Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Last Diary, 1921 Supplied the inspiration of Enjoying Life, the volume of essays that revealed him more distinctively in the character of a naturalist and a man of letters. Still, the diary was primarily written for himself. It was his means of self-expression, the secret chamber of his soul into which no other person, how ever deep in his love and confidence, might penetrate. More than once I asked him to let me look at those parts which he thought suitable for publication, but shyly he turned aside the suggestion with the remark: Some day, perhaps, but not now. All I ever saw was a part of the first essay in Eiybying Life, and an account of his wanderings in a spirit of burning exultation over the great stretch of sandy burrows at the estuary of that beautiful Devonshire river, the Taw, where in long days of solitude he first taught himself with the zeal and patience of the born naturalist the ways of birds and fish and insects, and learnt to love the sweet harmony of the sunlight and the flowers; where, too, as a mere boy he first meditated upon the mysteries of life and death. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Classical Journal, 1921-1922, Vol. 17 Writers are generally agreed on the subject of the personnel of the American jury. Due to a number of reasons, the average jury, they feel, is composed of individuals of mediocre ability and mentality, who regard it as no great inconvenience to devote their time to such service.' Statistics seem to show that busy pro fessional men and successful business men prefer to pay the fines imposed for refusal to serve rather than devote their time to jury duty.' It is entirely probable that men engaged in professions which carry with them exemption from jury service, such as teach ing, for example, avail themselves of this exemption not entirely because they are so devoted to their business, but because they as conservative and law-abiding citizens are entirely satisfied with a vicarious acquaintance with the courts. The consequence is that jury service has grown to be practically a profession with a type of otherwise unemployed or at least indifi'erently employed individ uals.' When he finds he shall wonder; When he wonders, he shall reign; And when he reigns, he shall rest. How fitting, then, was the primary word of exhortation which, early in the meeting, went forth from the Friend through whose concern it had been appointed: And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. Book excerpt: In this capacity, he had to deal with local governments, now in the control of the Communist Party, and his narration of his experiences gives probably one of the first insights into the workings of the Party in local government. Yet the journal also gives an account of the lives of those enemies of the Soviets that did not get out, the bourgeois and aristocratic elements, who were hostile to the new system. Frequently, these citizens, who were educated and had often learned English, came to work for the ARA, and Childs witnessed their sad lives and the suspicion they experienced from the Soviet government."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Museum Journal, 1921, Vol. 12 It will soon be one hundred and fifty years since Captain James Cook was killed in Hawaii, in the group Of islands in the Pacific that he discovered on his last voyage. His death took place in 1779 and the Tapa Book bears the date 1787. Although the author makes no reference to himself at all, it is clear enough that he was a man of firm character, large intelligence, pronounced Opinions, catholic tastes and deep sympathies. It is also a fact that although he is sometimes ungrammatical his use of the English language is picturesque, forceful and full of charm. To those who knew him he must have been an attractive personality with a versatile and entertaining mind, but there is no clue to his identity. The next question that presents itself has reference to the identity of the hero of the Dedication. He must have been a great man and a public figure. Mr. Hall suggests with entire plausibility that the hero was Warren Hastings whose impeachment was pending at the time the Dedication was written. Indeed Mr. Hall succeeds in showing that the man referred to could be no other than Warren Hastings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The richer and fuller their life of today the more complete and worth-while their future will be. To aid in making this possible is the privilege and duty of all concerned in their education - teachers and officers, former pupils, members of our Board of Directors, Members of the Legislature, and the people of California in general. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In German Hands: The Diary of a Severely Wounded Prisoner On August 24, 1915, I received a letter in the country, where I was then staying, from a depot for convalescent soldiers in the South. I will make it the exordium of this preface, for it will tell better than I could myself the circumstances in which I made the author's acquaintance. It ran as follows: "Mon cher Maitre, - Do you still remember the young aspirant to a literary career for whom you got a post as reader in the Plon printing press at Meaux? Up to the present year, I have always sought to express my lasting gratitude by the modest card I have sent you every first of January. This year I was unable to send it, and I must make my excuses. "I enlisted as a volunteer for the duration of the war, and was severely wounded on October 12, 1914, before Saint-Mihiel. The Germans picked me up on the 16th, amputated my leg, and took me to Metz.
