military. In the meantime, the demon inhabiting the soul of Adolph Hitler is beginning to believe the Nazis are no longer going to win the war. He takes desperate and sometimes foolish measures to try to rectify the deteriorating situation. Lucifer, ever practical, decides to hedge his bet by looking at Stalin as a new would-be ally in his war to establish the Rule of Chaos. The Spear of Destiny will play a role in the outcome of the war and many forces are determined to gain control of the mystical weapon. What no one counts on is the interference of the Quigley twins. Dora and Dosia are set on reclaiming the Spear for its original owner. While a vicious war turns London into matchsticks and mainland Europe into hell-on-earth, a semi-normal life goes on. People, Quigleys included, marry and have children. Their traveling is curtailed by shortages of fuel; their gatherings are more subdued with less food and fewer gifts but a semblance of normalcy is stubbornly adhered to. So, the battle between good and evil goes on. On one side is the Prince of Hell and his faithful (?) Lieutenant Beelzebub. Or is he faithful? He's beginning to develop a reluctant admiration for the twins and even begins to like them. On the other side are the Quigleys, their Angels and the two wild-cards: Dora and Dosia. What happens to the Spear will have great bearing on the future of mankind although no one really realizes that and the twins want to keep it that way. They know this is not the last time they'll have to face and fight Lucifer and his minions but they take one day at a time, one challenge at a time while whispering the "Quigley lullaby" "Whisht now, whisht." This is not a religious book nor meant to endorse or promote any type of belief. It is intended to provide a verbal roller-coaster ride. Plus, I've grown to quite like The Old Man. Enjoy!
